The optical power incident on the second collimator, as well as the power output by the second fiber, are measured. When the second fiber is multimode with a 50 µm diameter core, alignment resulted in 91% of the power incident on the second collimator being measured at the fiber output. This value was 86% when the second fiber was single mode. The transmission is via a laser from the transmitting device. Notice that the cladding for all fibre cables remains the same and only the internal core size changes\nThe 5 categories of multi-mode fibre are\n• OM1\n• OM2\n• OM3\n• OM4\n• OM5\nEach category is an improvement on its predecessor. Therefore this results in a greater ability to transmit greater bandwidth. Today we’ll be looking at the difference between Singlemode and Multimode Fiber Optics.\n \nSinglemode cables have a small diameter nine micron core, allowing only one pathway of light. \n\nMultimode cables have two different large diameter core sizes, 50 and 62.5 micron, allowing multiple pathways of light. 50 micron cables provide longer link distance and higher speeds than 62.5 micron cables. \n\nSinglemode cables have theoretically unlimited bandwidth, whereas Multimode cables have a limited bandwidth, with 50 micron cables providing three times the bandwidth of 62.5 micron cables.\n\nSinglemode cables are more suitable for long distance applications, while Multimode cables are better suited for short distance applications.\n\nSinglemode and Multimode cables are available in both Duplex and Simplex options. \n\nDuplex Fiber Optic Cables consist of two fibers, usually in a side by side style. They are used in applications that require simultaneous, bi-directional data transfer, such as fiber switches, servers, and modems.\n\nSimplex Fiber Optic Cables consist of a single fiber. Fiber types are identified by the diameters of the core and cladding, expressed in microns. Multimode fiber is available in two sizes, 62.5 or 50 microns, and four classifications: OM1 (62.5/125 µm), OM2, OM3, OM4 (50/125 µm). The diameter of a single mode core is 9µm. Both fiber types have a cladding diameter of 125 µm or microns.

You will learn light ray theory and waveguide theory of fiber mode.\r\n\r\nBefore going further, you should know the typical structure of a single mode fiber.\r\n\r\nThe left illustration shows that single mode fiber has a core with a diameter of 8 micron, a cladding with a diameter of 125um, and a buffer with a diameter of 250um.\r\n\r\nThe core and cladding are made of fused silica, a type of glass, and the buffer is typically acrylic.\r\n\r\nThe right illustration shows how a glass fiber guides light. Lights enter into the core and is guided along the fiber.\r\n\r\nWhat is a single mode fiber exactly? This picture shows a simplified light ray explanation.\r\n\r\nThe top two fibers are multi-mode fibers. Multimode fibers can have a core diameter ranging from 50 microns to 200 microns or even more.\r\n\r\nThe typically light ray explanation is that the core size is large enough, so that multiple light rays can enter into the core at different angles and are guided along the fiber. Here, different light rays at different angles are called different fiber modes. Since multimode fibers can guide many modes, that is why there are called MULTI Mode fiber.\r\n\r\nOn the other hand, the bottom fiber is a single mode fiber. The typically light ray explanation is that the core is so tiny, that only one light ray which is perpendicular at the core interface can enter into the core and is guided. Since there is only one mode, that is why it is called SINGLE Mode fiber.\r\n\r\nBut actually, the theory is not so simple. When it comes to single mode fiber, light ray theory is not enough to explain it. So here you see fiber mode calculation based on waveguide theory.\r\n\r\nI will not go into the detail of the calculation process. Here is the result of the calculation.\r\n\r\nV number is a key parameter that describes the mode structure of an optical fiber. The left graph shows the V number. V number determines the number of electromagnetic modes in the fiber.\r\n\r\nFrom this graph, we can see that when V number is smaller than 2.405, as shown by the red dashed line, there is only one mode, called LP01 mode, can be guided by the fiber. This is called a single mode fiber. \r\n\r\nWhen V number is larger than 2.405, several modes can be guided by the fiber. The higher the V number, the larger the number of modes. This is called multimode fiber.\r\n\r\nV number is calculated based on the fiber’s structure and the light wavelength. As shown at the bottom formula. In this formula, a is the radius of fiber core, Lamda is the light’s wavelength, n1 is the refractive index of the fiber core, and n2 is the refractive index of the fiber cladding. Buffer layer is there for mechanical protection of the fiber and is not involved in the calculation.\r\n\r\nThe previous slide shows only the calculation result. Network cables are used to connect devices and transfer data or information between those devices on an ethernet network.\nThese cables are essentially the carrier or media through which data flows.\nThere are two types of cables we can use for Ethernet networks:\n* UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair)/Copper cable\n* Fiber cables\n\nUTP Cable\nUTP cables use copper to transmit an electrical signal. \nTo create the electrical circuit, we use two wires inside the UTP cable to create a loop, which allows electricity to flow:\nTo send data between two devices, it uses encoding scheme. \nwhen we want to send a 1 we send a high voltage.\nWhen we want to send a 0, we send a low voltage. \nWhen both devices use the same encoding scheme, we can exchange data.\nOne issue with electricity when sending it through a wire is that we get EMI (electromagnetic interference). \nTwisting the cables helps to cancel most of the EMI between the wire pairs.\n\nBreaking Down a UTP Ethernet Link \nThe term Ethernet link refers to any physical cable between two Ethernet nodes. \nThe cable holds some copper wires, grouped as twisted pairs. \nMany Ethernet UTP cables use an RJ-45 connector on both ends. \nTo complete the physical link, each node need an RJ-45 Ethernet port that matches the RJ-45 connectors on the cable so that the connectors on the ends of the cable can connect to each node. \nThe cable with connectors is then connected to a NIC (Network Card) or a switch port:\nPCs often include this RJ-45 Ethernet port as part of a network interface card (NIC), \nSwitches typically have many RJ-45 ports because switches give user devices a place to connect to the Ethernet LAN. \nUTP cables can be wired as \nstraight through or \ncrossover.\nstraight through cables are primarily used for connecting unlike devices. \nsuch as\n* Switch to router\n* Switch to PC or server\n* Hub to PC or server\n\nAnd crossover cables are use for connecting a like devices.\nsuch as\n* Switch to switch\n* Switch to hub\n* Hub to hub\n* Router to router\n* Router Ethernet port to PC NIC\n* PC to PC\n\nthree most commonly used Ethernet standards for copper are : \n10BASE-T (Ethernet), \n100BASE-T (Fast Ethernet, or FE), and \n1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet, or GE). \n\nYou can identify in IEEE standard name if is the copper when it includes the letter T\nThe advantage of UTP is that it’s cheap and easy to work with. \nThe capability of many UTP-based Ethernet standards to use a cable length up to 100 meters means that the majority of Ethernet cabling in an enterprise uses UTP cables. \nOne of the disadvantages is that you can only use it up to 100 meter.\nThis is where the our next topic comes in to the picture\n\nFiber cables\nFiber optic cable is a high-speed data transmission medium.\nIt contains tiny glass or plastic filaments as the medium through which light passes\nvarying that light over time to encode 0s and 1s. \nDigital data is transmitted through the cable via rapid pulses of light. \nThe receiving end of a fiber optic transmission translates the light pulses into binary values, which can be read by a network device \nComponents of a Fiber-Optic Cable \nFiber is actually composed of two layers of glass. • \nThe “core”, which carries the actual light signal.• The “cladding”, a layer of glass surrounding the corecladding and core work together to create the environment to allow transmission of light over the cable.\nThe three outer layers of the cable protect the interior of the cable and make the cables easier to install and manage.\nWhen using fiber cable To transmit between two devices, you need two cables, for tx and rx one for each direction, as shown in Figure 2-18. \n\nFiber Types \nThere are two main types of fiber optic cables: • \n Single Mode Fiber (SMF)• Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF) \n• The difference is basically in the size of the core. \nSMF has a very narrow core (typically around 9μm), which allows only a single mode of light to propagate. \nSingle-mode allows distances into the tens of kilometers, but with slightly more expensive SFP/SFP+ hardware.\nSMF fiber you can see on the right side in yellow \nMMF has a much wider core (typically 62.5μm or 50μm), allowing multiple modes (or “rays”) of light to propagate. \nFiber allow for distances up to 400m \n\nSome of the commonly used ethernet standard for fiber are\n1000BASE-LX sm\n10GBASE-S mm\n10GBASE-LX4 mm\n10GBASE-LR sm\n10GBASE-E /ZR sm\n\n#CCNA #fiber #UTP #copper #singlemode
