Black Rifle Coffee Company

US coffee company (founded 2014)

The Black Rifle Coffee Company (BRCC) is a coffee company based in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, owned by veterans of the United States Armed Forces.[2] It garnered national attention in 2017 when it employed about 50 people after promising to hire 10,000 veterans in response to Starbucks’ pledge to hire 10,000 refugees.[3][4][5]

history [edit]

The company was founded in December 2014 by former Green Beret Evan Hafer.[6] He began selling a small batch of his Freedom Roast coffee through a friend’s clothing website. The coffee was selling well, so Oats started his own brand and website to sell his coffee and branded accessories. The company specializes in its online coffee subscription service for consumers, which had over 100,000 subscribers as of 2020.[7] In addition to online sales, Black Rifle Coffee Company has physical coffee shops in Utah, Texas and Georgia.[8] The coffee will also be distributed at some shooting ranges,[9] 5.11 Tactical Stores[6] and Bass Pro Shops[10].

BRCC has produced a series of sometimes controversial social media videos that combine military humor with hipster jokes and guns.[11]

In 2017, BRCC expanded into Canada with a division based in Alberta and led by CEO Darren Weeks.[12]

In 2018, BRCC opened a new coffee roasting facility in Manchester, Tennessee, as part of a $6 million investment in the state.[13] It also launched Coffee or Die Magazine,[14] an online news and lifestyle publication covering military, veteran, law enforcement and coffee-related topics.[15]

In 2018, the company’s gross sales totaled $30 million.[16] In 2019, the BRCC employed more than 200 people, 40 percent of whom were US military veterans. At the time of writing, their products were available at 1,700 retail locations across the country. On September 29, 2019, BRCC opened its first standalone licensed coffee shop in Boerne, Texas.[17] According to the Washington Examiner, as of 2021 they employed about 550 people, half of whom were veterans, spouses, or reservists.[18]

The company expanded in 2020 with the launch of ready-to-drink canned iced coffee.[19] In March 2020, BRCC launched a coffee donation campaign in support of medical and emergency workers, quarantined military personnel and their families, and others working to mitigate the national and global impact of COVID-19.[20] In May, a Canadian gun ban enacted in the wake of the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks was mistakenly believed to include a ban on the coffee company, but further investigation found that the ban actually referred to a similarly named “Black Rifle Company.” based in Arizona was applied. 21] In July, the BRCC provided a $15,000 grant to the Hunter Seven Foundation to support a new round of medical research examining the effects of exposure to toxins in Afghanistan.[22]

In a July 2021 article in The New York Times, Hafer describes his vision for the growth of physical franchised stores with retired military NCOs. He sees Navy NCOs and Army Sergeants joining the company and running their own franchises rather than joining the local police force in their hometowns.[1]

SPAC[edit]

In November 2021, Black Rifle Coffee Company merged with SilverBox Engaged Merger Corporation via a special purpose vehicle to raise funds for expansion and IPO. The company is valued at approximately $1.7 billion.[23] The merger was completed in February 2022.[24]

politics [edit]

The Black Rifle Coffee Company’s corporate image is based on its conservative policies and support for veterans. More than half of the staff are former military personnel.[16]

The company maintains a pro-military, pro-gun, and pro-police image[25][26] and has publicly supported the policies of former US President Donald Trump through actions such as publishing a (now-deleted) blog post who supported Trump’s then-current proposal to ban immigration from Muslim-majority countries.[27][28] The company’s political stance has caught the attention of Fox News[29] and has been criticized by conservative television personality Sean Hannity[30] and Donald Trump Jr.[5] supports.

A 2021 Salon article reported that BRCC is trying to draw a line and distance itself from the far right after their logos and equipment surfaced on Kyle Rittenhouse, a teenager who was acquitted after shooting two people to Killed self-defense and injured another during a Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin.[31] Black Rifle Coffee symbols were also seen on rioters entering the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.[32]

marketing [edit]

The company’s brand is closely associated with its gun-friendly and socially conservative image, as well as close ties to the American military and law enforcement.

In 2017, BRCC launched an advertising campaign based on their plan to hire 10,000 veterans. Although conceived beforehand[11], BRCC launched the campaign after well-known coffee supplier Starbucks Corporation launched an advertising campaign focused on their plan to hire 10,000 refugees.[33] BRCC posted a meme on social media that juxtaposed an image of ISIS fighters photoshopped with Starbucks mugs with an image of American soldiers in combat that read, “Starbucks vows to hire 10,000 refugees” and “Black Rifle Coffee Company vowed to hire 10,000 veterans.”[11] Company contributions related to advertising campaign dubbed Starbucks “Hipsterbucks.”[6] While Hafer criticized what he saw as a Starbucks publicity stunt, BRCC also received similar criticism of their advertising campaign, particularly for the size discrepancy between BRCC and Starbucks and BRCC’s ad campaign reference to Starbucks not hiring veterans. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz and former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates had started a similar program in 2013 to hire 10,000 veterans over the next five years, and by 2017 they had hired 8,000 of them. In February 2017, BRCC employed a total of 52 people. Hafer responded that BRCC and Starbucks were very different companies and that their size difference meant BRCC’s proposal was a much more ambitious plan.[11] In a 2017 interview with Vice News, founder Hafer praised Starbucks’ veteran hiring program and made it clear that he supports any hiring effort as long as the message is positive.[6]

For a July 2019 campaign, BRCC donated a bag of coffee to a police officer for every bag purchased in response to a story that six Tempe, Arizona police officers were ordered to exit a Starbucks location.[34]

BRCC rejected a possible logo for one of their coffee bags featuring a Renaissance-style depiction of Saint Michael the Archangel, a patron saint of military personnel, firing a short-barreled rifle. The design was rejected when Hafer was informed by a Pentagon friend that the image of Saint Michael standing on Satan’s neck was being used by white supremacists because of the resemblance to the murder of George Floyd.[1]

Evan Hafer

Between deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, I worked to hone both my coffee roasting and firearms skills. I’ve spent over a decade researching coffee, refining my roast profiles, and (of course) drinking what I roast. Black Rifle Coffee Company is literally the combination of my two favorite passions. I’m proud of the coffee we roast, the veterans we employ and the causes we support.
