My version of these rolls includes avocado, cucumber, raw salmon, nori, and rice, along with a bit of rice vinegar to make the rice sticky and easy to roll. Trust me, with just these 6 ingredients, you can’t go wrong. The smooth, creamy texture of the avocado, salmon, and cream cheese pairs perfectly with the crunchy cucumber and chewy rice. The best way to enjoy these rolls is by adding a little wasabi paste on each piece and dipping them in soy sauce. These sushi rolls are naturally gluten-free, though sometimes a small amount of wheat is added to soy sauce, so make sure to use gluten-free soy sauce if you have an intolerance.

Ingredients:

  • Sushi Rice: 90 grams (1/2 cup)

  • Rice Vinegar: 2 tablespoons

  • Sugar: 1 tablespoon

  • Salt: 1 teaspoon

  • Nori Sheets: 1 sheet, dried and roasted

  • Cucumber: 1/2 medium-sized

  • Avocado: 1/2 ripe

  • Cream Cheese (Philadelphia): 3 tablespoons

  • Raw Salmon: 350 grams (12 oz)

  • Soy Sauce: for dipping

  • Wasabi Paste: for dipping

Additional Tools:

  • Plastic food wrap

  • Bamboo mat

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Sushi Rice:

    • Rinse the rice thoroughly and cook it with 3/4 cup of water. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 15 minutes until the water is absorbed.

    • Let it sit for 10 minutes. Once cooled, add 1 tablespoon rice vinegar, sugar, and salt to the rice, mixing well.

  2. Prepare the Nori:

    • Use scissors to cut the nori sheet into two equal halves.

  3. Prepare the Fillings:

    • Slice the cucumber and avocado into long strips.

    • Slice the salmon into thin pieces.

  4. Roll the Sushi:

    • Lay a piece of plastic wrap on the bamboo mat to avoid mess.

    • Place a nori sheet with the rough side up on the bamboo mat.

    • Spread the rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top and bottom.

    • Turn the nori over so the rice faces the plastic wrap.

  5. Shape the Roll:

    • Fold the bottom of the nori over the rice and press evenly.

    • Roll up tightly from the bottom, forming a log shape.

    • Lay the thinly sliced salmon on plastic wrap and place the sushi roll in the center.

    • Wrap the salmon around the roll, ensuring it’s fully covered.

  7. Cut the Sushi Rolls:

    • Use a serrated knife to cut the roll into 8 equal pieces.
