Now in college, Alec Cabacungan says giving back to Shriners hospitals means giving hope to kids like him

Alec Cabacungan wants to be a sports broadcaster. It was his dream for as long as the 19-year-old Oak Park resident remembers.

Talking to him, you can feel his fighting spirit that will do it, the spirit that has sent him through lifelong surgeries and physical therapy.

You can see the determination in his infectious smile and the big brown eyes that made thousands of TV viewers love him.

Cabacungan is SI Alec, the ambassador/patient spokesperson for Shriners Children’s Chicago (formerly Shriners Children’s Hospital) who, through a series of advertisements over the past seven years, has asked people to give generously to hospital systems across the country and receive one of the “friendly” red teddy bear blankets as a thank you.

He was a young man on a mission.

Born with brittle bone disease – osteogenesis imperfecta, or OI, a genetic bone disorder blamed on the lack of or abnormal collagen in the bones, causing its frequent and easy fractures – Cabacungan became part of the Shriners family from when he was 2 months old.

He has undergone countless surgeries, which have broken more than 60 bones in his lifetime. His most recent procedure was in December, after his wheelchair spun as he spun on a snowy sidewalk, leaving him with fractures to his left shoulder, right knee and left hip.

It was a setback not only physically but academically as well. He had to take leave of absence at Northwestern University, where he majored in sports broadcasting, to undergo intense post-surgery physical therapy at Oak Park Avenue hospital center.

“Alex has a fairly severe form of the disease,” Drs. Peter Smith, Cabacungan’s longtime physician and surgeon at Shriners. “He was born with a fracture and bending of the long bones of his arms and legs. So he needed a lot of splinting and casting when he was young and then operated on most of the long bones of his body to put in intramedullary rods to strengthen the bones. It makes the bone straighter, firmer so it doesn’t break too much. ”

Life -changing canes were invented in Shriners more than 70 years ago, Smith said. “It has changed the care of sick children because it has become possible for them to move better and have fewer fractures. They are now out of the house and going to school and doing everything that is not. they could have done it before. ”

For Cabacungan, this means living a fuller life, including playing wheelchair basketball — the Shriners named its onsite basketball court in his honor — and attending “regular school like his sisters and his friends. ”

He graduated from Abraham Lincoln Elementary School and Oak Park River Forest High School, and “everyone was very good at school. There was no bullying. I had a great support group, from students to teachers to parents, who always looks at me.I mean, it’s hard sometimes, being the only kid in school in a wheelchair, but they didn’t make me feel bad.

“I’m always hanging out with the kids at sports, and they always make me feel bad,” he said. “In sixth grade, I found wheelchair sports and I really got involved in the Chicago Park District’s adaptive sports program. From sixth grade, I played wheelchair basketball and wheelchair softball, and that’s where I really felt like I was part of a team.

These days, he attends college in Northwestern, where he lives in a dorm and drives a specially modified van. But Cabacungan said he also wants to continue to “give back to the Shriners,” to give hope to children like him and their families.

Pat Nabong / Sun-Times“When I was in sixth or seventh grade, someone from the administration asked my family and us to participate in a commercial fundraising effort for the hospital,” Cabacungan said. “The Shriners helped me in every aspect of my life, so my family and I decided that, if it would help the hospital and the kids, we would do it.”

“In any kind of rare disease, the dissemination of information serves several functions,” Smith said. “It allows parents and others to rally together to raise money and awareness for research, treatment and support groups for families, for example. Alec has greatly raised awareness for those Shriners. It takes someone like Alec with that kind of well-rounded, energetic personality. ” his “King Kaleb”), Cabacungan and his parents Alma and GillCabacungan travel the country on behalf of the Shriners. He has attended NBA, NFL and college games around the country, learned about OI and the Shriners — and honed his sportscasting/color commentary skills. He hosted his own show on YouTube, which interviewed athletes in various sports.

“I’ve always been a sports nut,” Cabacungan said. “When I was a kid, I watched guys like Derrick Rose and Devin Hester in Chicago just do these weird [incredible] things in games. And, for me, they were superheroes. “I always knew I wouldn’t be seven feet tall and jump in the gym. But my dad and I, we played a lot at home, and he always wanted me to be at my best. Sports are always a way for us to bond.”

He even met some of his idols, including Tiger Woods, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Zion Williamson and Brett Favre. “I’ve met some amazing people,” he said. “The little kid in me is always excited.”

Cabacungan hopes to someday work for a major network, “call the NBA game, cover the Super Bowl.” But he prefers to cover the Paralympics.

“I want to see more people with disabilities cover the Paralympics because I’m not the only person with a physical disability who wants to do sports journalism. I want to do that in 2024, cover the summer Paralympics in Paris. I want to push the boundaries for people with disabilities in the world of sports media.

Shriners Children’s Chicago provides all medical care, diagnosis, treatment and therapy for patients up to 18 years of age regardless of ability to pay. Pat Nabong / Sun-Times

“I didn’t feel that people could stop me, even though in my mind I couldn’t forget my disability,” Cabacungan said. “There are a lot of hurdles that people with disabilities just have to face in their lives in general. I was on top of the world in November. And then the accident happened, and it changed the trajectory of the next four months. There were opportunities I’m really disgusted with myself.I feel like I’m competing more with myself than others.

“I just hope people realize that people with disabilities are no different from others,” he said. “We have feelings, we have a heart, and we shouldn’t be treated differently because we look different. I hope it’s okay to say that. That’s how I went about my life. You should expect us to do good things too. ”

And, yes, laughing he says, “really good quality” Shriners with blankets.
