Almost a year ago, Staff Sgt. Travis M. Adams happened to be in the right place at the right time to respond to a multi -vehicle accident and help save lives in the local community.
For his heroism, the Fort Rucker flight medic was awarded the Soldier’s Medal by Maj. Gen. David J. Francis, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence commanding general, at a ceremony in the U.S. Army Aviation Museum on Aug. 27.
To get the Soldier’s Medal, an individual must be personally in danger and risk their life to save another, Francis explains.
“This is a rare event. In 32 years of service, I have never been awarded a Soldier Medal, and I only have one present. It is a very unique award, and highly deserved by Staff Sgt. Adams,” said Francis.
In Oct. 9, 2020, Adams had just released a 24 -hour shift as a flight medic with FLATIRON (Fort Rucker’s air ambulance detachment), and was spending some time that day with his wife and son at a park in the Ozark , Alabama.
Shortly after they left the park, they happened to be at the scene of a multi -vehicle accident. It was in a dangerous area near a curve on a road, where debris was hidden from oncoming traffic. Adams parked their family’s vehicle, and immediately ran down the hill to assess the situation and provide triage.
The driver of a pickup truck, whose airbags were deployed, was bewildered but not hurt and was talking on his phone, which Adams thought was a 911 call. But it soon became clear that no anyone, even the spectators called for help, so Adams’s wife called.
Adams approached in a broken down sedan. A part of the car was removed, and a female passenger was still trapped inside, screaming, with the roof folded over her that pinned her to the car.

Adams immediately turned around in the car, looking for the driver, who had been violently driven out of the vehicle and lying down, engulfed in chunks of broken glass on the street.
His first thought was that the driver had not survived the collision, but as he approached him, he began to regain consciousness, and began to scream in pain, unable to move.
A broken fuel line coming from the vehicle sprayed fuel directly on the woman on the ground. The car began to flash and smoke, making hissing sounds, and fuel accumulated around him.
“The scene was very clearly unsafe for him,” Adams said.
Adams twisted the fuel line away from him. He got her permission to move him from fuel and to safety. He also became full of fuel, but continued rescue efforts despite the blazing engine block.
He got back in the car, crawled to the driver’s side, lifted the roof with his back, and forced the passenger to get out of the car. He was bleeding from the head and had some bruises on the legs, but otherwise seemed OK.
He seated the passenger on the curb, and returned to further assist the driver, who was in worse condition.
“I checked his pulse motor sensory, which is his ability to move and feel his feet, checked to see if he had any spinal dislocation, which would be like misalignment,” Adams said, as he recalls the checklist from his Army Training.
Adams continued to keep calm and comfort the victims as they waited for the ambulance to arrive.Once the first responders arrived at the scene, Adams sent the information to emergency medical service personnel, and both women were taken in for care.
As he recalls the events of that day, Adams said he was just doing what he expected other people to do for his own family in a similar situation, and he was glad it worked out the way it did.
“It’s easy to go the other way,” he said. “When you put yourself in a situation where someone has been hit on a blind curve – someone who crashed as easily as my husband’s car, and as easily as I crashed into the street. You’re doing what you think is right , and hope nothing else happens. ”Zyisha Carson, 18, who was the driver of the car that day, attended the ceremony, along with her mother, Carmella Carson. This is the first time they have been formally introduced to Adams.
“They told me someone helped me, but I didn’t know who it was,” Zyisha said. “It’s amazing because I know someone is there to help me.”
Fortunately, Zyisha has made an incredible recovery. In the wake of the accident, she was in the hospital for 11 days, with five bone fractures and her pelvis broken on one side, Carmella said.
