Teens and teens are getting bad rap.
They are often called lazy and entitled, with a new generation visibly inseparably glued to their phones and TikTok. And when they talk about issues, it can be met with an eye roll or a knowing sigh.
This suggests, “Maybe they’ll get how the world works when they’re older.”
But veteran pollster John Della Volpe said everything he was told – and most think – about Generation Z was wrong. Della Volpe is the polling director at Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics and former adviser to the Biden campaign, and she explores the evolution of Gen Z in her new book.
Fight: How Gen Z shares their fear and passion to save America, covering the coming age of 70 million young people in America born over a 20 -year period since the mid -1990s. Della Volpe examines the political that awakening of this generation that came more during the Trump era, as well as what he describes as a “significant mental health crisis,” exacerbated by the country’s political state.
Forward to Fight was written by one of Gen Z’s most visible activists, David Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.
Hogg told NPR that older people often thank him for his generation to “stand up,” eager to pass the baton. But Hogg said long -term change requires more than the determination of young people – it requires a coalition across generations.
Their conversation is below, edited for length and clarity.
Juana Summers: I just want to start here with the basics. You have been leading the poll focused on youth in the United States for more than two decades. What inspired you to write this book?
John Della Volpe: Honestly, I think everything I’ve been told and everything a lot of people think about Gen Z is frankly, wrong. And I want to write this book to correct those myths. I think every generation has its share of anxiety and excitement. I’m Gen X, but I don’t think there has been a generation in 75 years that has faced more turmoil, faster in their young lives than Gen Z or Zoomers. If we think about it, many of them were born around 9/11, and it has always been a shadow in their lives. Millions of parents lost their homes because of the Great Recession. Entering school, they faced lockdown drills, things my generation had never seen before. And the idea of going somewhere and being safe doesn’t really exist for young people. There was so much excitement, even before COVID-19 and the social isolation of the lockdown, it was all accelerated by social media. It all happens before they turn 25. So there they came of age. But instead of melting, it made them harder and harder and made them more focused on doing good things for themselves and for the country.
JS: David, going forward the book you offer a rallying cry to other members of your generation What is your message to them?
David Hogg: While voting is important and clearly very important that we do, it’s not the only thing we’re going to do because our generation won’t wait for progress. As we have seen from all these movements, especially over the past four years, that young people have performed a critical movement and from the March for Our Lives, to the call for racial justice, to all of others. We need to vote, but we also need to remember that change needs to be created inside and outside of politics, because real political power is not just generated by vote. It creates an issue and cultural change in young people and how we see the world we live in and the world we want to leave.

I wanted to ask you about a moment from a focus group that you say really stayed with you. You asked what the older generation didn’t understand about Generation Z, and you quoted a participant named Grace:
“An older generation can’t understand waking up in a classroom and wondering how easy it is for someone to pick it up. The same daily burden on an adult’s shoulders in bills or taxes is how children feel about life or death. ”
John, what determines you about that?
JDV: I’ve been asking that for 20 years. And what I often hear when I ask that question is optimism, and chance, even in some of the poorest communities across the country, some of the most difficult situations. I used to hear young people talk about the kind of connection and opportunity that is there in America, if you do it. And now what I hear is that [they] don’t have the luxury to think about that. Young people are challenged by the daily weight of living and dying. It’s not just Grace – every hand in that group rises and nods its head. We talked about this at the beginning. There is simply no place that is safe.
JS: David, I want to ask you the same question John asked Grace. What do the older generations not understand about your generation?
DH: John made a good point on the aspect of fear and anxiety that Gen Z faces. And I think the anxiety that comes from gun violence, from climate change to all these other things is a something that many generations do not understand today, the magnitude of the existing threat that young people feel today. What I will say, however, is that as we have seen in those times, when generations are faced with challenges, they are coming to face them. Often, you know, movements find their leaders. I think we saw that in 2020.
JS: Gen Z is a generation of adults who have the belief that former President Trump has in politics and culture. John, how did they get shaped by it?
JDV: Each generation defines their political values in their teenage years, in their early 20s, and many of those are shaped by the president who served during that time of their lives. As [Gen Z] looked for an opportunity for us to unite, they saw a president and administration that was more inclined to divide the youth.
From the very early days of research at Harvard, we learned that the biggest prediction of whether or not a young person participated in politics or votes was whether they would see a tangible difference in their vote. And that first hundred days, the first six months, the first eight or nine months leading up to Charlottesville is all young people need to see about the tangible difference Donald Trump is making. And obviously in a way that disagrees with their values. And this is something that I think is a real sense of ignition in what we see as a massive level of political participation in 2017, 2018, 2019 and obviously 2020.
JS: David, you’re part of that generation and movement that came of age during the Trump presidency.
DH: Even with a president who is a Republican – who most Gen Z members tend to be more progressive – even despite that, we hope we’ll be pretty united in the early days. By the time Charlottesville rolled around and all these other things started to happen, it was very clear to many of us that that wasn’t going to happen. Our generation rose up and decided to unite ourselves.
However, what I dread at this point is the mental health crisis that Gen Z is facing right now and the fatigue and exhaustion that I know many of us feel, myself included. That despite our release of record numbers in 2018 and 2020, that our vote didn’t seem to have made a significant difference. If we don’t see a change in our vote …my fear is that some younger people will look at the events on January 6th and see that as an alternative, which is just OK if you don’t get what you want out of politics and try to overthrow the government.
JS: John, what can you say there?
JDV: One of the dangers, as David said somewhat connected to it, is the feeling of alienation that so many young people face. In a recent poll at the [Institute of Politics] released at the end of last year, we have a majority of young people, who are tens of millions of people, who say that in the past few weeks they have more than a few times felt anxious, despair. , depressed, isolated, and so on. And you have 25% indicating thoughts of self -harm.
It’s just a significant, significant crisis. When people are very depressed and very isolated and they withdraw, one of my worries for them is leaving, spending more time online where they can be more easily recruited to places where where they do not agree on ideology, but seek a kind of community and then may find themselves in a situation that is difficult to remove. Whether it’s the right groups or some of the people like David who talked about participating in the riot and insurrection on January 6, you know, hate groups, etcetera. That is my concern. We have so many young people, especially young men, who are vulnerable today.JS: In the book, John mentions demographers who estimate that by 2028 Generation Z and their immediate adults – millennials – will make up half of voters. What does this tell you about the future?
JDV: We think a lot about the division of this country, and clearly it is. But it is really divided by age. We look at Gen Z and millennials-two-thirds of them support candidates who are Democrats, not Republicans. And when you get to Baby Boomers and the Silent Generation, it’s a different scenario. As younger people get older, as voting begins to become a more regular habit, there is no doubt that they will vote for the values they have developed over the past two years: the concern about the way capitalism works. performed, concern about our climate, concern about racial justice. These are the issues that will drive young people to the polls. They have made a bigger impact on these issues than many people might appreciate, and those Democrats, as well as Republicans who don’t take them seriously now, underestimate them at their risk.
JS: David, what do we need to understand about Gen Z as we look to the future?
DH: I often hear seniors approach me and say, “I’m so thankful that your generation is standing up, and we can finally pass the baton on to you.” That is not possible. Not allowed. It will take every generation working together to fix these things. If our older generations or our country are only left to younger people to fix these things, they will never be fixed. Because no matter how strong we are, it should be an inter-generational coalition of people working together, and not patronizing or communicating with young people, but leading with young people and our vision and ideas for the future.
