A Moment with Actress Avery Konrad

Avery Konrad exists with many people. His amazing work in film and television, along with his background and love of dance prove Avery as one to watch amidst the ever-changing and evolving Hollywood scene. Avery most recently appeared in the science fiction-horror television series FROM, which premiered at Epix in February of 2022. In portraying the role of Sara Myers, Avery made himself as a complex, multifaceted, and haunted and character. Connor Duszynski spoke with the Vancouver-based actress and dancer to discuss her rising star, her thoughts on the success of FROM, her origins, and upcoming projects to watch out for.
CD: Good afternoon, Avery! Thank you so much for joining us. Tell us a little about yourself, where you came from, and how you started acting.
AK: Thanks for taking me. I grew up in a small town on the outskirts of Vancouver, BC. I have always been attracted to storytelling since childhood. Growing up, I was so close to my neighbors that I considered my siblings in many ways. I am the youngest of us all and I want to do everything they do. I expressed my interest in acting when I was quite young, maybe twelve or thirteen years old. My mom found a class for me to try, and this was the first time I had seen something I understood. I just got it, and I’ve wanted to act ever since. This was important for me at that age because, as I grew up with dyslexic, I wasn’t always smart in class. Having my brain wired differently, it was important that I felt appreciated and understood. Acting did that for me. This is a total gamechanger. That feeling of acceptance and expression sent me through the times I felt “it wasn’t for me.”
CD: It is very important to be able to express yourself creatively and artistically without fear. I’m sure many of our readers can relate to that struggle. With that said, what three words would you choose to describe yourself?
AK: The first three words that come to mind are resilient, honest, and goofy. There is definitely such a side to me. It’s very important to laugh and share that side with other people.
CD: I no longer agree. In your acting work, you have shared many sides and facets to your personality and the personalities of your characters to your audience. Can you tell us a little bit about the current projects you’re working on? Is there anything you might be teasing our readers about upcoming projects that we should keep an eye on?
AK: I just finished filming a comedy in February that I’m excited for everyone to see! After shooting From, which is darker and heavier, I think it will be a nice shift. It was nice to breathe and bring out to me that silly part that I hadn’t shown much in my previous work. I love it coming out after Mula, so viewers can see the difference between the shows and my roles. It’s called Honor Society and it will come out on Paramount+ later this year, starring Angourie Rice. It’s a story coming of age, and I play Angourie’s best friend who is a bit distant, colorful, and goofy as well.
CD: That sounds exciting! I can’t wait to watch it. By touching on the difference in these roles, can you expand on how you prepared to play Sara in Mula? What does that look like to you physically, mentally, and emotionally?
AK: There are so many layers to Sara. That was a testament to John Griffin who created the show and all the multidimensional characters. Every character is so deep. For Sara, when I had a breakdown, I seemed to understand her. I wish his inner struggle was there. Deep down, he was very caring and loving … maybe a little naive. However, he fights the thing, these voices telling him to do horrible things. It was something I had to sit on. I had to make sure I was very grounded in the circumstances.I read the scenes over and over, trying to understand what his action would be, what he would feel, and understand the headspace he was coming from. He clearly has a history of some mental health complications. Since it was something that was present in her life, I wanted to make sure I presented it as truthfully and politely as possible. The days before my scenes, I would take time to sink into that feeling and get into that headspace so I arrived on set ready to go.
CD: Can you expand this process a little further? Although I’m not an actor, I know that technique actors usually go through their days a bit differently, listening to music, isolating themselves from others, and other ways to land in the right headspace. What does this process look like for you and how do you feel?
AK: The days before the shooting I definitely isolated myself a bit, just so I could really understand Sara. As we got together and as I learned about Sara, it became easier for me to turn it on and off. In terms of music, I learned that for Sara, I had to listen to a lot of instrumentals. I didn’t listen much except that.
CD: What are your thoughts on playing a character this complex? While Sara is clearly struggling with her inner and mental struggles, there is a sense of duality in her. Viewers will also see that he is very compassionate in his ways. What can viewers get from your description of him?
AK: When I first read the breakdown for her character, I knew Sara had to be complicated. He is human. He is not just this or that, he is not one dimensional. I need to find humanity in him and revive that. While he can do things that distract viewers throughout the show, there’s still more to him than that. It is important for me to describe him in a realistic and true way; I had to show him humanity. He truly believes that everything he has done is for the good of his family. I think this way, viewers can connect with his struggle. His brother was really his driving force throughout this series, as they were trapped in this town together. It’s also important for viewers to understand that the weight of the place where Sara and her brother are confined is so heavy, it does things you obviously wouldn’t do under normal circumstances. I actually struggled with scenes where he didn’t fight this internal struggle more than anything because I hadn’t seen him in this light so many times.
CD: Can you share with our readers what happened on set and behind-the-scenes in the filming of From?
AK: The scene in Episode 5 with Ethan, Nathan, and the goats is something I will never forget! We had a goat walk not just in the frame but straight into the camera and I was thinking about how we were going to shoot that scene. It’s so cute! But honestly, the whole experience was something I will never forget. I often think of admiring the set between scenes, at the diner and with the crew. This is wonderful. I will definitely return to this project for the rest of my career as a complete game-changer both personally and professionally.
CD: Hopefully there are bloopers of goats somewhere out there. I would be surprised if you were able to keep your face straight. In addition to all the great acting projects you’ve been involved in and filmed, you also stay busy with Legacy Dance Productions in your town. How do you manage work-life balance? Also, is it a struggle to keep your personal life private?
AK: I’m really learning to juggle both. Even though I’ve spent most of my life acting and dancing, I’m still learning to fly. It’s a learning curve. At the same time, I am so thankful that I can do both and be as busy as ever. This is what I have always wanted to do. It became a whirlwind. As far as my personal life is concerned, I have never been in a place where people are interested in my daily life. With that said, I learn something new every day in terms of growing and managing the opportunities presented to me.I feel guilty sometimes I force myself. But it is important to make mistakes to grow. I say this to the kids I teach all the time.
CD: What are some of the aspects that make you a great mentor to these kids, in addition to being a phenomenal coach?
AK: When my sisters … I mean my neighbors! When my neighbors opened the dance studio, I knew I wanted to get involved because we danced together as we grew up. This is something we all love. I am thankful that they allowed me to be a part of their studio. I watched them teach. What’s great about us as a team is that we treat kids to a standard regardless of their age. We want to teach them a good work ethic, showing time and being willing to encourage each other, as well as the importance of being good and kind. It is important for our children to show the same love to other teams as they show to each other. Especially now that COVID is over, some of our kids are competing in person for the first time. It was a new experience for many of them. It’s amazing to be with them for experiences and memories like this.
CD: Would you say that mentoring these dancers is the most enjoyable work you do?
AK: Really! When I’m not into filming, I still do myself to help coach and watch the kids dance by Zoom.There are instances where I’m set four hours before classes kids and I carved out time to watch them and be there for them. I missed them so much without me and I can’t wait to get back to them. Getting love from them is priceless. I love being a part of these kids ’lives.
CD: What would you consider your favorite dance style and why?
AK: I grew up fond of super technical dance like ballet. However, as I got older, I started to love hip-hop more. This is interesting because in so many ways, they are completely conflicting styles. In today’s era, I can definitely say my favorite is hip-hop and street jazz, in large part because of the music. I love how upbeat it is.
CD: Can you also say that hip-hop is your favorite genre of music?
AK: I’m an R&B girl forever! Even from a young age when I danced ballet, I loved R&B. I love the way it makes me feel.
CD: Do you have a favorite artist by chance?
AK: So many, it’s hard to pick a favorite actor. I really reflect on the music of Summer Walker, and of SZA and Kehlani. I also play Frank Ocean every day.
CD: They are all amazing choices! I like all their music. Share with our readers the three songs you’ve been repeating so far.
AK: I’ve been playing Lucky Daye’s new album Candydrip since it came out. Honestly, I’ve been repeating the whole album for weeks.
CD: What is your favorite love song and best breakup song you can share with us?
AK: The best breakup song is Aly & AJ’s “Potential Breakup Song”, handsdown! It’s a banger. There are so many love songs to choose from, but I probably have to say “L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole.
CD: Do you want to personally consider singing in your future? You are so multi-talented, I am sure you can!
AK: Well, I grew up in a very musical household. My mother is a singer and my brother is an actor. It’s always been a prominent part of my life and I want to make a musical someday. The ability to sing, dance, and act on a project is a dream. I don’t know if I’ll make a career of it, but it’s definitely something I want to dip into my finger.
CD: And do you have a favorite karaoke song or song in general that you like to sing?
AK: Honestly, “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid is my jam.
CD: I like it! That song reminds me of my childhood. Is there any album or song you know like the back of your hand?
AK: Well, Billie Eilish’s “Male Fantasy” is a great one! I like that whole album, but especially that song. I saw her in concert just last week and she was amazing. That song has been playing on my mind ever since.
