Here’s a story: We were working on this big project on the West Side [the bad Trump City, now known as Riverside South] and there were a lot of influential people who opposed the project. We tried to make an agreement with the consortium of these people. There was a very important woman on the side of the group opposing us, and Donald had to have lunch with her. He said he was so ugly and he didn’t want to see her sitting alone with him on his perch at the Plaza Hotel, so he sent me to a meeting with him.
Is the idea that if you were there it wouldn’t be considered a date?
That [no one would think] he could be with such a nasty woman. It’s just so ridiculous.
He always criticizes men and women. He was very tough on fat people.
Do you remember anyone he specifically targeted?
Someone who worked for the city that Donald referred to as “the fat fuck,” but I don’t think you can print that. That’s how we came to know him – not by his name, but as “the fat fuck.”
Also, we had a guy who was a lawyer for us and he was overweight, and Donald commented to him like, “You really like your Snickers, huh?” or something like that. He even said something like that to me. At one point I put on a lot of weight, I was still working for him as a consultant, and he commented about my weight.
Have you ever seen anyone fight him because of a comment like that?
In that kind of comment? No. Why would you? I mean, there’s nothing to gain from that – standing him up for something else [maybe], but that’s not it.
He seems to have been a bully.
Eh, not too bully – more of loudmouth.
You also worked for Ivana Trump while they were married, right?
Yes. He’s the president of the Plaza Hotel, and we’re doing extensive renovations of it, and I worked for both of them. Donald is the owner and he is the president and they both have their own ideas of what to do there, and often they disagree. It was as if I was torn between the two of them.
Do you feel like he stopped taking her seriously once?
Not that he stopped taking her too seriously, I think, he got mad at her and decided he was the boss and he wasn’t, and maybe he gave her too much power.
Do you think that’s what ruined their relationship?
[laughs] Well, that and his bullshit.Have you ever seen him express sexism against Ivana?
Well, I mean, I know he joked about how he paid her $ 1 and all the clothes he could wear or buy. He said those things and he just laughed.
Did you hear him joke that he was paid for clothes?
Yes, that was on television and reported in the news and things like that. [In fact, at a press conference announcing Ivana’s new position as president of the Plaza, Trump was quoted as saying, “My wife, Ivana, is a brilliant manager. I’ll pay her $ 1 a year and all the clothes he can buy! ” According to Vanity Fair, after the conference, Ivana called her friends crying and asked, “How can Donald embarrass me this way?” -Ed.]I knew she had a hard time with Ivana because by the end of my association with her on the Plaza project, when we were finishing work and stuff, I went to her and she was really overly stressed dealing with her. him. There was this stone he had chosen-it was a fine stone, but it was a cheaper version of a very expensive stone, and when he saw it installed he got angry and shouted at me and accused me of making fun of him. . cheap and he says is bullshit. He was very angry because of that. I was shocked at how upset I was. But we will always fight like that.
Do you feel that he treats you differently than your male peers?
No, he was no different from me. He was tough on everyone. He was the best or the worst, like he is today. I mean, everything is either the best or the worst, and sometimes he was really good and sometimes he was really bad, but he was tough on everybody. He doesn’t treat women differently than men, not then. Again, you were speaking 25, 30 years ago.
Did his attitudes toward women ever change?
You know, until Marla’s thing happened I didn’t hear her talk about women, and then she talked about women in ways of contempt and she opposed women.
I think [that time] was a sea change for him. I think he started to despise women when he started going through his financial problems. He said he hangs out with women and he ignores his businesses, and his brother and the executives at hotels and casinos neglect the business and he ignores it. He tied it to his dallians on the women.
He blames the women he cheats on with his wife because of his financial problems?
Well, he sort of blames himself for not paying attention, but he said he can’t resist it because a lot of women are chasing him – that kind of thing.
You said earlier that you did not feel that he treated you differently than your male colleagues. Do you know if the men you worked with paid you the same amount?
I don’t think I am – but I have to say, I don’t know if it’s a female thing. I was paid well, don’t get me wrong. But Donald has something about lawyers. See, everyone else was a lawyer, almost, who worked for him except me and the vendors, and I think he paid the lawyers a little more than he paid me, but I can’t say that I think he discriminated against me. because I am a woman. I didn’t think that was true at the time. He is not like that. He took me because-he told me this-he told me he thought I was a murderer when he took me to the Hyatt. And he said, “Men are better than women, but a good woman is better than ten good men.” That’s what he said, and I think he really believed it. And she was right to believe, and perhaps it’s a sexist belief, that women have to prove themselves and men don’t, so women have to work harder.
