Professor Floyd is a professor emeritus of Information Systems and Management at Orfalea College of Business. Floyd’s research interests include simplicity in IT design and development, healthcare information systems, IT education, and distance learning among others. His work has appeared in numerous publications including the Journal of Management Education, Journal of Management Systems, Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, Management Science, IEEE Computer, Journal of Integrated Design and Process Science, and Texas Intellectual Property Law Journal. Professor Floyd has served on the program committee of several conferences which are the IEEE COMPSAC Symposium on Computer Education, Learning and Teaching (CELT), the workshop on Open Education Resources (OER), and the International Workshop on Advanced Visual Knowledge Management. Tools (AVKMT).

Professor Floyd has participated in research grants such as ITsy – “IT Simply Works”, an EU FET Support Action (2010 – 2011), “A Study of Alternative Teacher Certification Programs” ($ 1,022,000) funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Research and Enhancement, and a U.S. Navy grant to develop computer -based environmental awareness training.

Professor Floyd has taught courses covering topics such as database design and development, programming, business information systems, e-commerce, systems analysis and design, human resource information systems, management database, database auditing, and accounting information systems. In addition to technology -focused classes, Floyd has taught business negotiation, leadership, and international business courses.

Professor Floyd designed and taught the first class accounting information system offered at OCOB (1991 – 1992). As OCOB’s Director of Graduate Programs, Floyd organized one of the first OCOB MBA study abroad programs, bringing students to Tec de Monterrey in Cuernavaca, Mexico (2001-2003). Floyd was one of the first at Cal Poly to use distance learning technologies, working with CIO John Dutra at Sun Microsystems on their Distributed Tutored Video Instruction (DTVI) project (1995-1996) and with Professor Tom Athey at Cal Poly Pomona co-teaching a joint MBA class from two campuses (1993-1994) sharing lectures in real time.

Professor Floyd has received over 25 awards and accolades for his excellence in education including Outstanding IS Professor (2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017), Faculty Emeritus Award (provided by OCOB emeritus faculty) (1995, 2009, 2009, 2009, 2009, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2017). , 2014), ISA Best Information Systems Professor Award (2014), Management Area Most Outstanding Faculty (1994, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008), MBA Outstanding Faculty / Advisor Award (2003), OCOB Outstanding Faculty Award (1996), Professional Excellence Award (1995), MBA Most Involved Professor (1995), MBA Most Outstanding Professor (1994), Management of Technology Award, (1991), NCR Computer Award (1991), and Excellence in Teaching Award (Stern, NYU, 1989) . Floyd has organized and conducted study abroad trips for Executive MBA students at the University of Potsdam in the California technology industry, visiting companies such as Apple, Nor1, Ologic, Promega, eBay, Cisco, Chevron, Hyperion, NetApp, Google, Facebook, and Amgen among others (2012, 2014, 2018).

In 2011 – 2012 Professor Floyd was awarded the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) Full Professor grant at the University of Potsdam, Germany.

Floyd is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Immersive Software Engineering integrated BSc / MSc, an innovative studio-based program underway at the University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland (2021 to present).

Professor Floyd has worked closely with industry partners to improve educational resources for Information Systems students by bringing in equipment and software through grants from HP, Oracle, Peoplesoft, AWS, Cisco, Symantec, and NetApp among others. Floyd has also served on academic advisory boards including Peoplesoft (1998 – 2005), Microsoft Dynamics (2011 – 2012), and NetApp (2012 – 2017).
