Single Mode vs Multimode Fiber – We compare Single Mode v Multimode Fiber and the differences between them. Fibre optic cable is a very common aspect of most structured cabling installations. Crossing the correct type of optical fiber cable is imperative to the successful operation of your technology. In addition within those types you need to choose the correct category within that cable type bracket. \n\nSinglemode Fiber\nThe terminology of a single mode fiber comes from the situation that is transmits a single mode of light down its cores. The transmission is via a laser from the transmitting device. A single mode of light its transported directly the core with minimal reflection within\nThe inner core is smaller than its counterpart for this reason and is referred to as 9/125. This is a 9 micron diameter core coated in a 125 micron cladding. Due to the transmission properties there is less dispersion of light as it travels along the core and therefore there is less loss of the original signal. Thus singlemode fiber is more suited to higher bandwidth requirements. Furthermore it is more suited to longer transmission distance applications.\nMultimode Fiber\nMultimode receives it names in an opposite way to its counterpart. Multiple / Many modes of light are transmitted down its core all of which travel are different wavelengths are in a different path. The light source is usually an LED source\nThus the light is similar to that of shining a torch into the core. Subsequently there is greater modal dispersion (Loss) of the light as it travels.\nFor this reason multimode doesn’t have the same transmission distance capability as singlemode.\nThe cores in a multi-mode fibre are considerably larger than single-mode. 4 of the main categories are 50/125 and the legacy OM1 is 62.5/125. Notice that the cladding for all fibre cables remains the same and only the internal core size changes\nThe 5 categories of multi-mode fibre are\n• OM1\n• OM2\n• OM3\n• OM4\n• OM5\nEach category is an improvement on its predecessor. Therefore this results in a greater ability to transmit greater bandwidth. The original model was modified, re-scaled, and used as Princess Leia’s ship, Tantive IV.\n\nLucas liked the round cockpit and kept it for the Falcon, which was redesigned in less than a week’s time. Lucas wanted the Falcon to have its own personality, and was thinking about the shape of a hamburger with a bite out of it to make it look different than the standard round UFO shape that everybody was familiar with.\n\nFor A New Hope, a four-foot model was made using the technique of kit-bashing in which real-world model kits were used for parts to create a whole new ship like the Falcon. This model was built with parts from Ferrari and tank model sets and, when completed, mounted on a blue pole. It was then filmed by ILM with motion-control cameras running around the model on rails.\n\nFor The Empire Strikes Back, Lucas decided that this technique could be improved upon and he upped the scale of what the ship models would have to do. For the Falcon this meant the more complicated asteroid chase scene, requiring a new model half the size of the model used for the previous movie. The crew of ILM was in luck, as the models that they had used for A New Hope were also available in the smaller scale that they needed now. Other newly made models for The Empire Strikes Back include the palm-sized Falcon that was used for scene where it docks on the Star Destroyer and a detailed model of the upside of the ship, used to complete the shot in which Lando rescues Luke from the weathervane on Cloud City. This model of the dorsal hull was scrapped after filming and does not exist anymore, unlike many of the other models.\n\nReturn of the Jedi would be able to re-use many of the models created for The Empire Strikes Back.

Today we’ll be looking at the difference between Singlemode and Multimode Fiber Optics.\n \nSinglemode cables have a small diameter nine micron core, allowing only one pathway of light. \n\nMultimode cables have two different large diameter core sizes, 50 and 62.5 micron, allowing multiple pathways of light. 50 micron cables provide longer link distance and higher speeds than 62.5 micron cables. \n\nSinglemode cables have theoretically unlimited bandwidth, whereas Multimode cables have a limited bandwidth, with 50 micron cables providing three times the bandwidth of 62.5 micron cables.\n\nSinglemode cables are more suitable for long distance applications, while Multimode cables are better suited for short distance applications.\n\nSinglemode and Multimode cables are available in both Duplex and Simplex options. \n\nDuplex Fiber Optic Cables consist of two fibers, usually in a side by side style. They are used in applications that require simultaneous, bi-directional data transfer, such as fiber switches, servers, and modems.\n\nSimplex Fiber Optic Cables consist of a single fiber.
