In the case of gold, all streams in an area would be panned at the appropriate trap sites looking for a show of ‘colour’ or gold in the river trail.\n\nOnce a small occurrence or show was found, it was then necessary to intensively work the area with pick and shovel, and often via the addition of some simple machinery such as a sluice box, races and winnows, to work the loose soil and rock looking for the appropriate materials (in this case, gold). For most base metal shows, the rock would have been mined by hand and crushed on site, the ore separated from the gangue by hand.\n\nOften, these shows were short-lived, exhausted and abandoned quite soon, requiring the prospector to move onwards to the next and hopefully bigger and better show. Occasionally, though, the prospector would strike it rich and be joined by other prospectors and larger-scale mining would take place. Although these are thought of as \”old\” prospecting methods, these techniques are still used today but usually coupled with more advanced techniques such as geophysical magnetic or gravity surveys.\n\nIn most countries in the 19th and early 20th century, it was very unlikely that a prospector would retire rich even if he was the one who found the greatest of lodes. For instance Patrick (Paddy) Hannan, who discovered the Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie, died without receiving anywhere near a fraction of the value of the gold contained in the lodes. The same story repeated at Bendigo, Ballarat, Klondike and California.\n\nIn the United States and Canada prospectors were lured by the promise of gold, silver, and other precious metals. They traveled across the mountains of the American West, carrying picks, shovels and gold pans. The majority of early prospectors had no training and relied mainly on luck to discover deposits.\n\nOther gold rushes occurred in Papua New Guinea, Australia at least four times, and in South Africa and South America. In all cases, the gold rush was sparked by idle prospecting for gold and minerals which, when the prospector was successful, generated ‘gold fever’ and saw a wave of prospectors comb the countryside.\n\nModern prospectors today rely on training, the study of geology, and prospecting technology.\n\nKnowledge of previous prospecting in an area helps in determining location of new prospective areas. You know, prospecting is kind of that gray area between your marketing and your sales process. I think a marketer would probably call it one to one marketing. A salesperson would call it prospecting. I like to go with the sales term, just because, well, I’ll tell you why. \n\nProspecting to me is that in the trenches, roll up your sleeves, I’m going to reach out to people, and I’m going to get them to come and talk to me about their business. I’m going to get them to get interested in my services. And then eventually, I’m going to sell to them. That’s kind of what we’re talking about, right? \n\nSo, maybe it’s through LinkedIn, maybe it’s through cold calling, maybe it’s through networking, but you’re actually getting in front of people on a one to one basis and you’re offering a consultation or you’re offering your services. \n\nThat to me is prospecting. It’s integral to getting your sales really running. Now when you take that same process though, and you operationalize it. So, like, you do networking events every week, and you go to these networking events and you get this many clients each month from these activities, right? \n\nWe’re talking about the same things but when you do it on that scale of like this is how it works, that to me is when it becomes marketing, right? So, your marketing is kind of like, how do we get attention and your sales is converting that attention into clients, into cash. And the gray area in between is what I would call prospecting. \n\nToo many of you are not doing any prospecting. You sit there, and I’m not trying to call you out, so just talk in general like, entrepreneurs will come to me and they’ll say, \”Hey, I can’t get any clients.\” I’m like, \”Okay what are you doing for marketing?\” \”Oh, I wrote 50 blog posts this week.\” \”Okay, how many did you publish?\” \”Oh, I didn’t publish any yet because I need to get them really perfect.\” Well, okay you didn’t do any marketing, right? \n\nIf you need clients, you need to get in front of people and you need to offer them something. Offer free consultation. Come talk to me. You start building those relationships, that’s how you make money. So, if you’re not prospecting, get out there and do it today. \n\nYour challenge is for today. Normally I say, \”Hey, you know, let’s do this in the next little bit,\” but today I want you to pick up the phone and call somebody. But so does EVERY business model. Pick any business… let’s say a barber shop. If that barber doesn’t recruit, he’s going to stay small and only be able to earn profit off of his own time and ability. But if he brings on another barber, he can make a percentage off their efforts also, and begin to leverage himself.\n\nWhether you pay them a salary or you pay them straight commission is irrelevant. The point is, everybody has to recruit. Period.\n\n#2 – Over-saturation in network marketing is an excuse. It’s not real. People draw out this exponential math problem of \”you get 5, who get 5, who get 5\” … and soon the numbers are larger than the population of the planet. That’s not real, and it never happens that way.\n\nEveryone in network marketing earns on finite levels, and so it’s actually possible to make more money than the people above you. If you blame saturation, go to a younger/newer company.\n\n#3 – Be cautious who you take advice from.\nThis series has been focused on \”Kylie\” — a makeup artist who has made made it her business to bash network marketers. She is an armchair critic — someone who has never done this business — but parades around as if she knows it. She’s the one advising you?\n\n#4 – Just quit vs. Get tough\nIn her advice, she says \”Just quit, that’s what you should do. It’s okay…\” WOW!\nWhat does \”I quit\” mean? It means apathy. It means, \”I can’t do anything about it.\”\nIf you have that philosophy, I would guess you have a long string of failures behind you.\n\nReal experts look at problems by evaluating the data. They gather lots of data points at each area that moves the business forward. And then, they evaluate each one of them. \n – \”Am I doing what I should be doing?\”\n – \”Am I effective in the pipeline?\n – \”Is the company shipping good products?\” \n\nBe brutally honest, and determine what the real problem is. And yes, if you determine the company is the problem, then get another company.\n\n#5 – Saying \”it’s not your fault\” is popular, but it creates failure.\nWhen you give you excuses to others, and they give you sympathy, it feels really therapeutic… but actually it’s really damaging. If you want to succeed in life, go back to every failure and figure out what you did or didn’t do that caused the failure.\n\nTo have success in network marketing, master the pipeline. Know and do each column.\n\n1. Generate a lead (can be in person or online, however you want)\n2. Contact that lead\n3. Set an appointment\n4. Do a presentation (can be online, can be a pre-recorded video)\n5. Follow up until they say YES or NO\n\nThe sales pipeline is the law of every organization (not just an MLM business).
