Krista Horton How does she do it

This week I want to say hello to dear mom @krista.horton who makes motherhood look so cool. She has a passion for interior design and her babies and if you follow her on Instagram her feed shows just that. Sometimes you just need to go with the flow and enjoy the season you are in and Krista is truly an inspiration, to help us! I hope you like it! xx-d

Tell us something about yourself: where do you live, age, marital status, number of children and occupation.

Hi! My name is Krista Horton and I live in Bakersfield, CA! I am 30 years old, married to my husband Bryce and have our 2 little babes Boston aka Boss (3) and Kollyns aka Kolly (1). I’m an Instagram influencer and like to blog on the side every now and then! I devote most of my time and energy to Instagram so my blog can take a back seat, but hopefully I’ll be able to devote more time to it one day! I also have an interior design business with my sister in law/bestie! As a stay-at-home mom, social media influencer and interior designer, my plate couldn’t be fuller and I love it so much!

Describe a day in your life.

A day in my life is so contradictory! We wake up and usually rush to get ready and head out the door. Some days we just go out and run errands, meet up to play, or just get out of the house to do something. Other days my sister-in-law and I (and our four children) go shopping for clients or we take the children to our mother-in-law’s so we can go to a client meeting or installation. I try to devote one day a week to a lazy day that consists of staying home in our pajamas, playing, and trying to clean! We always try to get home by 3 or 4 so we’ll be home when my hubs finish! And that’s usually when he takes a picture of us when I need him and then we do the normal dinner, bath, hang out, clean up and go to sleep!

do you have help A nanny or housekeeper? Family?

Our whole family lives super close which is so nice! There is always someone to watch the kids when we need a babysitter!

How do you manage to have “me” time?

I usually try to take the kids to the grandparents’ every now and then for my hair, facial or nails done! A little pampering has always been my favorite thing to do! Or for me and Hubs to go out on a date.

How do you manage to take the time to stay in shape? Do you work out? Diet?

I could definitely invest more time in this area. I don’t exercise or diet, but I’m always out with the kids, which I think is a workout in itself! I used to walk a lot more, but the weather has been too cold or rainy lately!

Do you prepare every day? Makeup, hair and curated outfits? If yes, how do you do it with children?

I get ready 5-6 days a week because we’re usually out, so I try to make us somewhat presentable! I just get up and get ready right away so I can get this over with! Some days it’s just a little bit of foundation and mascara with a messy bun, but if I’m really lucky I can shower and get a little fancier!

Has your style changed after motherhood?

I’ve always been a laid back girl! I definitely think I beat myself up more these days than I used to because I feel like I need it to make me feel better! Looking in the mirror at 30 isn’t what it used to be (like it was at 20). But I definitely stay away from heels when I’m lugging around two kids!

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Drive through! Especially Starbucks! It’s just so convenient and I can’t resist a green peach tea (no water)!

If you are breastfeeding, how do you plan your day around breastfeeding and outings?

I’m still breastfeeding Kolly, but I’m only breastfeeding on the go! She’s older now, so she doesn’t need it on call (although sometimes she thinks she does). But I’ve always gone with the flow and just breastfed anytime, anywhere!

On average, how many hours of sleep do you get per night?

I would say around 9! My kids usually wake up around 8 or 9am but I feel so guilty about staying up late trying to catch up on email or Instagram.

What is your priority and what is sacrificed? For example, everyone looks good but the house is a mess, or the house is clean but work dates are pushed back.

Our top priority is that the kids are happy, my work is happy and that we get ready. The house is always a disaster when we leave in the morning, but I clean it up when we get home and always pick up the house before I go to bed! Oh and laundry! That is terribly sacrificed!

Do you cook for your family every day? If yes, how do you plan them?

Biggest sinking right here! Just ask my hubs! I never plan our meals and I hate to cook! We eat out or go out more often than we should!

Have you ever felt like you were losing yourself to motherhood and/or life? If yes, how did you get back?

No, I’ve really never felt like this before! I think that’s because I was so ready to have kids and I think they’re so much fun! I always take them with me to everything! It’s so boring without her!

Does my husband help you with anything specific? If yes, what and how?

A LOT OF! He always helps me take photos or watch the kids when I’m trying to get something done! When it comes to nightly routines, the two of us always work together! And he usually cooks when we cook!

How do you deal with motherhood and marriage?

We definitely text and talk throughout the day so we don’t break up! Some nights we put the kids to bed way too late which doesn’t leave us any time for ourselves but we’ve tried to work on it more!! We love ourselves a date night here and there which really helps bring us back together!

do you work Do you work in the office or at home? What is your work and how do you do it during the week?

For my social media, I work from home (or wherever I am). Usually on my phone! For my interior design we work at home or go shopping or to our clients homes. I try to answer all my emails during lunchtime or when the kids are going out for the night or when Bryce comes home from work!

Has your circle of friends changed since you became a mother? If so, how do you meet new mommy friends?

I definitely feel like I made so many more friends once I became a mom! It really brings you together and you develop a really strong bond with these mommies!

What is your least favorite chore that you dread?

vacuuming! So my hub does that for me! Thank God!

Describe a recent experience when you didn’t have it all together and how you dealt with it.

Oh god I feel like this happens all the time! I never have everything together! All you can do is roll the punches! I’m not a super stressful person, so I try to just go with the flow and not get too carried away! Life is just easier that way!

Fill in the blank: As a mother, it is a luxury to __________________

Go to the toilet alone.

What is your balance philosophy and does it exist in your home?

I definitely feel that in order to live a happy, healthy life, you need to have a balance! I can’t say we always break this balance down to a science, but we work on it every day!

What are your dreams outside of motherhood that you would like to achieve?

I love this social media community and am an influencer! I find it so fun to take pictures and promote products that make my life easier and that I really love! I also hope to really grow with our interior design business! Who knows, maybe one day we’ll get our own TV show.

What’s one thing that keeps you sane?

Starbucks and/or Malibu and Diet Coke. lol

What question would you like to ask our Mama readers?

What kind of images/posts do you like to see the most? Fashion, home or lifestyle? Or do you like to see a mix of everything?

Bakersfield Mom finds big success as Instagram influencer

Scroll through Krista Horton’s Instagram and you’ll see the kind of pictures you see on most mom accounts: her kids Kolly and Boston, the family dog, her husband Bryce, and their family vacations. But unlike most moms with over half a million followers, Krista has made a career out of capturing her life as a mom in Bakersfield.

Her contributions date back to 2012.

“I’d dress up little matching outfits for myself and Boston and Bryce would come home and I’d be like, ‘Babe, do you want to take our picture?'” she said. “And it became our daily thing.”

Her “Mommy and Me” posts featuring baby Boston soon caught the eye.

“I’d say probably within six months of that, when stores started reaching out to me to say, ‘Hey, can we send you some stuff,'” she said. “Getting free clothes or whatever was such a big deal and I thought it was just the coolest thing ever.”

It didn’t take long for free clothes to become more. A fellow blogger informed her that she could charge money in addition to receiving free products.

Then business began to flourish. Her following also grew. Krista says she’s made a name for herself on Instagram for her matching outfits and the authenticity of her mom life.

She says the price of one of her posts started at $25.

“These people would pay for a commercial. These people would pay for a billboard.

So it’s like, why shouldn’t they pay to promote their stuff?

As her following grew into the hundreds of thousands, that price increased.

“Assuming you have 10,000 followers, you could make $100 a post,” Krista said. “The amount of money that companies are paying influencers is overwhelming, and I don’t think a lot of people realize that.”

With over 500,000 followers of Krista around the world, that’s a potential of thousands of dollars for each deal with one brand.

“There is so much behind the scenes with every shoot you see. If it takes place in your house, it ensures that your house is picked up. It makes sure you have the right lighting and the right throwback,” she said.

Posting about companies and products she cares about, but sometimes dismissing those she can’t stand behind.

“Everything I’ve posted I’ve used or loved. So I feel like it’s just something I’m sharing, and hopefully someone else will see it and be like, ‘Oh, that’s such a great idea’ or ‘Oh, I’ve always wanted to do that’.”

But she says what she’s most proud of is her own story. Earlier this year, Krista took followers on her journey as she attempted to fulfill her sister’s dream of motherhood by becoming her surrogate.

“Every little bit I can pass on from the experience she went through might help someone else. That means more to me than anything. More than any product I’ve ever shared,” Krista said. “I just think it’s the coolest thing that people can connect with each other on this level.”

And when Krista suffered a miscarriage months later, it seemed like opening up to her followers was just as important to her as it was to her.

“Such a personal difficult thing to go through but then when you hear everyone else’s stories it’s like I’m not alone. It happens so often,” Krista said. “Then you hear other stories and realize that I’m so grateful for what I have because there are so many people out there who are going through much harder times.”

But she says it’s a balancing act between opening up and not sharing too much. “We try to be careful about certain things and I’m always extra careful with my kids. But we’re putting our lives out there, and I feel like there’s always a little worry when you do that.”

And with such a large following, she has to deal with criticism from time to time.

“You have to fight back. There’s always going to be someone out there who doesn’t agree with you,” Krista said.

“But I mean, for every 500,000 messages, there are probably two negative ones. So you can’t focus on the negative.”

Although keeping up with such a large following can mean a lot of screen time for Krista, she says that life as an influencer has actually given her more opportunities for quality time.

“There are days when I’m laying in my bed at the end of the night and wondering why I was on the phone so much today,” Krista said. “But at the same time, if it wasn’t me, I’d be working eight hours that day and I wouldn’t see her.”

This job allows her to work from home, travel with family and will soon be joined by her husband Bryce.

“In fact, starting January 1st, Bryce will be at my house and working with me,” Krista said.

Even with so many big names in the Instagram industry flocking to big cities, you can rest assured that the Horton family is staying true to their Bakersfield roots.

“This is definitely our home,” she said, “there’s definitely no other place I’d rather be.”
