Both singers possessed a high tenor vocal range, but unlike Lee, who is a finger stylist, Shelley played bass with a guitar pick. As well as singing and playing bass for the group, Shelley also played keyboards on their early albums, most notably Mellotron on “Young Is a World” off their second album Squawk.
Budgie’s November 2010 tour of Eastern Europe had to be canceled due to Shelley being hospitalized on November 9 in Wejherowo, Poland with a 6cm aortic aneurysm. After the operation, he returned to the UK to recover, but no decision had yet been made on the band’s future.[3] At the time of his death in 2022, Budgie was considered dissolved or on hiatus, having not performed or recorded since Shelley’s hospitalization.

Budgie were a Welsh heavy metal band from Cardiff. They are described by author Garry Sharpe-Young as one of the earliest heavy metal bands and a seminal influence on many acts in this fast, heavy rock scene[3] (an influence on the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM)). . and acts like Metallica[4]), which were played as early as 1971.[5] The band has been called “among the heaviest metal of their time”.[1]

Budgie was formed in Cardiff, Wales in 1967 under the name Hills Contemporary Grass. Their original line-up consisted of Burke Shelley (vocals and bass), Tony Bourge (guitar and vocals) and Ray Phillips (drums). Budgie the following year and recorded their first demo.[3] The band originally considered going under the “Six Ton Budgie” moniker, but settled on the shorter, single-word variant. Burke Shelley has said that the band’s name comes from the fact that he “loved the idea of playing loud, heavy rock, but naming us after something diametrically opposed to that”.
Their debut album of heavy, blues-leaning hard rock was recorded at Rockfield Studios with Black Sabbath producer Rodger Bain[9] and released in 1971, followed by Squawk in 1972. The third album, Never Turn Your Back on a Friend (1973 ), included “Breadfan”, which was covered by Metallica in 1987. Metallica had covered another Budgie song earlier in their career, “Crash Course in Brain Surgery”. Ray Phillips left the band before fourth album In for the Kill! was recorded.[10] He was replaced by Pete Boot.[11]
In late 1974, Boot left and was replaced by Steve Williams for the Bandolier album. For concerts promoting this album (and its follow-up, If I Were Brittania I’d Waive the Rules), the band was reinforced by second guitarist Myf Isaac. Music from the 1978 LP Impeckable was featured in the 1979 film J-Men Forever (which was screened frequently on USA Network’s television “Night Flight” in the 1980s), now considered a cult classic. Both Bourge and Isaac left in 1978 and were replaced by former Trapeze guitarist Robert Kendrick and former Hawkwind guitarist Huw Lloyd-Langton. Langton’s stay was short-lived as Kendrick convinced the band to fire him. After being dropped by A&M and without a new record deal in late 1978, this lineup faltered, and after 12 months, Kendrick was replaced by “Big” John Thomas (born February 21, 1952) in late 1979. This line-up recorded two albums for Kingsley Ward’s ‘Active’ label: Power Supply (1980) and Nightflight (1981). In 1982 they signed to RCA for Deliver Us from Evil, their last “major label” recording.

The band continued to enjoy success during the new wave of Britain’s heavy metal era, playing Reading Festival in 1980 and headlining the festival in 1982. They built a special following in Poland, where in 1982 they became the first heavy metal band to play behind the Iron Curtain. Also notable was her tour in support of Ozzy Osbourne’s Blizzard of Ozz Tour.
The band stopped playing in 1987.[10] The members went into studio production and occasionally guest-starred on other projects. Thomas worked primarily on the Phenomena CD with Glenn Hughes[15][16] from Black Sabbath Studios.
Although the group had little commercial success in America, they enjoyed a strong cult following in Texas,[17] and are known to have received radio airplay from Joe Anthony and Lou Roney on KMAC/KISS radio in the 1970s received in San Antonio. [18] and KSHE95 in St. Louis. The band re-formed in 1995 and 1996 with different drummers for one-off performances for the open air festivals “La Semana Alegre” in San Antonio, Texas. They toured from 2002 to 2006 mostly in the UK, NYC/NJ area, Dallas and with a few shows in Europe including Sweden Rock Festival and a return to Poland. In 1999 the band officially reformed in Letchworth.
In 2006 Budgie embarked on a 35 date UK tour and released a new album, You’re All Living in Cuckooland on 7 November of that year. In 2007 they also played in Sweden and Poland.
On July 4, 2007, Lees announced his departure from the band to focus on teaching and a solo career. Following the departure of Lees, Dio lead guitarist/songwriter Craig Goldy offered his services while Ronnie James Dio fulfilled his obligations with Heaven & Hell. In February 2008, Craig joined Goldy Budgie on their first tour of Australia and has continued to play with the band as “guest guitarist” for all of their shows.

Budgie is best known as a hard rock[2] and heavy metal[1][2][23] band that incorporated elements of progressive rock[23] and humor into their musical style.[23] Beginning with 1975’s Bandolier, Budgie also began incorporating funk into their music.[23]
Budgie’s music was described in the All-Music Guide as a cross between Rush and Black Sabbath.[2] Burke Shelley’s vocals have been compared to Geddy Lee for his similar approach to high-pitched Banshee wails (coincidentally, Shelley and Lee are also the bassists in their respective power trio bands). Although Budgie remained fairly obscure during her early career, many future hard rock/metal stars have cited her as a major influence and have covered her songs, including Iron Maiden,[24] Metallica,[25] Megadeth,[26] Van Halen, [27 ] Melvins,[28] Queens of the Stone Age, Alice in Chains,[29] and Soundgarden.[30]
Metallica released a cover of “Breadfan” as the B-side of their single “Harvester of Sorrow” in September 1988. It was later included on their 1998 album Garage Inc. and also used as an encore during their 1988–1989 tour supporting their album…And Justice for All. Present on the Live Shit: Binge & Purge box set is a live video version recorded from their Seattle concerts on August 29th and 30th, 1989, where it was performed in the second encore. It was also played frequently during Madly in Anger with the World Tour and World Magnetic Tour. A short clip of “Breadfan” plays at the beginning of the “Whiskey in the Jar” music video. They also covered “Crash Course in Brain Surgery” on the Garage Days Re-Revisited EP.
