Saint John cardiologist and ‘inspiring spirit’ dies suddenly
A prominent New Brunswick cardiologist has died, leaving a huge void in the system and community, colleagues say.
dr Sohrab Lutchmedial has dedicated more than 20 years to the New Brunswick Heart Center and the care of patients with heart disease, according to a statement from the New Brunswick Heart Center staff.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected death of a colleague, friend, father, partner and inspirational spirit,” the statement said.
Lutchmedial died in his sleep at his home in Saint John on Monday, said Jean-François Légaré, the chief of cardiac surgery at the New Brunswick Heart Centre. He was 52.
Légaré said family, friends and colleagues were shocked at the news of Lutchmedial’s death.
“It was sudden, unexpected for all of us. He was actually on call yesterday morning,” Légaré said in an interview.
“I think we’re all having a hard time grasping the magnitude of the loss… We spoke to him over the weekend about plans and things we would be doing over the next few weeks. few months for the heart center.
“That’s the kind of person he was. He was always thinking about those things.”
Lutchmedial helped perform Atlantic Canada’s first MitraClip procedure, a minimally invasive repair procedure that brings new hope to patients too ill to withstand open-heart surgery.
The New Brunswick Medical Society is “deeply saddened” to learn of Lutchmedial’s sudden death, said President Dr. Mark MacMillan in a statement.
“Dr. Lutchmedial was a valued member of the medical community in Saint John and throughout the province,” MacMillan said. “We extend our condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and patients.”

According to the Heart Center’s website, Lutchmedial earned his degree in biology from Queen’s University in 1993 and then his medical degree from McGill University.
Légaré said his studies at McGill overlapped with Lutchmedial, which was already well respected.
“He did more than medicine,” said Légaré. “[He] was an artist. He was a musician. He took part in filmmaking in the province. He was a hockey coach for his children. He participated in the community. He was an enthusiastic researcher.”
He said Lutchmedial was friendly and understanding, even when a man bumped into him in the pub one night looking for a fight. With just a few words, Lutchmedial was able to defuse the situation and calm the man down.
“That’s the kind of person who really had a very, very, very good soul and a person who was really able to bring people together and not be competitive,” Légaré said.

“That’s the kind of impact he had on the heart center. And I think he fostered that culture within our group that brings us all closer together and working together.”
Lutchmedial was the director of the center’s interventional cardiology program. He sat on the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Board and was the Atlantic representative to the Canadian Association of Interventional Cardiologists.
Légaré said Lutchmedial made New Brunswick his home and he raised three children here. He had just returned from visiting his daughter at the University of Ontario last weekend.
Légaré said he and his colleagues are trying to find a way to perpetuate his legacy and are considering becoming a lecturer or sponsoring someone in medicine or nursing.

After beating a few, I reached Sohrab, who I later learned woke up after a long night on call. Without asking me more than where and when he promised to come down and get me the tickets. What he didn’t know: To prevent ticket resale, your photo was taken at the point of sale and printed on the ticket, so he had to leave now. What I didn’t know was that he didn’t even know the band that well, but now he’s gone. We had a great time at a great show and to this day I have my ticket as a reminder of a great story but also as a testament to what a selfless person he was. Someone who would, without question, get out of bed and buy tickets to a show that they didn’t want to go to because of a friend but then had to and then went willingly and loving every moment. I will miss you my friend with your love too

As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Sohrab Lutchmedial that many people in their fifties and sixties need treatment after heart attacks. But there has been a shift in the past decade, so he and his colleagues are now seeing more and more people in their 30s and 40s.
“The combination of unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and genetic factors leads to a trend towards heart disease in younger people,” says Dr. Lutchmedial, Associate Professor in the Division of Cardiology at Horizon Health Network and Dalhousie Medical School Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick (DMNB). “We cannot wait until people are in their 30s to address their risk – by then it may be too late.”
dr Lutchmedial wants to know if working with teenagers in schools can help reduce the risk of heart disease for the next generation. He and his colleagues started a research project with tenth graders at two schools in the Saint John NB area to see it.
“We start with a basic assessment of blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body mass index,” says Dr. Lutchmedia. “We found that a significant number of children have risk factors for heart disease.” These students and their families receive health certificates recommending follow-up visits to their family doctor and invite them to participate in a six-month educational and physical activity program at school.
“If we can demonstrate improvements in students’ overall health and self-esteem, we will appeal to the New Brunswick government to implement a school-based heart risk reduction program across the province,” said Dr. Lutchmedia. “That’s how we believe we can have the greatest impact on the future.”
For patients in the here and now, Dr. Lutchmedial has been involved in numerous clinical trials and outcome studies. He also works with Dr. Ansar Hasan, Dr. Keith Brunt, Dr. Thomas Pulinilkunnil and Dr. Petra Kienesberger on studies to identify the molecular determinants of heart disease.
