Cameras “Kamie” Crawford (born October 25, 1992) is an American beauty pageant winner who was crowned Miss Teen USA 2010 on July 24, 2010 at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas. Crawford won the Miss Maryland Teen USA 2010 title on November 1, 2009 and attended her first pageant. Crawford trained for the Miss Maryland Teen USA pageant for 5 months and after talking to her friend decided to enter. “I decided to enter the Miss Maryland Teen USA pageant after a friend who had entered two years before me encouraged me to enter. She thought I would be successful and have fun. After winning the state election, the winner will represent the state in the national Miss Teen USA pageant,” she said.[4] She also won the Miss Photogenic Award. She was trained by LauRen Merola, Miss Pennsylvania USA 2008.[5]
On July 24, 2010, Crawford represented Maryland in the Miss Teen USA 2010 pageant, where she made history by being the first Maryland contestant to win the title. Crawford became the fourth African American woman to win the Miss Teen USA title, after Janel Bishop in 1991, Ashley Coleman in 1999, and Marissa Whitley in 2001, as well as the third Hispanic to win the title after Charlotte Lopez in 1993 and Hilary Cruz in 2007.

However, the mission of helping people confront their scammers remains the same. We caught up with the dynamic duo (yes, via Zoom) to talk about their latest fishing expeditions.
How did it make the transition back into the world?
Nev Schulman: You don’t always appreciate what you have until you don’t have it. I think we did 40+ episodes remotely which really made us miss not only each other and the dynamic we bring, but also the experience of travelling, seeing new places, at doors knocking and talking to people. It’s all part of the experience of the show. The process of returning was slower than I think we would have liked. Obviously there were some hiccups. The variants popped up, so we went back to the virtual. It wasn’t smooth, certainly not a straight line. But we are filming full in the world now. Some of these episodes I believe will air towards the end of the current season and into the future pending unforeseen developments at the CDC.
What have you learned from the experience of going virtual?
Kamie Crawford: Catfish is a big TV show on a big network, and we’re still having Zoom outages and issues. I feel like Zoom and Google Hangouts have become part of our normal lives. From our experience, creating a show that is so current that we can adapt to any environment we find ourselves in is just amazing. The ability to bring that to Zoom or through the computer was really interesting. It was really cool to be able to connect with people from all over the world so quickly in the episodes. Social media and the internet can be used for good and evil. We try to use it as best as possible.
What impact do you think COVID is having on catfishing?
Nev: Many people who previously didn’t need or want to consider online relationships or dating have been forced to because of the pandemic. I think many people who have full lives and social interaction have felt this isolation and loneliness that many people who have come onto our show have felt. As a result, I think they are tempted and in many cases actually engage in online relationships that they might not otherwise have had. We’re seeing this trend more often, of people who aren’t necessarily the type of person who thinks or expects to be in an online relationship, which I find interesting.
Is it harder than in the past to spot a catfish because people are so savvy on social media?
Kamie: I think just as they evolved, we needed to evolve as well. We are already finding new apps. We don’t just use Google image search anymore. We have another app we use that has better facial recognition software for finding people – at least debunk the photos they use for catfish. Once you follow these people, our life will be easier. However, as new apps come out, we start cross-referencing. We try to keep up as much as possible, but they can be difficult.
As we’ve seen in the first few episodes since you got back. Any stories that stand out to you?
Nev: We had a particular episode where a former catfish showed up as a hopeful. That’s an interesting twist that you’re not expecting. I look forward to people watching and getting their reactions. It’s a particularly colorful character that we’re helping.
You guys have such chemistry. What was it like getting to know each other and being a part of each other’s lives, especially during these strange times?
Kamie: You go first. I want to hear you say nice things about me.
Nev: The time that we know each other now has been an interesting time in the world and in our lives. It’s a pandemic. You knew me married with one child. Now I have three children. And a lot has happened to Kamie — not just with the show, but with her relationship status, who is now single. Just in case anyone needs to hear that.

Nev: Kamie, what I wanted to tell you is that I have a friend who is very successful and talented that I haven’t heard from in a while. He texted me the other day with just a picture of you. He said, “What’s your deal?” He wants to know more.

When Nev and Max [Joseph] did it, that’s what drew everyone to the show. Her dynamism, her bromance. It was great to see them collide. To get away from it, and people love Nev and [my] relationship. They love our banter. They love the fact that we’re really great at different things, but it works at the same time. It’s great to meet Laura [Perlongo] and the kids. He gets to know me and my family. It just feels very natural. I know it’s exciting for people to watch. Our lives are very closely connected.
What are your thoughts on the UK version of the show now airing Stateside?
Nev: We’ve had other international franchise spinoffs besides the UK one. I like the idea that they exist. I’m just upset that I’m not asked to host.
Kamie: For the second season of Catfish UK I had to go out and do an episode with Oobah [Butler]. They are all so different. I feel like we can be involved in all of them but there are so many catfish in the world. And I guess we can’t do it 24/7 as part of our lives.
Nev: There are obviously language barriers.
Kamie: And things we might not get. Even in the UK episode, they talked about different areas. I’m like, “Where’s this?” It’s cool to see that the show has such a wide reach. Call us at the same time. We would like to travel to South America.
