Howard Finkel

Professional wrestling ring announcer (1950–2020)

Howard Finkel (June 7, 1950 – April 16, 2020) was an American professional wrestling ring announcer best known for his appearances in WWE.[2] He began working for Vincent J. McMahon’s World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1975 and has been ring announcer at Madison Square Garden since 1977. Finkel was the longest-serving staff member in WWE (40 years) and was widely considered the greatest ring announcer of all time. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009.[3]

Early life and career[edit]

Finkel was born on June 7, 1950 in Newark, New Jersey and grew up in a Jewish family.[4][5]

Finkel (center) built his reputation by announcing games at Madison Square Garden

Finkel debuted as a ring announcer at Madison Square Garden on January 17, 1977. By 1979, he was the World Wide Wrestling Federation’s lead ring announcer for their biggest events. On April 1, 1980, he became WWE’s first employee and later its senior.[6] Throughout his career, his distinctive voice was sometimes used in the title sequence for the company’s various television programs. His trademark was his announcement of a new champion after a title change, emphasizing the word “new” to elicit the widest crowd reaction.[7] He came up with the event name “WrestleMania” as well as Ricky Steamboat’s “Dragon” nickname. In 1984, he became the WWF’s lead ring announcer for recorded television, replacing Joe McHugh.

In a 2011 interview, he said that his historical knowledge also played roles in the talent relations and creative departments in the early days of WWF.[8] On January 19, 1987, Finkel was presented with a plaque by Gene Okerlund commemorating the ten year announcement at Madison Square Garden. In 1993, he was introduced at the “Roman”-themed WrestleMania IX in a toga as Finkus Maximus. In 1995, Finkel took a seven-month hiatus from ring announcement on pay-per-views and television broadcasts (but not house shows) and was replaced by Manny Garcia. He returned to the full-time ring in 1996, announcing at the Royal Rumble.

Storylines [ edit ]

As an announcer, Finkel was generally separate from the scripted angles, but occasionally became part of the company’s storylines. In November 1990, Finkel played a minor role when Curt Hennig defeated Kerry Von Erich and won the WWF Intercontinental Championship after accepting a bribe from Ted DiBiase (whom Von Erich had recently attacked on The Brother Love Show) to make him a guest to let ring announcers take over for the game. DiBiase eventually helped Hennig win the title by beating Von Erich with the championship belt and then taunting Von Erich about his loss. In 1992, a feud began with manager Dr. Harvey Wippleman, who regularly complained about Finkel’s announcement. In 1992, Finkel was attacked by Wippleman’s wrestler Kamala. At WrestleMania X, Wippleman berated Finkel and ripped off part of the announcer’s tuxedo, who eventually retaliated by pinning the manager to the ground. This led to Finkel’s first match on January 9, 1995; On Monday Night Raw, he won a tuxedo match against Wippleman by stripping him down to his underwear.

Finkel became involved in a feud between X-Pac and Jeff Jarrett when Jarrett shaved Finkel’s head, which was already nearly bald. This feud culminated in a hair-to-hair match at SummerSlam 1998 with Finkel in X-Pac’s corner. X-Pac won the match and Finkel helped him cut Jarrett’s hair. In August 1999, Finkel became a lackey to recently debuting Chris Jericho. On August 26, during the network debut episode of WWF SmackDown, Jericho encouraged Finkel to attack SmackDown announcer Tony Chimel and reclaim his spot as main announcer. Finkel ran down the aisle, shoved Chimel and ordered him to step aside. As Finkel began to announce, Chimel threw Finkel out of the ring. While Jericho was helping Finkel backwards, they crossed Ken Shamrock who was jostling with Jericho. Jericho convinced Finkel to distract Shamrock during his fight.

After Finkel berated Shamrock, Shamrock began twisting Finkel’s fingers, allowing Jericho to hit Shamrock from behind with a steel chair. A few weeks later, Finkel took on the role of El Dopo, a masked referee who unfairly officiated a Shamrock match and awarded the win to Curtis Hughes. On the episode of SmackDown! on October 14, Jericho defeated Hughes with help from Finkel, but passed Finkel to Curtis Hughes after the match. Four days later on Monday Night Raw, Hughes bet against The Acolytes and lost Finkel in a poker game. Finkel turned around on an August 2002 episode of Raw and began a brief feud with Raw ring announcer Lilian Garcia for the lead spot before both were attacked by a 3-minute warning. The following week, Garcia defeated Finkel in an evening dress vs. tuxedo match with the help of Trish Stratus and Stacy Keibler, who were offended by a remark made by Finkel.

finch in 2014

By 2000, Howard Finkel had adopted a lighter schedule with the additions of Lilian Garcia and Tony Chimel to Raw and SmackDown, respectively, but he still announced some of WWF/E’s pay-per-view events. By 2006, Finkel was barely heard even at pay-per-view wrestling events. However, he regularly announced at house shows and introduced those inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame at WrestleMania. Finkel himself was recorded by Gene Okerlund on April 4, 2009. Because Finkel was one of this year’s recruits, SmackDown announcer Justin Roberts replaced him in introducing the group at WrestleMania XXV. Finkel’s television appearances were sporadic, on major pay-per-views and occasional episodes of Raw and SmackDown. Finkel appeared at every WrestleMania from 1985 to 2016.

Finkel in the ring in 2009

Finkel has done the intro voiceover for the WWE.com video show The Dirt Sheet and has also done interviews for various WWE.com programs. He was WWE’s chief statistician. On September 7, 2009, he announced The Price is Right-inspired segments on Special Guest Host Bob Barker’s. He was in the background of the Decade of SmackDown celebrations on the October 2 episode. Finkel returned to the ring and announced (for one night only) the November 15, 2010 “Old School” episode of Raw. He appeared on an episode of NXT in an “Outthink the Fink” challenge. In an interview on March 28, 2011, Finkel stated that his favorite (and career-defining) achievement was announcing WrestleMania III to over 93,000 fans. On November 20, 2011 at Survivor Series at Madison Square Garden, Finkel was the special ring announcer for CM Punk in his WWE Championship match against Alberto Del Rio.

On April 10, 2012, Finkel appeared on the SmackDown episode “Blast from the Past.” On July 23, 2012, Finkel was a special ring announcer in the 1,000. Episode of Raw. In 2014, Finkel was a cast member on the WWE Network’s original reality show, Legends’ House. He has also acted as an off-screen announcer for the network’s comedy series, The Edge and Christian Show. Finkel made regular appearances on the WWE web series The JBL and Cole Show until the show’s cancellation in June 2015. His role in announcing WWE Hall of Fame members at WrestleMania transitioned to other ring announcers in WWE beginning in 2017. On January 22, 2018, on the 25th anniversary of Monday Night Raw, Finkel was the announcer introducing The Undertaker, although it was a recording as he was unable to attend the event.

In the last years of his life, Finkel worked in a backstage role for WWE.[17] On June 14, 2020, the Backlash PPV featured a recording of Howard Finkel introducing both Edge and Randy Orton to “the greatest wrestling match ever” and introducing the pair of fighters.

death [edit]

Finkel died on April 16, 2020 at the age of 69.[3] He has been unwell since suffering a stroke in February 2019.[19] On the Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard podcast, Prichard mentioned that Finkel had lived in an assisted living facility for some time before his death.[20]
