Christopher John McCausland (born ca. 1977) is a British actor and comedian. He is known to television audiences for his role as Rudi on the CBeebies show Me Too! He is a regular performer at comedy venues across the UK including The Comedy Store. McCausland is blind due to retinitis pigmentosa.
Early life[edit]
McCausland was born c. Born 1977 in West Derby Village, Liverpool, but has lived in Surbiton, near Kingston upon Thames, since 1996, having moved there to study at Kingston University. He graduated in 2000 with a BSc Honors in Software Engineering. After a stint as a web developer, failing eyesight prompted a change of direction and he worked in sales for a number of years, during which time he made his stand-up comedy debut in 2003.[2]
Stand-up comedy[edit]
McCausland first tried stand-up in July 2003 at a new act comedy night in Balham. Within his first year as an actor he won the Jongleurs J2O Last Laugh competition, came second in the Laughing Horse New Act of The Year and placed third in Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny competition.
He took part in six stand-up shows at the Edinburgh Festival between 2005 and 2012 and was awarded the Creative Diversity Award for Comedy in 2011 by a Channel 4-led panel of broadcasters which also included BBC, ITV and Sky. He has performed all over the world, including Asia and the Middle East, and travels the UK regularly to play at the country’s top comedy clubs. He appeared on the BBC program Live at the Apollo on January 4th 2018 and most recently on January 7th 2022 he hosted the show. [3]

In 2014, McCausland hosted a national TV ad for Barclays promoting the benefits of their new talking ATMs. Also in 2014, he starred alongside Anna Crilly and Neil Fitzmaurice in the Jimmy McGovern drama series Moving On. In 2012, he appeared alongside fellow comedians in Jimmy Carr’s Comedians Special charity episode of Celebrity Deal or No Deal.
He appeared in three series of At The Comedy Store for Paramount Comedy in 2008 and for Comedy Central in 2010 and 2012. In 2011 he appeared in the ITV series Stand-up Hero. In 2010 he starred in BBC One’s year-end spoof news show Unwrapped with Miranda Hart. He was also one of the main characters in the CBeebies series Me Too! and played Rudi, the market trader. It was filmed in 2006 and aired on CBeebies and internationally until April 2016. [citation needed] On August 20, 2018, he appeared on the long-running BBC soap opera EastEnders.
On October 18, 2019 he appeared on the BBC comedy panel show Would I Lie to You.[4] Then, on 2 December 2019, he appeared in another BBC satirical comedy panel show, Have I Got News For You[5], with his appearance also appearing in the extended version of the Have I Got A Bit More News For You episode was shown. In February 2020, he appeared in an episode of 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown on Channel 4. Despite his poor eyesight, Chris kept high scores throughout the episode, playing alone by heart and even guessing the difficult ending of the game “Countdown Conundrum”. in front of the sighted panelists. “For me, the most challenging parts of life as a (gig/touring blind) comedian are all the logistical ones, traveling across the country to different venues and even getting to and from the stage at a show,” says Chris.
“Obviously I’ve found solutions to these aspects of the job over the years. Once those issues are overcome, the real part of the job on stage is the easy part.”
From stories about the marathon birth from hell that Chris and his wife thought would never end, and their experience of having to pay real money to a crazy lactation consultant (yes, that’s a real job), to the numerous and inevitable conflicts that arise when a pasty white Scouser is married to a hot-blooded Brazilian.
Chris also gives an insight into life and parenting in the dark, from his inevitable flaws as a husband who can’t do his share of driving, to the total farce of playing hide-and-seek when you can’t see where to hide or not once where should one look damn!
Q/ What do you think is the biggest challenge about being a father?
Chris McCausland: As my daughter has gotten older and more communicative, being a blind father has become easier in many ways. There was a really difficult time when she was a year old where she was agile but quiet, crawling around on the floor but barely making a damn peep!
In retrospect, maybe I should have put a bell or bluetooth tracker on her so I could ask Alexa to find her! Now that she’s five, it’s probably because she can’t properly help her with reading and writing. How many of the other kids in your class have better handwriting than their dad?
Q/ You are from the north and your wife is Brazilian – how does this cultural clash work?
Chris McCausland: As you can imagine, we are very different in our culture and in our biological response to temperature. While my wife still needs a winter coat in 22 degree sunshine, I struggle to function in anything warmer than around 26 degrees.
This of course leads to major conflicts when it comes to central heating. I talk about it on the show, but I think there’s a good chance one of us will one day be found dead in the hallway, one arm outstretched for the thermostat, while the other of us left the country.
Q/ What has been your career highlight so far?
Chris McCausland: My career highlight so far has definitely been filming Live at the Apollo for the BBC. Not only was it the greatest career opportunity I’ve ever had, it was also the biggest gig I’ve ever had, playing in front of 3,500 comedy fans at the Hammersmith Apollo.
Having lived in London for over twenty years I have seen many of my music and comedy heroes perform on this stage and it has truly been a dream come true to do the same.
Q/ What projects do you have in mind?
Chris McCausland: After this tour is over I plan to write a book about my own experiences of losing my sight, becoming a comedian and becoming a father.
They say everyone carries a book within them, and I guess I must have at least two. I also plan to become Prime Minister, destroy Facebook and start the most successful rock band in the world.

Chris McCausland has been performing his unique brand of observational humor on the UK live comedy scene since 2003. Stephen Portlock saw his last show during a performance at the Soho Theater in London.
At the end of Chris McCausland’s latest typically excellent offering, I was stunned by the comments of a sighted viewer. Why, I wondered, did this person want more about how Chris lost his sight. It’s akin to expecting a gay comedian to always talk about coming out before cracking a joke.
Also, one could argue that Chris actually granted this viewer’s wishes, at one point stating that he wasn’t always blind. He was a web designer, but then his eyesight got worse and the websites just got uglier. It’s typical Chris – taking material that could have encouraged pathos and creating hilarity instead.
After asking his wife how she met a boyfriend, he received a 35-minute response, and she didn’t finish her speech until they reached the front door. Chris remarked on being dealt a bad hand: “I have the wrong handicap. I should be deaf but able to see.”
Discussing his blindness this time, Chris remarked, “You get used to it, right, but there are things that are happening in the world around you that one day you realize you’ve been operating in a slightly different reality all other.”
Much of Chris’ hour-long set alluded to absurd misunderstandings. For example, not realizing that soccer player Mario Balotelli is black, fantasizing about Postman Pat’s son (voiced by a woman in her 20s), and hating Mr. Tumble’s condescending tone before discovering that it is aimed at deaf children. Some of the themes may seem a bit obvious, such as B. an opening discussion about his goofy guide dog, but Chris’ strength lies in taking such material and making it laugh out loud and merrily.
In fact, part of it lies in his mastery of digression. For example, the discussion of the aforementioned Balotelli led to contradictions in our language; How come racists are anti-racial but royalists are pro-royal?
There was also a whim as Chris wondered why we have flavored condoms but not flavored dental gloves. The overarching theme, however, was fatherhood and the awkwardness that comes from not being able to see. It meant he may have been mistaken for a pedophile after his wife scooted off after their young daughter left Chris alone in the middle of a busy playground.
“How am I supposed to know? You know more than either of us right now, darling!” thought Chris as his two-year-old daughter, who was sitting in the bathtub, pointed and asked, “What’s that?” before pouring a handful of wet ones dumping shit in his hands.
All of this might sound a bit too specific to the field of vision loss, but many sighted colleagues might sympathize with Chris’ frustration when his wife’s prenatal breasts became untouchable like museum exhibits. He had recently spoken about his wife’s labor – he brought in a sandwich that was expected to last several hours and stayed there for 41 hours – “Bullshit for my baby’s health. Look at the state of my damn lettuce!”
The intriguingly titled “Jesus Was Married And Look How It Turned Out For Him” grew out of a discussion of religion, God and Heaven – potentially silly targets, but again, amusingly handled. In fact, my only gripe with the show was a brief anecdote about a friend of his from the past who was afraid to use the office restrooms.
Chris didn’t imply that his friend had any particular mental illness, and the anecdote was I’ll admit it was funny, but I felt a little queasy afterwards. Overall though, Chris is only going from strength to strength and I look forward to seeing him perform again.
