HGTV’s Clint Robertson Builds an Empire

Sporting battered cowboy boots, a plaid dad shirt from a closet full of boots, and a grin of effortless wit, Clint Robertson ’92 became one half of HGTV’s newest power duo with the hit series Boise Boys.

Your role will expand. Outgrown With the Boise Boys premieres in June, solving space issues for families who need more space.

An impressive work ethic alongside a diverse professional background helped Robertson succeed in the real estate space. But as a CPA, licensed attorney, mediator, contractor, broker, developer and mentor, Robertson, who graduated at the top of his accounting class, defies pigeonholes.

“Clint’s career path isn’t exactly what I expected, but he’s always been very driven and ambitious,” said Professor Emeritus Robert Vigeland, former chair of TCU’s accounting department.

“He excelled from the start,” he said. “It’s amazing what he’s made of his life.”

cowtown kid

Robertson’s roots run deep in Fort Worth. His grandfather was a barber in the River Oaks area. His mother and father, a standout pitcher who played for the University of Texas at Austin, moved to Fort Worth when he was 3 years old.

The couple’s firstborn son excelled in almost everything he pursued. A born athlete and gifted singer, Robertson finished first in his class at Castleberry High School and received a full academic scholarship to TCU.

“There’s something about TCU and something about Fort Worth in general,” Robertson said. “Even though I’m grown and gone, the TCU area still says home.”

He entered college as a prospective doctor, only to be uncomfortable with a possible 12-year apprenticeship. But he had developed a bug for the business working with his CPA father and helping out at Dairy Queens and other fast food restaurants that Joe Robertson bought to fix and flip.

The younger Robertson’s business ambitions were cemented around the time he met Sandy Hill in a tax accounting class at TCU.

“He blew my mind and changed my whole plan,” said Sandy Robertson, recalling her 29-year-old husband popping the question outside Sadler Hall as they lay on the lawn watching the stars.

The big picture

The couple married in 1992 shortly after he took a job at Ernst & Young, but the marriage proved far more satisfying than his work life.

“I learned very quickly over one tax season that me and this booth were headed for a rocky divorce,” Robertson said. “I’m not a little person and not a small picture person.”

In 1993 he enrolled in law school at Southern Methodist University, which was then focusing on business law. Even as a freshman, he thought beyond a legal career and dreamed of all the businesses he wanted to start, he said.

During his senior year of law school, he and his wife traveled frequently between Dallas and Wichita Falls, Texas, where his father had relocated his place of business. After a botched operation, the elder Robertson had a tough time overseeing his Dairy Queens.

Robertson graduated and the young couple, now parents to Jake and Eli with Daniel on the way, returned to Fort Worth. There he worked for the Jackson Walker law firm, and Sandy Robertson continued to help her father-in-law with his payroll processing.

trouble and tragedy

But something was wrong with the gregarious, successful entrepreneur, a larger-than-life man whom Robertson considered his best friend. He “shrunk to skin and bones,” Robertson said, as his health struggles overwhelmed him.

One day in 1999, Joe Robertson took his own life.

“I’ve lost my safety net, my compass. I lost everything,” Robertson said. “Daddy was my god with a little ‘g’.”

Robertson said he felt the shock, pain and tragedy of his father’s death. In addition, when he first looked fully into his father’s books, he saw the companies’ dire financial situation.

It was also at this low point in his life that Robertson discovered that his teetotal Baptist father had become addicted to prescription painkillers during his long post-surgery hospital stay.

Robertson sold all of the assets he and his wife owned and funneled the money into his father’s failing restaurants to bail them out. It wasn’t enough.

At 29, he had no money and no family to take care of, including his now-widowed mother.

“I always thought I could control everything until I lost my father,” he recalls. “That’s when I realized I had a father greater than my earthly father.”

reconstruction

In 2000, while he was deep in grief, a family connection offered him a job on American Country Countdown, a popular radio show relocated from Hollywood to nearby Weatherford, Texas. Robertson led the program’s operations for seven years while making his foray into the booming local real estate market.

He set up a title office outside of Weatherford, hired a few turnkeys, and capitalized on investors from California, New York, and Florida buying multi-family homes in Dallas-Fort Worth.

The business thrived until 2008, when Robertson said he had an epiphany that he wasn’t spending enough time with his sons. He divested himself of real estate just months before the market collapsed. He also recognized that he was “never cut out of the blue to be someone who sits behind a desk all the time or practices law.”

The boys were 12, 10, and 8 years old when the family moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, attracted by the mountains. The couple planned to take a year-long sabbatical from paid work while homeschooling the children. Robertson volunteered as an addiction minister, working one-on-one with men struggling with drugs and alcohol.

Donald Trump interrupted all of that. A day after seeing a call for candidates on NBC’s The Apprentice, Robertson boarded a plane to Las Vegas and stood in line overnight to interview for the reality show. A month later he was on his way to New York City to film Season 10.

For more than two months, Robertson worked from 4 a.m. to midnight. He won the final task but narrowly missed out on the show’s coveted grand prize. “Apparently her excuse was that I said ‘her’ too much,” Robertson joked.

Back in Idaho, he bought a pawn shop and turned it into a regional powerhouse for buying gold and also hung up a clapboard to practice law. When Jake received a full scholarship to Boise State University, the family bought a condo in the state capital.

Robertson’s opportunity sonar began to ping.

Flip for Boise

Boise, Robertson said, is “in the perfect Goldilocks zone” with cheap housing that could be flipped for a significant profit.

Not long after that revelation, he met Luke Caldwell, who had started renovating houses and was saving part of the income to adopt another child from overseas. When Caldwell, a Christian musician, was on tour, Robertson helped out with his projects. They made a six-figure profit on their first project together.

Their design-build company Timber and Love was born.

Shortly after, a production company suggested the unlikely duo to HGTV, which they dubbed the Boise Boys. Her Odd Couple vibe won over the network and viewers alike.

“I’m your Texas boot-wearing, rough and ready build guy, and Luke is the skinny-jeans man-purse designer,” Robertson said.

“What’s amazing about Clint is that he has a very big personality that’s fun and engaging. But unlike a lot of people with big personalities, he can back everything up because he’s really knowledgeable,” said Grant Julian, who produced season two of Boise Boys.

Robertson and Caldwell spend more than five months renovating homes from the ground up. Robertson handles construction while Caldwell focuses on design; both deal with the business side, with Robertson bringing his CPA and legal experience to the fore. It’s the first time in his career that Robertson has had a partner.

In last season’s Boise Boys, the couple renovated 13 houses in about 10 months, Caldwell said.

“We were billed as the dads of HGTV, and I love that,” said Caldwell, a father of eight children, five of whom were adopted. “My family is my greatest treasure, and it’s important to know that the person standing next to you feels the same way.”

Sandy Robertson and the three boys — two in medical school and the youngest who plans to join them after graduating from Boise State — make frequent appearances on the show.

“What you see on camera is the real Clint. He treats people very well.”

Grant Julian, Producer

Clint Robertson, who got into construction as a teenager and helped out at his father’s Dairy Queens, seems to be in his element as he strategizes home improvements and finds innovative ways to control costs.

“He’s never surprised by anything, he always sees the trouble coming,” Julian said. “And what you see on camera is the real Clint. He treats people very well.”

heart for home

The Robertsons’ newest venture, Wichita Falls-based Heart for Home Properties, aims to expand homeownership opportunities. The couple is spending time between Idaho and Texas while renovating affordable homes in the Lone Star State.

They plan to pay the mortgage on the rehabilitated homes for two years until prospective homeowners qualify for bank financing. Along the way, the Robertsons said they aim to mentor buyers on everything from personal finance to parenting, a passion project rooted in a love of home and family.

“Clint’s vision has always been to help people,” said Sandy Robertson. “He’s a very successful entrepreneur, but he has a huge heart.”

‘Boise Boys’ Stars Clint Robertson and Luke Caldwell Have 11 Kids Between Them

The two renovate homes in the greater Boise area: Clint does the contract work while Luke chooses the designs. Both have also performed at Flipping Across America. When not collaborating or filming the show, both Luke and Clint have busy personal lives. The two have 11 children together.
