Chris Licht replacing Jeff Zucker as CNN chief A journalist at heart

Chris Licht will take over as head of CNN in the spring, Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed on Monday. Licht, executive vice president of special programming at Paramount and executive producer and showrunner of The Late Show, bid farewell to Stephen Colbert on Monday night.

“I didn’t know if I would like him, but six years later I love you,” Colbert said, turning to Licht, who was standing directly backstage. “I don’t love you for what you’ve done for us, because it will stay that way. I love you for the man you are, the loving, thoughtful and loving father and husband to your family and dear friend to me for the rest of my life.”

Licht, who was named executive producer of “Late Show” in 2016, returns to the news. Before working with Colbert, Licht ran CBS This Morning and helped develop MSNBC’s Morning Joe with host Joe Scarborough.

Licht wrote in a memo to CNN staffers that he was “a journalist at heart. While I enjoyed every minute on The Late Show, I’m joining CNN because I feel a real urge to get back to the news at such a critical moment in history.”

Zaslav said Licht is likely to replace Jeff Zucker in May, when Discovery’s acquisition of Warner Media, CNN’s parent company, is expected to close.

Earlier this month, Zucker resigned amid allegations that he violated network policy by failing to disclose a “consensual relationship” with a colleague.

In a memo, Zucker said the relationship came to light during the network’s investigation into former host Chris Cuomo, who was arrested in December for his role in helping his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, formulate his Defense fired amid sexual harassment scandal.

“I was asked about a consensual relationship with my closest colleague, someone I’ve worked with for more than 20 years,” Zucker said in the memo. “I have acknowledged that the relationship has evolved over the past few years. I had to disclose it when it started, but I didn’t. I was wrong.”

Weeks after Zucker’s resignation, CNN’s chief marketing officer Allison Gollust resigned after it was widely reported that she was the colleague with whom Zucker was involved.

WarnerMedia said in a statement to CBS News that a third-party investigation found that Zucker, Gollust and former Cuomo Prime Time host Chris Cuomo violated company policies, including CNN’s news standards and practices. The company did not specify which policies the former employees violated.

In a statement, Gollust accused WarnerMedia of retaliation, saying the company’s statement of her resignation was an attempt to “change the media narrative following her disastrous handling of the past two weeks.”

“It is deeply disappointing that after spending the past nine years defending and upholding CNN’s highest standards of journalistic integrity, I will be treated this way when I leave,” she said in a statement to CBS News. “But I do this with my head held high because I know I put my heart and soul into working with the best journalists in the world.”

Chris Licht, named new head of CNN, is expected to restore hard-news sensibility

Chris Licht, a CBS exec turned head of CNN, hopes to steer the network back to its hard news roots and away from the wayward tone that flourished on cable news during the Trump era, according to people who spoke to the experienced producer. WP Get the full experience. Choose Your Plan ArrowRight At a time when the nation’s Chief Executive was declaring the media “enemy of the state,” many CNN anchors and reporters felt empowered to speak their minds. But Licht doesn’t think the heated rhetoric that follows always serves the audience, these people said, speaking on condition of anonymity to have private conversations.

“There’s a difference between standing up for yourself,” Licht recently told a friend, “and becoming part of the resistance.”

Licht, 50, was announced Monday as the new chairman and chief executive of CNN Global, a role he is expected to assume in early May after a deal was struck for television conglomerate Discovery Inc. to take control of CNN’s parent company , WarnerMedia.

He will replace Jeff Zucker, who abruptly resigned from CNN on February 2 after failing to disclose a romantic relationship with longtime colleague Allison Gollust. She later resigned under pressure.

Before joining CBS, Licht excelled at MSNBC, where he was a co-creator and original executive producer on “Morning Joe,” the network’s flagship morning show. He also helped launch the CBS morning show, now called “CBS Mornings,” and more recently is credited with turning around the ratings performance of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which he currently oversees.

Licht has been friends for 15 years with his new boss, David Zaslav, who will serve as chief executive of the combined Warner Bros. Discovery; the two briefly overlapped at NBCUniversal before Zaslav became Discovery’s CEO in 2007. Licht frequently turned to Zaslav for career advice, friends say — and Zaslav, in turn, sought Licht’s advice as he prepared for the challenges of running a major news network after a career in entertainment.

In a statement, Zaslav described Licht as “a real news person” who “makes any organization stronger, more innovative and more cohesive.”

In his own statement, Licht praised CNN’s journalistic reputation and said he was “honored to have this opportunity, especially at such an important time for our country and the world.”

Licht’s appointment was widely praised by CNN journalists after plans for Saturday’s election were leaked and first reported by Puck.

“He’s definitely the right man for the job,” said Jay Sures, co-president of talent agency UTA, which represents many of CNN’s top anchors and correspondents. “People will want to follow his direction because he has real news.”

Jonathan Klein, who was President of CNN U.S. before Zucker hailed Licht as an innovator, bringing “Morning Joe” with “intelligent substance that proved audience-engaging” instead of the cooking segments and blurred celebrity features that were hallmarks of morning television. Licht cheered co-host Mika Brzezinski in 2007 when she dramatically fed a news script into a paper shredder instead of reading the audience the latest developments on Paris Hilton’s legal troubles — and helped set the tone for the show early in its run.

“He didn’t help,” Klein said. “He elevated every program he touched.”

Klein noted that some of the programs he created at CNN 15 years ago “are still pretty much what they always were” and that it’s “time for some new approaches that Chris will bring.”

Prior to Licht’s appointment, CNN staff and observers looked to Zaslav’s appointment of a new president for clues as to what editorial direction the network should take — particularly after Discovery shareholder John Malone said in a November interview that he “would like to see CNN moving forward would see back to the journalism that started it.”

Over the past decade, CNN’s once eagerly neutral tone has given way to something more idiosyncratic and emotional, as Zucker gave the best on-air talent leeway to speak their minds — a development that has unsettled some news traditionalists, said Mark Whitaker, a former CNN executive director and editor of Newsweek magazine.

Whitaker noted that Licht showed a knack for rebranding on the CBS morning show, where he signaled a renewed commitment to serious news.

“He ended up creating an interesting show, but it was very much in line with what CBS stood for,” he said. “If he comes into CNN and that’s his approach, that would be the right approach.”

In a memo to CNN staffers Monday morning, Zaslav described himself as a “news junkie at heart” and praised the channel’s coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, saying they had fulfilled their founder Ted Turner’s original mission by building it “the world’s leading news gathering organization.”

In his memo to CNN staff, Licht said he knew many were wondering how CNN would change. “The honest answer is I don’t know yet,” he wrote. Zaslav, he said, wants him to “ensure that CNN remains the world leader in news” and that they “double down on what’s working well and quickly eliminate what’s not working.”

Since Zucker’s abrupt departure, CNN has been run by a trio of longtime executives, Michael Bass, Amy Entelis and Ken Jautz. Each executive was viewed as a potential candidate for the role of President, although Zaslav ultimately chose an external choice.

CNN, which briefly was the most-watched network on cable news in January 2021 during a tumultuous presidential change, has slipped to third place when looking at total average viewership. In the 25-54 age bracket estimated by advertisers, it still surpasses MSNBC in terms of total daily viewers.

But colleagues say when Licht expressed concerns about taking a job that would throw him into a grueling ratings war, Zaslav reassured him that he was more interested in boosting CNN’s reputation – something that could be crucial given that CNN is launching a streaming service that will rely more on viewership subscriptions than ad revenue.

CNN Plus, as the streaming service is known, is expected to launch in late March with shows built around several high-profile new hires, including former Fox News host Chris Wallace and former NPR “All Things Considered” co-host Audie Kasie Hunt from Cornwall and former MSNBC presenter.

One of the first big challenges of light will be to fill the 9 p.m. Space vacated by former star presenter Chris Cuomo, who was fired from the network in December for crossing ethical lines to help his brother, then-New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, fight allegations about to help sexual misconduct.

While Cuomo was often emotional and opinionated, Licht told People he appreciated that the show was steeped in passion and unpredictability — and didn’t seem to adhere to any particular political perspective.

“It’s a big decision and it’s going to say a lot,” said Josh Gropper, a television agent who previously worked in programming and content strategy at CNN.

Now that the transaction is complete, Chris Licht will officially become CNN Global Chairman and CEO. Licht was appointed CNN’s new boss by Zaslav in February after Jeff Zucker left earlier this year, and he will report directly to Zaslav.

Licht will head all of CNN, including CNN+, which WarnerMedia launched last month. CNN has plans to eventually offer a lower-priced version of CNN+ that will be ad-supported — and it will also be available with HBO Max, but no word on how Discovery+ feeds into those plans.

The WarnerMedia Discovery transaction is the first major media merger since Viacom and CBS reunited in December 2019.
