Cody Jesus (Navajo) Finishes 2nd at the PBR Unleash The Beast – Las Vegas Invitational – NDNSPORTS

BY: MANDI MCCARY

LAS VEGAS — In the PBR’s first visit to the MGM Grand Garden Arena since 1998, second place went to 2016 Indian National Finals Rodeo (INFR) Champion Cody Jesus (Window Rock, Arizona) for his 2-on-3 Weekend who emerged as a cowboy in epic fashion on Saturday.

After an impressive win in Round 1 on Friday night, Jesus entered the championship on Saturday as the overall leader.

Round 2 wasn’t so lucky for the talented 22-year-old. His matchup with Theodore (Lari Crane/Gene Owen) ended in just 5.76 seconds; The bull then stepped on him, leaving him with a sprained left cruciate ligament and a bruised knee.

In visible pain, the Navajo cowboy was helped onto his back, but he was determined to ride in the championship round.

Jesus chose Bentley (Viducic Bucking Bulls) as his bull in the championship round. Grimacing in pain as he climbed aboard his cattle opponent, he jumped out of the chutes, hit the 8 and brought a standing ovation. His 92.5-point ride score, the highest of the weekend and the best of his career, sent fans into deafening madness.

Jesus’ outstanding weekend earned him 107 World Points and $20,298.49. He started the weekend at No. 42 in the world and has now started at No. 24.

Cody Jesus rides 6-of-8 bulls at PBR World Finals

WINDOW ROCK

Behind a second place overall at the 2022 PBR World Finals, bull rider Cody Jesus of Sawmill, Arizona, jumped to world No. 7.

Jesus rode 6 of 8 bulls for 530 points and finished 9.75 points behind World Champion Daylon Swearingen.

The New York bull rider rode six bulls for 539.75 points to win the average title at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Attempts to reach Jesus were unsuccessful.

At the World Finals, Jesus earned a whopping $170,500 and accumulated 540 points in the season’s standing points, finishing the year with 772.66 after making the World Finals in 26th place.

Ahead of the World Finals, 23-year-old Diné rode 2 of 3 bulls for the average title at the 2022 Pendleton Whiskey Velocity Tour Finals when he raised $29,250 on May 6 at the American Bank Center Corpus Christi, Texas.

In an interview with PBR, Jesus admitted that he’s come up short in several events because he was overly excited about spurring his draws too much.

“It took me a while to learn that patience,” Jesus said after his 89-point ride on La Grande in Round 3 on May 15. “I know I can cheer any bull but they have cost me so many times. I’m driving now.”

Earlier this week, the Carolina Cowboys drafted Jesus as their first pick for the first PBR Team Series Draft.

Jesus was later traded along with Joao Ricardo Vieira to the Texas Rattlers, who sent Swearingen, the PBR World Champion, and Mason Taylor to the Cowboys.

The new league begins competitions in July, with eight founding teams selecting five bull riders for their roster. The other six teams include the Austin Gamblers, Arizona Ridge Riders, Kansas City Outlaws, Missouri Thunder, Nashville Stampede and Oklahoma Freedoms.
