Collin Gillespie

American basketball player

Collin Gillespie (born June 25, 1999) is an American professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was named Big East Assistant Player of the Year in 2021 and won it outright the following year.

Early life and high school career[edit]

Gillespie is the son of a police officer. He attended Archbishop Wood Catholic High School, where he was tutored by John Mosco. Gillespie had no Division I scholarship offers his senior year, but did receive offers from Rider, Hofstra and Villanova after strong plays in a tournament. He scored 42 points in a regular season win over Neumann Goretti with Kentucky recruit Quade Green. As a senior, he led the team to a PIAA Class 5A state title in 2017.[3] Gillespie averaged 24.1 points per game as a senior and was named Philadelphia Player of the Year and Catholic League Most Valuable Player by the Philadelphia Daily News. He signed a memorandum of understanding with Villanova on April 14, 2017, joining Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree and Jermaine Samuels in the Class of 2021.

College career[edit]

Gillespie in 2018

Gillespie enrolled at Villanova in the fall of 2017 and wanted to do a redshirt in his freshman year at the school, but coach Jay Wright decided against it because Gillespie “played above his years.” [3] Gillespie soon broke into the rotation and scored double digits in his second collegiate game, but he also had to learn to adapt to the pace of the collegiate game. Gillespie was out for more than a month in December and January with a broken bone in his left hand sustained in a December 10 training session. However, he returned to action in an away win against Georgetown on 17 January. He put up good minutes and had eight points, including two threes in a February 1 win against Creighton in the absence of Phil Booth with a similar hand injury.[1] Gillespie made his first start on February 10 in an 86-75 win over Butler. In the first round of the NCAA tournament, Gillespie scored nine points and had a steal in a win over Radford. He had four points and five rebounds in the 79-62 NCAA championship game win over Michigan. He averaged 4.3 points per game in 14.4 minutes per game.[5] Gillespie had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.6-to-1, which Wright attributed to thinking about his teammates and trying to make them better.[3]

Gillespie hit a season-high 30 points in a 77–65 win over Georgetown on February 3, 2019. On March 9, he had 22 points in a 79-75 loss to Seton Hall. As a sophomore, Gillespie averaged 10.9 points per game.

Early in his junior season, Gillespie broke his nose in training, forcing him to wear a mask for several games.[9] Gillespie had 27 points and six assists in an 87-78 loss to Baylor in the Myrtle Beach Classic championship game. On November 25, he was named to the All-Tournament Team and Big East Player of the Week.[10] On January 28, 2020, Gillespie had his first double-double with 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in a 79-59 win over St. John’s. Gillespie had a season-high 29 points in a 76-56 win over Temple on February 16. At the end of the regular season, Gillespie was selected to the second-team All-Big East. He averaged 15.1 points, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game on a team that finished 24-7.

Early in his senior season, Gillespie was named to the Bob Cousy Award watchlist as well as to the Preseason First Team All-Big East. He tore his MCL in a 72-60 win over Creighton on March 3, 2021, ending his season. At the end of the regular season, Gillespie was named Big East Assistant Player of the Year by Seton Hall along with teammate Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Sandro Mamukelashvili. He averaged 14 points and 4.6 assists per game. Gillespie decided to take advantage of the additional playing time granted by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[19]

On February 15, 2022, Gillespie had a career-high 33 points despite playing on a swollen ankle in an 89–84 win at Providence.

National team career[ edit ]

In the summer of 2019, Gillespie was part of the United States national team that took part in the Pan American Games in Peru. The team won bronze, defeating the Dominican Republic behind 25 points from Gillespie.

Villanova’s Collin Gillespie signs with Denver Nuggets, leads list of locals to sign as NBA free agents

Collin Gillespie drives past Kansas’ Jalen Wilson during Villanova’s Final Four loss to the Jayhawks. Continue reading

Collin Gillespie’s interesting basketball path continues. The guard, who started his Villanova career after the fact but turned out to be a star, wasn’t drafted into the NBA Thursday night or early Friday morning, but he could be happy about that.

Gillespie has agreed to a two-way free-agent deal with the Denver Nuggets, who didn’t have a second-round draft pick but had an offer ready if Gillespie wasn’t picked.

The two-way deal means Gillespie, an Archbishop Wood High graduate, will receive an NBA salary while he’s on the NBA roster, but a reduced G-League salary while playing in the G-League . It’s a common developmental path in professional basketball.

Gillespie led Villanova to the Final Four as a fifth-year player, booking a career that began with Villanova winning the NCAA title in 2018 when Gillespie was a freshman and winning the 2022 Bob Cousy Award for the nation’s top senior point guard.

Other locals who signed as undrafted free agents

Gillespie wasn’t the only player with local connections to sign after the draft.

His teammate and former roommate at Villanova, Jermaine Samuels, is signing a free-agent deal with the Indiana Pacers, according to a report by CBS. Meanwhile, St. Joseph forward Jordan Hall is signing with the San Antonio Spurs, according to sources. Former Iowa State Archbishop Ryan Guard Izaiah Brockington has agreed to a deal with the New Orleans Pelicans, his agency Tandem Sports told The Inquirer. Overtime elite prospect Dominick Barlow, who played a season as freshman basketball at St Joseph’s Prep, has agreed to join the Spurs on a two-way contract.

Samuels, a Massachusetts native, is leaving Villanova after a storied five-year career highlighted by the 2018 NCAA championship. The forward is one of 11 Wildcats to have more than 1,200 points and 750 rebounds in his career. Samuels averaged 11.1 points and 6.5 rebounds last season and was named the South Regional’s most outstanding player as Villanova reached the Final Four.

Hall declared for the draft on March 18, giving up the remaining two years of his college eligibility. Heading into Thursday night, he was considered a fringe selection for the second round.

The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 14.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game and shot 39% from the field and 36% from three-point range. He is known for his ground vision, creates space for teammates and is a confident shooter. He led the Hawks in scoring and ranked 11th in assists per game last season. A Wildwood native, he previously attended Neumann Goretti, where he was an All-Catholic and All-State selection and led the Saints to the Catholic League Championship as a senior.

“Our entire program is more than excited for Jordan. He has long dreamed of this moment and we are blessed to have been able to minister to him as he pursued his basketball aspirations here at Hawk Hill,” St. Joe coach Billy Lange said in a statement.

“Jordan made the most of his opportunity here as our program had a big roster change. He has grown as a person in many ways. I respect his passion for the game as he has often competed through injury. I am moved by his loyalty and gratitude to The Story of Saint Joseph’s Basketball. The next leg of his basketball journey will bring great challenges and moments…Jordan will carry the spirit of The Hawk Will Never Die with him!”

Brockington, who was an All-Big 12 selection in his only season at Iowa State, previously had stints at St. Bonaventure and Penn State. As a senior, he led the Cyclones in scoring (16.9 points) and rebound (6.8) and was named the conference’s Newcomer of the Year. At Ryan, Brockington became the school’s third 1,000-point scorer and led the Raiders to two Catholic League semifinals.

Barlow chose not to play at the collegiate level. He signed a professional contract with Overtime Elite and turned down offers from Power 5 schools, including Rutgers. The 6-foot-9 short forward averaged 14.8 points and 5.9 rebounds with Overtime Elite last season. After transferring from St. Joe’s Prep, he graduated from Dumont (N.J.) High School, where he averaged 27.6 points, 17.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists. Barlow was named North Jersey Boys Basketball Player of the Year for 2020-21.

Former Villanova winger Cole Swider, who played at Syracuse last season, signed a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.
