Connie Kalitta

American drag racer and airline owner

Kalitta Motorsport’s Top Fuel Dragster (2007)

Conrad “Connie” Kalitta (born February 24, 1938) is an American businessman and former drag racer, nicknamed “The Bounty Hunter”. Kalitta is CEO of Kalitta Air and owner of Kalitta Motorsports.[1]

Kalitta was born in Michigan, grew up in Mount Clemens and graduated from Mount Clemens High School in 1957.

He raced from the 1950s through the 1990s. He was the first driver to reach 200 mph in an NHRA sanctioned event.[2]

Kalitta teamed up with Shirley Muldowney as Bounty Hunter and Bounty Huntress in two Ford Mustangs, her a Buttera chassis, his a Logghe.[3]

Kalitta finished second at the 1963 Winter Nationals in Top Gas and at the 1965 Spring Nationals in Top Fuel. His first major event win was the 1967 American Hot Rod Association (AHRA) Winter Nationals in Scottsdale, Arizona, in a 427cc “cammer”-powered top fuel dragster.[4]

Kalitta eventually won a total of 10 NHRA national events, including the 1994 Gatornationals and the U.S. Nationals – his last title.

Kalitta was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1992.[5] On the National Hot Rod Association’s list of the Top 50 Riders for the 50th Anniversary, 1951-2000, Kalitta was ranked number 21. [6]

Kalitta was played by Beau Bridges in a leading role in the Muldowney biopic Heart Like a Wheel (1983).

He is the father of race car driver Scott Kalitta, who died in a drag racing accident in Old Bridge Township, New Jersey in 2008.[7] He is the uncle of racing driver Doug Kalitta.

On November 14, 2016, Kalitta was honored with the NHRA’s first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award at the season-ending Mello Yello Award Ceremony.[2]

Connie Kalitta’s Airline Empire Is Bigger Than You Think

Conrad “Connie” Kalitta has built an impressive racing operation over more than half a century in the sport of drag racing, at times fielding a handful of professional nitro teams and accumulating a long list of achievements including multiple NHRA World Championships. And while even the most casual fanatic knows about Kalitta’s main business — air charters — if you’re anything like that journalist, you’re not really aware of just how much larger Kalitta’s flying empire is than its drag-racing endeavors. In a word, it’s HUGE.

Kalitta founded Kalitta Air in the early 1960s when he used his racing winnings from one of his early seasons behind the controls to purchase a single aircraft. This investment in a single aircraft has grown into one of the most successful charter flights in the world. But Kalitta Air doesn’t just fly them – and this is where the astounding scope of its operations shows.

Kalitta Air operates more than 35 aircraft, including a fleet of around 30 giant Boeing 747s and a few smaller 767s and 777s. Its planes are chartered to haul cargo around the world, and like any company, money is only made when the wheels are turning (or in the air, in this case). And Connie Kalitta waits for no one. As a result, Kalitta Air employs more than 900 people who machine, design and build virtually every component of a Boeing aircraft in-house, eliminating the dependency on external parties for repairs, maintenance and upgrades for their purposes. From the landing gear to the complete engine, Kalitta manufactures everything but the bones and skin of the aircraft, making it one of the most capable airline manufacturing and service operations on the planet. It even has dyno test facilities for the 90,000 horsepower jet engines that power a 747…big stuff. This is a nitro steroid machine shop, and if you have even a passing interest in mechanical things of incredible magnitude, this 45 minute tour of Kalitta’s plant by Titan Gilroy is a very well spent film.
