Billboard also reports that it took the filmmaking couple more than 20 years to complete the document, thanks to the filmmakers’ surgical precision in documenting almost every aspect of the “808s and Heartbreak” rapper’s life.
And while a source familiar with the production told Entertainment Tonight that the acquisition number was inaccurate, it’s clear that “jeen-yuhs” describes aspects of West’s life that were previously inaccessible to his fan base and the general public.

The result is jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, a three-part documentary chronicling West’s meteoric rise and recent fall from grace. Coodie, an aspiring comedian and host of legendary Chicago public-view show Channel Zero, is a longtime friend of West’s who saw the budding rapper’s potential early on and set about documenting the making of his debut album, The College Dropout. Coodie’s tapes are an important part of the documentary, which he co-directed with longtime collaborator Chike Ozah. JACKSON WALD: Was there anything in the documentary that was left on the cutting room floor that you wished could have gone in?
CHIKE OZAH: There was a moment, an altercation between Kanye and this other artist, when Kanye almost ripped his head bust open. Coodie filmed it – or thought he filmed it – but in reality he pushed the wrong button on the camera, so all you can hear is everything that’s going on. It’s so funny because we tried to edit it into act one, then we tried to put it into act two and it just didn’t work. It was a clip that could stand on its own and would definitely go viral. But it didn’t work with our storyline. So we just came to the conclusion that God didn’t want that clip to come out, for whatever reason. I thought it would be a strong clip because it’s not all peachy and clean. There will always be roadblocks.
WALD: Can you describe who was involved in the argument or where it started?
COODIE SIMMONS: It was when Kanye sold the song “Never Change” to Jay Z. Mind you, Kanye originally sold the track to this guy Payroll, who’s in the movie while he was in Chicago. Then Kanye played it for Jay and Jay was like, “I love that. I want that track.” He loved the hook, so he let Kanye rap the tower, but it really was Payroll’s hook. Kanye took care of Payroll, but eventually Payroll realized how big [the song] really was and he wanted more. They ended up trying to mug Kanye. Back when we were doing Channel Zero, we filmed Payroll talking about the incident. It’s a full arc. But like Chike said, I’m glad he didn’t make it because so many positives came out of this film. They sure got Kanye out, but it was a huge fight. It was at a memorial to E2 – a tragedy that happened at a Chicago club where 21 people were trampled and died. They had a memorial in Chicago for the families and Kanye wanted to go out and perform for them. That was before he was even blown up, and that’s when she and Payroll were trying to get to Kanye. At the monument.
WALD: I’m curious about Donda’s role in the documentary. Tell me a little bit about how you shaped the film around her. Donda’s influence seems to be the biggest factor in what made Kanye Kanye.
CHIKE: It was important for us to share moments to help viewers understand how far their love stretched — beyond their own son, to whom they gave their all. She had such a huge impact, not only on Kanye’s life but on Coodie’s life as well. It was important for us to introduce her to the story and how Coodie met her, because Kanye had to be comfortable enough with Coodie to even allow him to meet his mother. So there were levels. We felt that her spirit was with us throughout this process – Coodie has some amazing stories that prove how God worked and how her spirit worked directly on Kanye through Coodie.
COODIE: When I first met Donda, that’s what God wanted. In their conversations with Kanye, I never said to them, “Yo, you should all talk about this and you should sit over there.” I just captured all of their moments together. I did her grief presentation which was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do because she was a good friend of mine. I had to go through all this footage and put something together. I recently rewatched the tape entitled “Donda and Kanye”. The first thing she said when I put it on was, “Kanye, I have something serious I want to talk to you about.” It seemed like the tape didn’t fully rewind and just sat at that part and waited . When I saw that, it felt like Donda was saying, “I need you to send this to my son.”

COODIE: So I got Kanye’s email from Common and in the subject line of the email I said, “Your mom told me to send you this.” That was a week before he met Trump at the White House . He checked it out the day before he went, and he FaceTimed me and said, “Dude, I can’t remember her saying that in a million years. I say, “Neither do I.” I had this amazing thought: What if she hadn’t said it then? What if she just says it now?
WALD: Nowadays we are our own documentary filmmakers – constantly filming ourselves and uploading our work to social media. Do you think a documentary like this could be made or started today?
COODIE: Absolutely. I shot the last scene in San Francisco with an iPhone.
CHIKE: I think technology is the reason we were able to get this film out even on a platform like Netflix – more content is allowed to come through the pipeline. When we started, the gatekeepers and barriers to entry were much higher.
WALD: When did you both realize that the document’s message was about more than Kanye? It really is an overall statement of ingenuity and purpose.
CHIKE: I would say the message has evolved. We first pitched this project to Kanye as an opportunity [for him] to publicize it. It probably didn’t look like it at that early stage. It was more specific to Kanye. But as we have evolved on our spiritual journeys we have tapped into different things and our feelings about what is important in life have changed. That’s when we realized that the work had a greater purpose – to have a positive impact on people’s lives. What’s important is helping people unleash their passion and having the confidence to do so.
FOREST: As you looked at this old footage, what was it like seeing yourself and charting your own growth?
COODIE: Man I miss my hair. [Laughs] It was great. I had no idea how much I was filming myself.
WALD: If a pre-college dropout could see Kanye the full doc right now, how do you think he would react?
CHIKE: Man, I can’t let my imagination get in the way of God’s manifestation. You have no idea. Everything in life has a reason. Coodie gives a great example – he always equates this with Back to the Future. If you go back and change one thing, it changes everything. Everything that happens to you, good or bad, puts you in the position you are in right now. So if Kanye looks at that in the past, he might not even become Kanye. Who knows?
COODIE: I agree.
WALD: Why did you decide to write the title like that?
CHIKE: We wanted you to captivate from the start. But we also wanted it to mean something, so we looked through several dictionaries and found a word that interests us. We just didn’t want to be too pushy, because life isn’t lying on your face. Life is full of subtext, and much of the meaning is in the subtext.
WALD: My last question for you: What do you hope for more than anything else that the viewers will take away from this documentary?
CHIKE: Just understanding what it takes to achieve your dream and what kind of faith you need to have to overcome the adversities that will come along on this journey. I think we’re just lucky to have examples of that, both with Kanye and Donda. You know, people often say, “Say it into life and it will happen.” But in this film, we actually show you that. We’ll show you what it means to walk the path. It’s a blueprint. I think that’s special, but I also think it was preordained that this blueprint would come about. We are just the ships to deliver it.
