But how good is Berube? Would he be better or worse than Halak? Why do the islanders treat putting Berube on waivers like leaving a brown bag full of cash in a port authority bank?
Berube’s AHL record is pretty strong (67-29-6), but his save percentage is a mediocre .913 in each of his two full seasons. He had a very good practice time last year at the Islanders’ AHL affiliate in Bridgeport last season (4-1, .960 sv%), but that combined with his tiny NHL trial size doesn’t tell us much about what a goaltender he is he will go forward. Berube’s most memorable performance, for me anyway, was a loss in game two last season when he emerged as the lone islander in the second half of a back-to-back duel against reigning Stanley Cup champions Blackhawks in Chicago.
Halak, on the other hand, has plenty of NHL seasons to pull data from. He also had many injuries, which is why the islanders like having Berube with them as an insurance policy.

Even among goalkeepers, the sports world’s equivalent of Stonehenge, Berube is a mystery.
And now for the soapbox
If a lot of this sounds familiar to you, that’s because we messed it up ad nauseam over the summer.
We expected Halak to be traded then. But then the World Cup happened and Halak was the starter again and the three-keeper experiment was extended for another season.
GM Garth Snow had a chance to put Berube on layoffs before the season started and goalies in the league started getting injured. We have no idea if Berube would have been challenged but the odds are a lot higher now that there are half a dozen goalkeepers on the shelf.
Yes, there are teams like the Kings, Senators and Bruins that could use a Jaroslav Halak right now. But they won’t pay a premium if their usual starter is about to return from injury. And that $4.5 million ticket for this year and next will either scare teams away or end up with the islanders keeping their salary just to get rid of Halak.
In an attempt to play it safe, the islanders have backed themselves into a corner from which there is no easy escape.
This season didn’t start the way they wanted, to say the least. They’re 3-5 going into tonight’s game, their home arena is under fire again from poor ice conditions, and their two big free-agent acquisitions are yet to score while the guys who signed (or were waived) elsewhere ). Berube and keeping rookies Anthony Beauvillier and Mathew Barzal in the 23-man opening list) have already paid off for their new teams.
Does all this mean that the season has been over a month? no But it means they must overcome many obstacles to get back on track before it’s too late. And for a team that as recently as January last year looked like they had the makings of a real competitor, that’s not a comfortable place.
