The plank (also called a front hold, hover, or abdominal bridge) is an isometric core strength exercise that involves holding a position similar to a push-up for as long as possible.

form [edit]

The most common plank is the forearm plank, which is held in a push-up-like position with body weight supported on the forearms, elbows, and toes. There are many variations such as the side plank and the back plank.[1][2] The plank is commonly practiced in Pilates and yoga, and by those training for boxing and other sports.[3][4][5]

The extended plank adds significant difficulty to the standard plank exercise. To perform the extended plank, a person starts in the push-up position and then extends their arms or hands forward as far as they can.[6]

effect [edit]

The plank strengthens your stomach, back and shoulders. Muscles involved in the front plank include:[7]

Watch This Woman Set The World Record For Longest Plank

Dana Glowacka just set a new world record for holding the longest plank.

She planked 4 hours, 19 minutes and 55 seconds at the 1st International Plank Training Conference.

Canadian athlete and extreme planker Dana Glowacka has set a new world record in the female category for longest time in an ab plank position. At the 1st International Plank Training Conference in Illinois in May 2019, she held a plank in front of a group of Guinness World Record officials for an insane 4 hours, 19 minutes and 55 seconds.

“I’m so grateful,” Glowacka wrote in her Instagram post after the event.

Holding a plank for a minute is tough enough, but four hours? That requires some serious skills. Form is key because mistakes are common. For example, looking forward or even up “strains your neck and eventually kills your entire form,” Adam Rosante, a certified personal trainer and author of , previously told Women’s Health. Instead, he advises: “Look at the ground in front of you. Imagine holding a tennis ball between your chin and your neck.” This keeps your spine neutral and helps prevent pain or injury.

Sagging hips are another common no-no. “Often times I see people slumping their shoulders, bulging their chests and sagging their hips,” Betina Gozo, a NASM-certified personal trainer, also previously told the publication.

“It’s one of the first things that happens when your core tires,” agreed Rosante. “In addition to making the movement less effective, it puts stress on your lower back.”

Once your hips sag, your back will usually arch. “When your core tires, your knee-jerk response is to support it by putting some or, in most cases, most of the weight in your arms,” Rosante said. “This position puts pressure on your shoulder joints and spine that you don’t want, and does the work for your core.” (A.k.a. the whole point of plank!)

Do you feel the burglary? Squeeze your glutes and remember to bring your hips back into a straight line. “Moving your feet further apart also gives you a more stable foundation, which makes the movement a bit easier. As you get stronger, you can start closing the gap.”

While Glowacka has clearly mastered all of that – and more – she didn’t get there overnight. Her plank training includes a lot of yoga (she’s also a yoga teacher).
