Daniel Negreanu

Canadian poker player (born 1974)

Daniel Negreanu (;[4] born July 26, 1974) is a Canadian professional poker player who has won six World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets and two World Poker Tour (WPT) championship titles. In 2014, the independent poker ranking service Global Poker Index named Negreanu the best poker player of the decade.[5]

As of 2019, he is the third-biggest live tournament poker winner of all time (behind Justin Bonomo and Bryn Kenney, who both won a special multi-million dollar charity tournament) after winning over $42,000,000 in prize money. [6] He was named WSOP Player of the Year in 2004 and 2013, making him the only player to have won this award more than once. He was also the 2004-2005 WPT Player of the Year. He is the first player to make a final table at each of the three WSOP bracelet locations (Las Vegas, Europe and Asia Pacific) and the first to win a bracelet at each.[7] In 2014 he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.[8]

Early life[edit]

Negreanu was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1974, seven years after his parents Annie and Constantin emigrated from Romania; he is fluent in Romanian.[9] The Negreanus had hoped to start a new life in the United States, but eventually settled in Toronto, where Constantine worked as an electrician and sold confectionery.[10] Daniel is five years younger than his brother Mike.[10] Negreanu was ambitious from a young age, saying in a 2009 interview, “From the age of four I thought I was rich. I told my mother I was going to build a house out of popsicle sticks and move to California.” [11]

He attended Pineway Public School in North York, where the principal complained to his mother about Daniel’s “bad manners or behavior” and threatened to expel him from the school for “disobeying school rules.”[11] While nursing, he dreams of a career as a professional snooker player. The then 15-year-old learned to play poker.[12] By the age of 16, he was spending time in pool halls, hustle and bustle, sports betting, and card games.[13]

Missing several credits before graduation, he dropped out of high school and began his life as a jack of all trades, playing at local charity casinos, usually Casino Country and Fundtime Games, and scouring the city for illegal games. While in Toronto, he met and began dating Evelyn Ng,[14] who would also become a well-known professional poker player. After building a bankroll, he moved to Las Vegas at the age of 22 to pursue his dream of becoming a professional poker player. However, “The Strip” defeated him and he was forced to return to Toronto to rebuild his bankroll.

Poker career[ edit ]

Negreanu is an accomplished tournament and cash game player. He has six World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets and two World Poker Tour (WPT) championships. He has also reached multiple WSOP and WPT final tables and won various other tournament titles. Negreanu was named 2004 Card Player of the Year[15] and WSOP Player of the Year[2]. He was also named WPT Player of the Year 2004-05. In 2006, Negreanu was named “Favorite Poker Player” at Card Player Magazine’s Player of the Year Awards Gala. In 2013, he won two WSOP bracelets and another WSOP Player of the Year award, becoming the only player to win the award twice.[16] In November 2014, Negreanu was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in Las Vegas.

Negreanu has regularly played the “Big Game” at Bobby’s Room in the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas, where the limits are $400 to $800 or more and the games are mixed. He is a self-confessed action junkie who claims to always seek new challenges and set high goals. Unlike many other players, he is open about his results and posts regular updates on the Full Contact Poker forums. Part of Negreanu’s success is attributed to his ability to read opponents. When asked about this, Negreanu explained that the most important skill he uses is observing what hands his opponents are playing and how skilled they are at playing them.[17]

Tournament Poker [ edit ]

World Series of Poker[edit]

Negreanu’s first cash at the WSOP was also his first WSOP bracelet. Negreanu won $169,460 in the $2,000 Pot Limit Hold’em event at the 1998 World Series of Poker, becoming the youngest WSOP bracelet winner in history – a record he held until 2004 (Scott Fischman). Negreanu has since captured five more bracelets. He has 36 WSOP final table appearances in his career, including two each at WSOP Europe and WSOP Asia-Pacific, and 103 cashes.[2]

In December 2005, Negreanu became a professional spokesperson for an online poker site called Poker Mountain. He played in this cardroom under the name “KidPoker”. In June 2005, he announced his decision to end this relationship due to software problems serious enough to cause the site to be shut down.[21] In 2006, he used Full Contact Poker to start a competition to select a protégé that Daniel was trying to mold into a world-class live tournament poker player. He agreed to pay the protégé’s entry fee for four $10,000 buy-in events. Daniel’s first protégé was Brian Fidler. In 2007 Daniel directed a second protégé promotion won by Anthony Mak.

In June 2007, Negreanu signed with PokerStars, joining Chris Moneymaker and many other professional poker players as a member of Team PokerStars.[1] His Full Contact Poker site has since returned to being a forum and information site. After “Black Friday” (the US government’s crackdown on online poker in 2011), Negreanu moved back to Canada to continue playing online poker on PokerStars.

On May 23, 2019, after almost 12 years as a member of Team PokerStars, Negreanu announced that he and PokerStars were parting ways.[22]

Heads-up challenge [ edit ]

On July 29, 2020, Negreanu publicly accepted a challenge to a high-stakes grudge match after a year-long feud with fellow poker pro Doug Polk. They played 25,000 hands of $200/$400 No-Limit Texas Hold’em.[23][24] The duel ended on February 4, 2021 when Polk won approximately $1,200,000 over 25,000 hands.[25]

The two played three rounds of PokerGo’s High Stakes Duel II, with the third round doubling the buy-in from the initial $50,000 to $200,000. Phil Hellmuth beat Negreanu in all three rounds for a total of $350,000. Other poker activities [ edit ]

Upon opening, Wynn Las Vegas Resort recruited him as their “poker ambassador” to play for any stake in their poker room. The arrangement lasted until October 2005, when he signed out because it limited his ability to gamble for high stakes outside of the Wynn.

Negreanu has played poker on various TV shows such as Late Night Poker, Poker After Dark, and High Stakes Poker, and has also served as a commentator and assistant host on Ultimate Poker Challenge. He also appeared in the third season of the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament. Negreanu’s section presents and explains the strategy of small ball poker. Negreanu is also featured in the 2006 poker video game Stacked with Daniel Negreanu, which provides tips and hints on how to play effectively. Doyle Brunson

American poker player (born 1933)

Doyle F. Brunson[4] (born August 10, 1933)[5] is a retired American poker player who played professionally for over 50 years.[6][7] He is a two-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event Champion, inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame, and is the author of several books on poker.

Brunson was the first player to win $1 million in poker tournaments. He has won ten WSOP bracelets over the course of his career, level on points with Johnny Chan and Phil Ivey for second all-time, behind Phil Hellmuth’s sixteen bracelets. He is also one of only four players to have won the World Series of Poker Main Event multiple times, which he did in 1976 and 1977. He is also one of only three players, along with Bill Boyd and Loren Klein, to have won WSOP tournaments in four consecutive years. He is also the first of six players to win both the WSOP Main Event and a World Poker Tour title. In January 2006, Bluff Magazine voted Brunson the most influential force in the world of poker.[8]

On June 11, 2018, Brunson announced that he would be retiring from tournament poker this summer.[9] That day he took part in the $10,000 2-7 single draw at the 2018 WSOP. He made the final table and finished sixth, earning $43,963.[1]

Early life[edit]

Brunson was born in Longworth, Fisher County, Texas, one of three children. He was part of the All-State Texas basketball team. At the 1950 Texas Interscholastic Track Meet, he won the one-mile event with a time of 4:43. Although he received offers from many colleges, he attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas.[11]

The NBA’s Minneapolis Lakers showed interest in Brunson, but a knee injury ended his hopes of becoming a professional basketball player.[10] Due to the injury, he still occasionally needs a crutch and said a broken leg ruined his lifelong dream of playing in the NBA.[12] Brunson earned a bachelor’s degree in 1954 and a master’s degree in administrative education the following year. He would later work as a principal.

Brunson had started playing poker prior to his injury, playing five card draw. He gambled more after being injured and his winnings covered his expenses. After graduating, he took a job as an office equipment salesman. On his first day, he was invited to a seven-card Stud game and won more than a month’s salary. He soon left the company and became a professional poker player.

Poker career[ edit ]

Doyle Brunson on his way to his 1976 WSOP Main Event title.

Brunson began playing illegal games on Exchange Street in Fort Worth with his friend Dwayne Hamilton. Eventually, they began touring around Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana playing in bigger games and meeting fellow pros Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts. The illegal games Brunson played during this period were usually run by criminals, who were often members of organized crime, so the rules weren’t always enforced. Brunson has admitted to being pulled at him with a gun and robbed and beaten several times.

Hamilton moved back to Fort Worth while the others banded together and traveled around together to play poker, golf and, in Doyle’s words, “just about everything” on her first serious trip to Las Vegas and lost it all, a six-figure sum. They decided to stop playing as partners but remained friends.

Brunson eventually settled in Las Vegas. He has been a regular at the World Series of Poker since its inception in 1970 and has competed in the Main Event nearly every year since, in addition to many of the previous bracelet awards events.[14] Before his back-to-back victories, he made the final table of a couple of WSOP championship events, but since the event was a winner, they don’t count as cash wins. Aside from his two championship wins in 1976 and 1977, Brunson’s other Main Event wins include: 1972 (3rd place), 1980 (runner-up to three-time Main Event winner Stu Ungar), 1982 (4th place), 1983 (3rd place), 1997 (16th), 2004 (53rd) and 2013 (409th).

Brunson is the author of Super/System, widely regarded as one of the most authoritative books on poker. Originally self-published in 1978, Super/System was the book credited with transforming poker by giving ordinary players a glimpse into the way pros like Brunson played and won, so much so that Brunson believes that it cost him a lot of money. An updated version, Super/System 2, was released in 2004. In addition to Brunson, several top poker players have contributed chapters to Super/System, including Bobby Baldwin, Mike Caro, David Sklansky, Chip Reese and Joey Hawthorne. The book is subtitled How I made one million dollar playing poker by Doyle Brunson. Brunson is also the author of Poker Wisdom of a Champion, originally published by Lyle Stuart as Laut Doyle in 1984.[15]

Brunson continued to play at the biggest poker games in the world, including a $4,000/$8,000 limit poker game at Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio. He also plays in many of the biggest poker tournaments around the world. In 2003 he won his ninth gold bracelet in a mixed games event and in 2004 he placed 53rd (in a field of 2,576) in the No Limit Texas Hold’em Championship event. He won the Legends of Poker World Poker Tour (WPT) event in 2004 (earning him a $1.1 million prize) and finished fourth in the WPT’s first championship event. In the early morning of July 1, 2005, less than a week after Chan won his 10th gold bracelet (presented to every WSOP tournament winner) – setting a new record – Brunson tied him at the 2005 WSOP by winning the $5,000 No Limit Shorthanded won Texas Hold’em event. He is currently six bracelets behind Phil Hellmuth, who won his 16th bracelet at the 2021 World Series of Poker. He cashed in the 2013 World Series of Poker $10,000 No Limit Hold’em Championship event, marking his fifth decade of cashing in the event.[16]

As of 2018, his total live tournament winnings exceeded $6,100,000.[3] He has accumulated over $3,000,000 in cash from his 37 cashes at the WSOP.[1]

Brunson has two Texas Hold’em hands named after him. Holding ten-two got his name because he won the No Limit Hold’em event at the World Series of Poker two years in a row with a ten and a two (1976 and 1977 respectively) and a full house on both occasions completed . In both 1976 and 1977 he was an underdog in the last hand. The other hand, known especially in Texas as “Doyle Brunson,” is the ace and queen of each suit because, as he says on page 519 of Super/System, “he never plays that hand.” However, he changed his phrasing to Super/System 2, noting that he “tries to never play that hand.”

family life[edit]

Brunson met his future wife, Louise, in 1959 and married her in August 1962. Louise became pregnant, but later that year a tumor was discovered in Doyle’s neck. During the operation, the surgeons found that the cancer had spread. They figured surgery would prolong his life long enough for him to see the baby born, so they went ahead. After the operation, no trace of the cancer could be found.[18]

Brunson has credited his healing to the prayers of his wife’s friends and her correspondence with Kathryn Kuhlman, a self-proclaimed Christian spiritual healer.[19] Louise soon developed a tumor and when she had surgery it was found that her tumor was gone too. In 1975, her daughter Doyla was diagnosed with scoliosis, but within three months her spine fully straightened. Doyla died of heart valve disease at the age of 18.[20]

His son Todd also plays poker professionally. Todd won a bracelet playing $2,500 Omaha Hi-Lo at the 2005 World Series of Poker, making Doyle and Todd the first father-son combination to win a World Series bracelet.[21] His daughter Pamela played in the 2007 World Series of Poker and 2009 World Series of Poker Main Events, surpassing both Doyle and Todd on both occasions.

SEC investigation [ edit ]

On December 14, 2005, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit[22] to enforce subpoenas issued to Doyle Brunson’s attorneys relating to his July 2005 unsolicited bid to purchase WPT Enterprises, Inc., the listed owners of the World Poker Tour at a high price compared to the market value at the time. Shortly thereafter, the commission claimed, a PR firm hired by Brunson and a website he endorsed made the offer public. The commission claimed that the publication of this bid, which received extensive media coverage, triggered a sharp rise in WPT’s share price on record trading volume. Pressing for details, Brunson and his attorneys immediately stopped responding to the WPT and the media. Instead, Brunson backed out of the engagement after the offer was made. When the WPT publicly disclosed the unresponsiveness of Brunson and his law firm, the stock price fell sharply, costing investors tens of millions of dollars in lost market value. The offer eventually expired on its terms. [citation required]

The SEC is officially investigating whether Brunson’s offering and its disclosure violate federal securities laws, including the anti-fraud provisions of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. As part of its investigation, the SEC subpoenaed documents and testimonies from Brunson’s attorneys. However, Brunson, who invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and declined to testify in the inquest, directed his attorneys to withhold certain documents and not testify on critical aspects of the offer, in accordance with attorney-client privilege and the work product doctrine. The subpoena enforcement action was aimed at removing these privileges on various legal grounds, including the felony fraud exception, and forcing Brunson’s firm to produce the requested documents and testimony.[23] The case was dropped by the SEC in 2007.[24]

Doyle’s room [ edit ]

Doyles Room was an online poker room established in 2004. Originally part of the Tribeca Poker Network (now part of the Playtech iPoker network), Doyles Room moved to the Microgaming (Prima) Poker Network in 2007 and to the Cake Poker Network in January 2009, and most recently to the Yatahay Network in January 2011. On May 26, 2011, Doyle’s Room was seized as part of an investigation into violations of online gambling laws. After the events of April 15, Brunson severed ties with Doyle’s Room.[25] In October 2011, Doyles Room was acquired by Americas Cardroom.[26]
