Darrelle Shavar Revis (born July 14, 1985) is a former American football cornerback who played 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), primarily with the New York Jets. He played college football in Pittsburgh and was selected in the first round by the Jets in the 2007 NFL Draft. In addition to his eight non-consecutive seasons with the Jets, he played one season each for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs.
One of the greatest cornerbacks of all time[1][2][3][4][5], Revis has been called up to seven Pro Bowls and was a first-team All-Pro four times during his career. He also won a Super Bowl title with the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX. Due to his skill and ability to take out the best receiver on opposing teams, his place on the field earned the nickname “Revis Island”, which he would use as a trademark. In 2020, Revis was named to the NFL’s 2010 All-Decade Team.

Revis attended Aliquippa High School in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. His high school honors included Pittsburgh Tribune-Review 2003 Player of the Year, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 2003 WPIAL Class AA Player of the Year, and 2003 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 22.
At the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AA State Championship football game, he led Aliquippa to a 32–27 win over Northern Lehigh by scoring five touchdowns, including three rushing touchdowns, a punt return, and Northern’s return of a blocked field goal attempt Lehigh. He also completed a 39-yard pass, had a reception and an interception in the game.
In his junior and senior years of high school, Revis led Aliquippa to the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) basketball championships, leading the team in both years and with a 25.2 PPG average in his senior season culminated. He also had the most interceptions of any cornerback in high school. In track and field, Revis ran in the WPIAL Class AA 4×100 meter relay team of Quips, which placed third at the state championships.
College career[edit]
Revis attended the University of Pittsburgh and played for the Pittsburgh Panthers football team. He was named a first-team All-America freshman for his 2004 freshman campaign. Revis played all 12 games and started 11 of those 12. Revis ranked fifth on the team with 49 tackles, the team lead with 12 broken passes, and second on the team with 14 passes defended. Revis also had two interceptions. The most important of the two interceptions was against the West Virginia Mountaineers, when he intercepted a late pass that gave the Panthers the game win. Revis also had a career-high seven tackles against the Boston College Eagles. With Pitt leading 17-10, the Boston College Eagles opted to go fourth late in the fourth quarter. The pass reached the one-yard line, but Revis hit the receiver, preventing him from making the score.
Revis’ second season in 2005 was another excellent campaign. Revis earned a first-team All-Big East as a cornerback. Revis led the Panthers with four interceptions and was second on the team with 13 passes defended. Revis finished second in the Big East with two recovered fumbles. Revis hit a 79-yard punt return for a goal against the Cincinnati Bearcats and blocked a field goal against the Connecticut Huskies that was returned for the goal. Revis also had an interception and totaled 119 punt return yards against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
In his final year with Pitt, his junior campaign in 2006, Revis established himself on the national stage. At the end of the season he was a nominee for the Jim Thorpe Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. Revis recorded interceptions against the Virginia Cavaliers and Cincinnati, both of which were taken back for touchdowns.
During the 2006 Backyard Brawl game with rival West Virginia, Revis made a dynamic 73-yard punt return while breaking multiple tackles and eventually scoring a touchdown late in the second quarter. On January 10, 2007, Revis announced that he would be giving up his senior year in Pittsburgh to draft the 2007 NFL Draft. He was considered one of the top three cornerbacks available along with Leon Hall of Michigan and Aaron Ross of Texas and was one of 30 drafted. He received an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine but decided not to attend after suffering a strained hamstring. Revis impressed the Boy Scouts at Pro Day in Pittsburgh, wowing them with his 40-yard dash, a prime concern for the Boy Scouts before completing the test. Teryl Austin, then-Arizona Cardinals defenseman coach, stated, “No one walked away disappointed.”[13] Revis has been touted as having “excellent reporting techniques” by ESPN analyst Len Pasquarelli.[14]

New York Jets[edit]
New York Jets scout Terry Bradway was impressed with Revis’ training but was concerned about the level of competition Pittsburgh was playing as Louisville’s Mario Urrutia was the toughest receiver Revis faced during the season. Despite these concerns, the organization was so impressed with his man and zone coverage techniques and his ability to play the run that they decided to trade him in the draft. Originally, New York discussed trading draft picks with the Houston Texans, who had the 10th overall pick. However, when the deal fell through, they traded their first, second, and fifth round picks for the Carolina Panthers, advancing from 25th overall to 14th overall to select Revision.[18][19]
Revis missed the first 21 days of training camp while his agents negotiated a contract.[20] At one point, Revis’ mother was flown in from Pittsburgh to expedite the negotiation process.[21] On August 15, 2007, the Jets reached an agreement with Revis. The 47-page contract was worth about $36 million over five years, according to ESPN writer John Clayton.[21]
Rookie season[edit]
Head coach Eric Mangini expected Revis to contribute immediately, citing his skills on defense and special teams. He compared Revis’ talents to those of Ty Law, once described as a “shutdown” cornerback. Revis made his preseason debut against the New York Giants on August 25, 2007 after less than a week of practice. On his debut, he recorded five tackles and one pass defense against receiver Sinorice Moss and had a punt return for 13 yards. Revis was named starting cornerback for the Jets at the end of preseason, becoming the first Jets rookie cornerback to start since Ray Mickens in 1996.
In his first game against the New England Patriots, Revis recorded 7 tackles and held Wes Welker on 6 catches for 61 yards in the 38-14 loss. He recorded the first interception of his career against division rivals Buffalo Bills during their Week 8 matchup. Revis made great strides throughout the season, remaining the Jets’ solid starter and one of their best defensive players. Season 2008[edit]
The Jets opened the season with a match-up against the Miami Dolphins. Revis, the established starter, intercepted former Jet Chad Pennington’s pass in the end zone, with five seconds remaining to preserve the Jets’ 20-14 win. A week later, Revis held Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss for 22 yards on two catches. Mangini praised Revis’ attention to detail and perfecting his game’s mistakes. The following week, the Jets faced the Arizona Cardinals with wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. He intercepted two passes from Kurt Warner, one of which he returned for 32 yards for a touchdown, the first of his NFL career.
Despite his performance alongside All-Pro safety Kerry Rhodes, the Jets’ pass defense ranked 28th[33], prompting coach Eric Mangini to pick free agent All-Pro cornerback and former New York Jet Ty Law in November to oblige.[34] Although Law was added to bolster the Jets’ pass defense, the pass defense continued to struggle and would finish 29th overall by the end of the season, despite Revis’ positive performance. Revis’ side was known not to be tested on the field, with teams looking to tackle rookie cornerback Dwight Lowery instead.
For his efforts, Revis was voted to the 2009 Pro Bowl. During the Pro Bowl, Revis one-handedly intercepted a pass intended for Anquan Boldin.
Season 2009[edit]
Revis has become the NFL’s preeminent lockdown cornerback, drawing comparisons to Deion Sanders and Rod Woodson and propelling the Jets’ defense to the top of the charts. Tim Graham, ESPN.[39]
Revis started the 2009 season with some of football’s best wide receivers. In Week 1, he helped limit Houston Texans pro-bowler Andre Johnson to four receptions for 35 yards. Revis then faced Tom Brady and the New England Patriots when he faced another Pro Bowl receiver, Randy Moss, limiting him to four receptions and 24 yards after catching 14 passes for 141 yards the week before . Revis also had an interception against Brady and helped the Jets’ defense become the first team since 2006 to prevent the Patriots from scoring a touchdown. In Week 11, Revis held Moss for limited yards despite giving up a touchdown to Moss. Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins was the only other blemish on Revis’s season when he was beaten by wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. for a 53-yard touchdown reception on Monday Night Football during the Jets’ 31–27 loss in Week 5 who was hit dolphins.[41]
Former Jets head coach Rex Ryan has stated multiple times that he thinks Revis is the “best” cornerback in the NFL and that he’s also the best cornerback he’s worked with in all his years coaching defense Has. Deion Sanders also said: “Revis will be the best corner in the game for years.”[42]
Revis ended the year with a Pro Bowl berth, earning a lot of respect inside and outside the league. In Week 17 (the NFL’s last regular week of the season), he caged Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco and prevented Ochocinco from making a single reception, partly because a win would not put Cincinnati to a higher playoff seed, and also because Ochocinco who left the game with an injured knee. The Jets won the game 37-0, their second shutout and their third “defensive” shutout. The win qualified the Jets for the postseason, and the two teams met again in the first round six days later. During the Jets’ 24-14 win over the Bengals, Revis closed Ochocinco again, limiting him to two catches for 28 yards and collecting an interception.

In the second week of the playoffs, Revis and the Jets defeated the AFC’s 2nd-seeded San Diego Chargers 17-14. Because the Chargers had a wide array of highly acclaimed receivers, Revis had to cover for most of them, but San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers threw the ball to a receiver Revis covered only three times throughout the game. Two of the three were thrown away by Revis for an incomplete pass and the third was an interception. His interception was made to bounce to the ground to catch a ball that deflected off Chargers’ wide receiver Vincent Jackson’s shoe. Revis’ interception changed the dynamic of the game and was instrumental in the Jets’ 17-14 win. The win took the Jets to the AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts, their first trip to the AFC Championship since 1998. The Jets lost 30–17 on no goals (0 points) in the second half and a poor runner-up game , with the exception of Revis itself, which only allowed 2 receptions.

Season 2010[edit]
Revis missed most of training camp and all of the team’s four preseason competitions while awaiting a new contract. In the fourth year of a six-year contract, he was to receive about $1 million.[45] On September 5, an agreement was reached on a guaranteed four-year, $32 million contract, and Revis subsequently reported to camp the next day, a week before the team’s season opener.
During the team’s Week 2 matchup against the New England Patriots after being hit by Randy Moss for a deep touchdown, Revis left the game with what later turned out to be a strained hamstring. Revis would miss two weeks of the season. Revis aggravated the hamstring again after the team’s matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. On October 17, 2010, Revis activated two hours before kickoff against the Denver Broncos and started the game. The Jets went into a bye week after their win over Denver, allowing Revis to rehab his hamstring. Revis has now declared itself 100 percent.[53]
During the 2011 AFC Wild Card round, Revis held Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne by a catch for a yard in a win over the Colts. The Jets defeated the New England Patriots in the Divisional Round but lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. Revis finished the year with 32 tackles but recorded no interceptions in 13 games.

Season 2011[edit]
The Jets opened their 2011 season against the Dallas Cowboys on September 11, 2011. The game was played at MetLife Stadium on Sunday Night Football to commemorate the ten year anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The Jets were tied with the Cowboys 24-24 in the final minutes when Revis intercepted a Tony Romo pass intended for Dez Bryant to put the Jets within range of the field goal. Nick Folk converted the game-winning field goal to give the Jets the 27-24 win. In Week 6, the Jets played the Dolphins by a 2-3 record in a game some felt was a must-play. Revis intercepted a pass intended for Brandon Marshall and ran it back 100 yards for a touchdown on October 17, 2011. He hit the longest interception return in Jets history, first set by Aaron Glenn in 1996. Later in the same game against the Miami Dolphins, he intercepted another pass from Matt Moore in the fourth quarter to preserve the Jets’ victory by a score of 24-6. On Sunday October 23, 2011, the Jets played the San Diego Chargers. In the fourth quarter, the Jets were trailing 21-17 and the Chargers had the ball in Jets territory when Darrelle Revis intercepted a pass intended for Vincent Jackson, which deflected straight into Revis’ hands. Later in the drive, Mark Sanchez completed a touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress, his 3rd of the game. The Jets would win 27-21. After 13 games, the Jets were 8-5 on a 3-game winning streak and attempting to make the playoffs for 3 straight years. But the Jets would lose their next 3 games and miss the playoffs by 1 game with a record of 8-8. After the season, it became apparent that the Jets dressing room was struggling.[58] Revis finished the year with 52 tackles and 4 interceptions and was selected to his fourth Pro Bowl and third All-Pro team.
Season 2012[edit]
Revis entered the 2012 season hinting he may not attend training camp in hopes of revising his contract. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract status, Revis attended the training camp.[59] The Jets’ season opener was played on September 9, 2012 against the Buffalo Bills. Revis intercepted a pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick, which set up a Mark Sanchez touchdown on the ensuing drive. The Jets would go on to defeat the Bills 48–28. Revis recorded five tackles in addition to interceptions, but was taken out of the game in the fourth quarter after teammate Bart Scott accidentally hit Revis with his knee to the head while Revis was still on the ground. Revis was diagnosed with a minor concussion and was subsequently ruled out for Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He returned the following week against the Miami Dolphins, where he recovered from a fumble but later left the game with an undisclosed knee injury. An MRI performed the following day revealed that Revis suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and would be out for the remainder of the season. He was placed on injured reserve on October 12, 2012.[64]

On December 27, Revis was selected to his 5th Pro Bowl, his first with Tampa Bay. After the season, he was named SN Comeback Player of the Year. During his first and only season at Tampa Bay, Revis started all 16 games with a sack, 2 interceptions, 11 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and 50 tackles.
Despite Revis’ stellar season, he wasn’t an ideal fit for Tampa Bay’s defense system. When Lovie Smith was hired to replace Greg Schiano, he brought his Tampa 2 defense, a zone defense focused on an elite middle linebacker, not a shutdown corner. Revis, who is an elite man-to-man cornerback, was rumored to be on the trade bloc for his hefty $16 million salary for the 2014 season.

On March 12, 2014, the Bucs released Revis after several failed attempts to trade him, making him an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career.
New England Patriots[edit]
On March 12, 2014, within hours of being fired by the Buccaneers, Revis signed with the New England Patriots to a one-year, $12 million contract with the salary cap spread over two years. In Revis’ first and only season in New England, he had 47 tackles, 2 interceptions, 14 passes defended and 1 forced fumble. The Patriots finished the season 12-4.
In the division round playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens, Revis had 2 pass interference calls on wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. The Patriots would win the game 35-31 and advance to the AFC Championship game. In the AFC championship game, Revis recorded an interception from Andrew Luck and the Patriots defeated the Indianapolis Colts 45-7.
This was Revis’ first trip to the Super Bowl. The Patriots faced the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX on February 1, 2015, winning 28-24. Revis counted a sack in the game.
After the season, the Patriots did not receive a $20 million option in Revis’ contract to bring him back for a second year.
Second stint with Jets
Season 2015[edit]
The New York Jets signed Revis to a five-year, $70 million, $39 million guaranteed contract on March 10, 2015. However, the Jets were the subject of investigations into tampering after the Patriots filed charges. Jets owner Woody Johnson commented on Revis, who was still under contract with New England at the time.[74] Johnson was fined $100,000; However, the Jets’ counter-inquiry into Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s comments about Revis after re-signing with New York was dismissed by the league. Revis suffered a concussion against the Houston Texans on November 22, 2015. He was named to his seventh Pro Bowl and ranked 24th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016. In 14 games of 2015, Revis finished with 39 tackles, five interceptions and nine pass defenses.
Season 2016[edit]
The 2016 season was one of Revis’ worst games, with opposing quarterback ratings of 91.7 compared to 59.3 in previous years. He finished 2016 on 15 games with 53 tackles, five passes defended and one interception.
On February 28, 2017, the Jets announced that Revis would be released at the start of free agency on March 9, 2017.[78]

Kansas City Chiefs[edit]
On November 22, 2017, Revis signed a two-year, $11 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. On February 8, 2018, Revis was released by the Chiefs after playing just six games for the team, including the playoffs.

Personal life[edit]
Revis is the nephew of former NFL defenseman Sean Gilbert.[84] Revis has a daughter and a son.[85] In December 2012, Darrelle released his own shoe, the Nike Zoom Revis, which comes in a variety of colorways. Revis is the cousin of New York Jets safety Jordan Whitehead. [86] Also the cousin of cornerback Mark Gilbert (Detroit Lions).
On February 16, 2017, around 2:40 a.m., Revis was involved in a street brawl in Pittsburgh. Revis was suspected of attacking two men and knocking them unconscious. A supporter attempted to tape Revis on a cell phone, prompting Revis to grab the phone and throw it into the street. That night, Revis was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, terrorist threats and counter-conspiracy.[87] Revis turned himself in to police the following day and was released on non-monetary bail.[88] All charges were dismissed on March 15 after a friend of Revis’s testified that he was responsible for rendering the two men unconscious.[89][90]

Darrelle Shavar Revis (born July 14, 1985) is a former American football cornerback who played 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), primarily with the New York Jets. He played college football in Pittsburgh and was selected in the first round by the Jets in the 2007 NFL Draft. In addition to his eight non-consecutive seasons with the Jets, he played one season each for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs.
One of the greatest cornerbacks of all time[1][2][3][4][5], Revis has been called up to seven Pro Bowls and was a first-team All-Pro four times during his career. He also won a Super Bowl title with the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX. Due to his skill and ability to take out the best receiver on opposing teams, his place on the field earned the nickname “Revis Island”, which he would use as a trademark. In 2020, Revis was named to the NFL’s 2010 All-Decade Team.
High school career[edit]
Revis attended Aliquippa High School in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. His high school honors included Pittsburgh Tribune-Review 2003 Player of the Year, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 2003 WPIAL Class AA Player of the Year, and 2003 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 22.
At the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AA State Championship football game, he led Aliquippa to a 32–27 win over Northern Lehigh by scoring five touchdowns, including three rushing touchdowns, a punt return, and Northern’s return of a blocked field goal attempt Lehigh. He also completed a 39-yard pass, had a reception and an interception in the game.
In his junior and senior years of high school, Revis led Aliquippa to the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) basketball championships, leading the team in both years and with a 25.2 PPG average in his senior season culminated. He also had the most interceptions of any cornerback in high school. In track and field, Revis ran in the WPIAL Class AA 4×100 meter relay team of Quips, which placed third at the state championships.
College career[edit]
Revis attended the University of Pittsburgh and played for the Pittsburgh Panthers football team. He was named a first-team All-America freshman for his 2004 freshman campaign. Revis played all 12 games and started 11 of those 12. Revis ranked fifth on the team with 49 tackles, the team lead with 12 broken passes, and second on the team with 14 passes defended. Revis also had two interceptions. The most important of the two interceptions was against the West Virginia Mountaineers, when he intercepted a late pass that gave the Panthers the game win. Revis also had a career-high seven tackles against the Boston College Eagles. With Pitt leading 17-10, the Boston College Eagles opted to go fourth late in the fourth quarter. The pass reached the one-yard line, but Revis hit the receiver, preventing him from making the score.
Revis’ second season in 2005 was another excellent campaign. Revis earned a first-team All-Big East as a cornerback. Revis led the Panthers with four interceptions and was second on the team with 13 passes defended. Revis finished second in the Big East with two recovered fumbles. Revis hit a 79-yard punt return for a goal against the Cincinnati Bearcats and blocked a field goal against the Connecticut Huskies that was returned for the goal. Revis also had an interception and totaled 119 punt return yards against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
In his final year with Pitt, his junior campaign in 2006, Revis established himself on the national stage. At the end of the season he was a nominee for the Jim Thorpe Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. Revis recorded interceptions against the Virginia Cavaliers and Cincinnati, both of which were taken back for touchdowns.
During the 2006 Backyard Brawl game with rival West Virginia, Revis made a dynamic 73-yard punt return while breaking multiple tackles and eventually scoring a touchdown late in the second quarter. The key block to free him, held by Pitt wide receiver Derek Kinder, took out two climbers. The game was nominated for “Best Play” at the 2007 ESPY Awards and voted the best college football game of the year.[9]

On January 10, 2007, Revis announced that he would be giving up his senior year in Pittsburgh to draft the 2007 NFL Draft. He was considered one of the top three cornerbacks available along with Leon Hall of Michigan and Aaron Ross of Texas and was one of 30 drafted. He received an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine but decided not to attend after suffering a strained hamstring. Revis impressed the Boy Scouts at Pro Day in Pittsburgh, wowing them with his 40-yard dash, a prime concern for the Boy Scouts before completing the test. Teryl Austin, then-Arizona Cardinals defenseman coach, stated, “No one walked away disappointed.”[13] Revis has been touted as having “excellent reporting techniques” by ESPN analyst Len Pasquarelli.[14]

New York Jets[edit]
New York Jets scout Terry Bradway was impressed with Revis’ training but was concerned about the level of competition Pittsburgh was playing as Louisville’s Mario Urrutia was the toughest receiver Revis faced during the season. Despite these concerns, the organization was so impressed with his man and zone coverage techniques and his ability to play the run that they decided to trade him in the draft. Originally, New York discussed trading draft picks with the Houston Texans, who had the 10th overall pick. However, when the deal fell through, they traded their first, second, and fifth round picks for the Carolina Panthers, advancing from 25th overall to 14th overall to select Revision.[18][19]
Revis missed the first 21 days of training camp while his agents negotiated a contract.[20] At one point, Revis’ mother was flown in from Pittsburgh to expedite the negotiation process.[21] On August 15, 2007, the Jets reached an agreement with Revis. The 47-page contract was worth about $36 million over five years, according to ESPN writer John Clayton.[21]
Rookie season[edit]
Head coach Eric Mangini expected Revis to contribute immediately, citing his skills on defense and special teams. He compared Revis’ talents to those of Ty Law, once described as a “shutdown” cornerback. Revis made his preseason debut against the New York Giants on August 25, 2007 after less than a week of practice. On his debut, he recorded five tackles and one pass defense against receiver Sinorice Moss and had a punt return for 13 yards. Revis was named starting cornerback for the Jets at the end of preseason, becoming the first Jets rookie cornerback to start since Ray Mickens in 1996.
In his first game against the New England Patriots, Revis recorded 7 tackles and held Wes Welker on 6 catches for 61 yards in the 38-14 loss. He recorded the first interception of his career against division rivals Buffalo Bills during their Week 8 matchup. Revis made great strides throughout the season, remaining the Jets’ solid starter and one of their best defensive players. Revis started all 16 games and finished his rookie season with 87 total tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and 3 interceptions. Revis was beaten just three times for touchdowns by Braylon Edwards, Lee Evans and Terrell Owens during his rookie season.
Season 2008[edit]
The Jets opened the season with a match-up against the Miami Dolphins. Revis, the established starter, intercepted former Jet Chad Pennington’s pass in the end zone, with five seconds remaining to preserve the Jets’ 20-14 win. A week later, Revis held Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss for 22 yards on two catches. Mangini praised Revis’ attention to detail and perfecting his game’s mistakes. The following week, the Jets faced the Arizona Cardinals with wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. He intercepted two passes from Kurt Warner, one of which he returned for 32 yards for a touchdown, the first of his NFL career.
Despite his performance alongside All-Pro safety Kerry Rhodes, the Jets’ pass defense ranked 28th[33], prompting coach Eric Mangini to pick free agent All-Pro cornerback and former New York Jet Ty Law in November to oblige.[34] Although Law was added to bolster the Jets’ pass defense, the pass defense continued to struggle and would finish 29th overall by the end of the season, despite Revis’ positive performance. Revis’ side was known not to be tested on the field, with teams looking to tackle rookie cornerback Dwight Lowery instead.
For his efforts, Revis was voted to the 2009 Pro Bowl. During the Pro Bowl, Revis one-handedly intercepted a pass intended for Anquan Boldin.
Season 2009[edit]
Revis has become the NFL’s preeminent lockdown cornerback, drawing comparisons to Deion Sanders and Rod Woodson and propelling the Jets’ defense to the top of the charts. Tim Graham, ESPN.[39]
Revis started the 2009 season with some of football’s best wide receivers. In Week 1, he helped limit Houston Texans pro-bowler Andre Johnson to four receptions for 35 yards. Revis then faced Tom Brady and the New England Patriots when he faced another Pro Bowl receiver, Randy Moss, limiting him to four receptions and 24 yards after catching 14 passes for 141 yards the week before . Revis also had an interception against Brady and helped the Jets’ defense become the first team since 2006 to prevent the Patriots from scoring a touchdown. In Week 11, Revis held Moss for limited yards despite giving up a touchdown to Moss. Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins was the only other blemish on Revis’s season when he was beaten by wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. for a 53-yard touchdown reception on Monday Night Football during the Jets’ 31–27 loss in Week 5 who was hit dolphins.[41]
Former Jets head coach Rex Ryan has stated multiple times that he thinks Revis is the “best” cornerback in the NFL and that he’s also the best cornerback he’s worked with in all his years coaching defense Has. NFL Total Access ranked him the #3 cornerback in the league on a Best-in-the-Biz list prior to the start of the 2009 season. Deion Sanders also said: “Revis will be the best corner in the game for years.”[42]
Revis ended the year with a Pro Bowl berth, earning a lot of respect inside and outside the league. In Week 17 (the NFL’s last regular week of the season), he caged Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco and prevented Ochocinco from making a single reception, partly because a win would not put Cincinnati to a higher playoff seed, and also because Ochocinco who left the game with an injured knee. The Jets won the game 37-0, their second shutout and their third “defensive” shutout. The win qualified the Jets for the postseason, and the two teams met again in the first round six days later. During the Jets’ 24-14 win over the Bengals, Revis closed Ochocinco again, limiting him to two catches for 28 yards and collecting an interception.

In the second week of the playoffs, Revis and the Jets defeated the AFC’s 2nd-seeded San Diego Chargers 17-14. Because the Chargers had a wide array of highly acclaimed receivers, Revis had to cover for most of them, but San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers threw the ball to a receiver Revis covered only three times throughout the game. Two of the three were thrown away by Revis for an incomplete pass and the third was an interception. His interception was made to bounce to the ground to catch a ball that deflected off Chargers’ wide receiver Vincent Jackson’s shoe. Revis’ interception changed the dynamic of the game and was instrumental in the Jets’ 17-14 win. The win took the Jets to the AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts, their first trip to the AFC Championship since 1998. The Jets lost 30–17 on no goals (0 points) in the second half and a poor runner-up game , with the exception of Revis itself, which only allowed 2 receptions.

Season 2010[edit]
Revis missed most of training camp and all of the team’s four preseason competitions while awaiting a new contract. In the fourth year of a six-year contract, he was to receive about $1 million.[45] On September 5, an agreement was reached on a guaranteed four-year, $32 million contract, and Revis subsequently reported to camp the next day, a week before the team’s season opener.
During the team’s Week 2 matchup against the New England Patriots after being hit by Randy Moss for a deep touchdown, Revis left the game with what later turned out to be a strained hamstring. Revis would miss two weeks of the season. Revis aggravated the hamstring again after the team’s matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. On October 17, 2010, Revis activated two hours before kickoff against the Denver Broncos and started the game. The Jets went into a bye week after their win over Denver, allowing Revis to rehab his hamstring. Revis has now declared itself 100 percent.[53]
During the 2011 AFC Wild Card round, Revis held Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne by a catch for a yard in a win over the Colts. The Jets defeated the New England Patriots in the Divisional Round but lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. Revis finished the year with 32 tackles but recorded no interceptions in 13 games.

Season 2011[edit]
The Jets opened their 2011 season against the Dallas Cowboys on September 11, 2011. The game was played at MetLife Stadium on Sunday Night Football to commemorate the ten year anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The Jets were tied with the Cowboys 24-24 in the final minutes when Revis intercepted a Tony Romo pass intended for Dez Bryant to put the Jets within range of the field goal. Nick Folk converted the game-winning field goal to give the Jets the 27-24 win. In Week 6, the Jets played the Dolphins by a 2-3 record in a game some felt was a must-play. Revis intercepted a pass intended for Brandon Marshall and ran it back 100 yards for a touchdown on October 17, 2011. He hit the longest interception return in Jets history, first set by Aaron Glenn in 1996. Later in the same game against the Miami Dolphins, he intercepted another pass from Matt Moore in the fourth quarter to preserve the Jets’ victory by a score of 24-6. On Sunday October 23, 2011, the Jets played the San Diego Chargers. In the fourth quarter, the Jets were trailing 21-17 and the Chargers had the ball in Jets territory when Darrelle Revis intercepted a pass intended for Vincent Jackson, which deflected straight into Revis’ hands. Later in the drive, Mark Sanchez completed a touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress, his 3rd of the game. The Jets would win 27-21. After 13 games, the Jets were 8-5 on a 3-game winning streak and attempting to make the playoffs for 3 straight years. But the Jets would lose their next 3 games and miss the playoffs by 1 game with a record of 8-8. After the season, it became apparent that the Jets dressing room was struggling.[58] Revis finished the year with 52 tackles and 4 interceptions and was selected to his fourth Pro Bowl and third All-Pro team.
Season 2012[edit]
Revis entered the 2012 season hinting he may not attend training camp in hopes of revising his contract. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract status, Revis attended the training camp.[59] The Jets’ season opener was played on September 9, 2012 against the Buffalo Bills. Revis intercepted a pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick, which set up a Mark Sanchez touchdown on the ensuing drive. The Jets would go on to defeat the Bills 48–28. Revis recorded five tackles in addition to interceptions, but was taken out of the game in the fourth quarter after teammate Bart Scott accidentally hit Revis with his knee to the head while Revis was still on the ground. Revis was diagnosed with a minor concussion and was subsequently ruled out for Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He returned the following week against the Miami Dolphins, where he recovered from a fumble but later left the game with an undisclosed knee injury. An MRI performed the following day revealed that Revis suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and would be out for the remainder of the season. He was placed on injured reserve on October 12, 2012.[64]
Tampa Bay Buccaneers[edit]

Revis flew a private jet to travel to Tampa, Florida for an official investigation. After an evaluation by team doctors, including team orthopedic surgeon John Zvijac and sports medicine physician Todd Toriscelli, Revis was found healthy.[67]
The Jets gave Revis permission to visit the Buccaneers Sunday morning after reaching an agreement with Tampa Bay on the transaction. Revis managed to land one of the largest contracts in the NFL, along with other elite players like defensive end Mario Williams (six years, $96 million), wide receiver Calvin Johnson (eight years, $132 million) and Larry Fitzgerald (aged eight). years, $113 million).[68] Revis’ 6-year contract was valued at $96 million, making him the highest-paid defenseman in NFL history, [65] however no guaranteed money was included.

Second stint with Jets
Season 2015[edit]
The New York Jets signed Revis to a five-year, $70 million, $39 million guaranteed contract on March 10, 2015. However, the Jets were the subject of investigations into tampering after the Patriots filed charges. Jets owner Woody Johnson commented on Revis, who was still under contract with New England at the time.[74] Johnson was fined $100,000; However, the Jets’ counter-inquiry into Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s comments about Revis after re-signing with New York was dismissed by the league. Revis suffered a concussion against the Houston Texans on November 22, 2015. He was named to his seventh Pro Bowl and ranked 24th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016. In 14 games of 2015, Revis finished with 39 tackles, five interceptions and nine pass defenses.
Season 2016[edit]
The 2016 season was one of Revis’ worst games, with opposing quarterback ratings of 91.7 compared to 59.3 in previous years. He finished 2016 on 15 games with 53 tackles, five passes defended and one interception.
On February 28, 2017, the Jets announced that Revis would be released at the start of free agency on March 9, 2017.[78]

Kansas City Chiefs[edit]
On November 22, 2017, Revis signed a two-year, $11 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. On February 8, 2018, Revis was released by the Chiefs after playing just six games for the team, including the playoffs.

On July 18, 2018, Revis announced his retirement from the NFL after 11 seasons. On July 24, the New York Jets held a small celebration in honor of Revis’ retirement. The Jets made a makeshift miniature Revis Island for his retirement.[82]

Revis is the nephew of former NFL defenseman Sean Gilbert.[84] Revis has a daughter and a son.[85] In December 2012, Darrelle released his own shoe, the Nike Zoom Revis, which comes in a variety of colorways. Revis is the cousin of New York Jets safety Jordan Whitehead. [86] Also the cousin of cornerback Mark Gilbert (Detroit Lions).
On February 16, 2017, around 2:40 a.m., Revis was involved in a street brawl in Pittsburgh. Revis was suspected of attacking two men and knocking them unconscious. A supporter attempted to tape Revis on a cell phone, prompting Revis to grab the phone and throw it into the street. That night, Revis was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, terrorist threats and counter-conspiracy.[87] Revis turned himself in to police the following day and was released on non-monetary bail.[88] All charges were dismissed on March 15 after a friend of Revis’s testified that he was responsible for rendering the two men unconscious.[89][90]
