So, I’ve seen episode 10, and there’s a lot of things I want to talk about that we probably can’t print yet. Apart from that, what are your thoughts on the course of the season? Do you feel like the house with the most merits won?
Yes, this season has really given the competition a boost. You know, by and large, everyone has their favorite house that they love, but I think the deserved house won. You will see it in the sequel.

Has it been harder to keep up the energy this season without a live audience due to COVID?
You know, I know COVID has put us in a very different place in terms of ballroom management. The audience conveys a completely different feeling. You get the buzz of the audience. But due to COVID rules, it put us somewhere else: sort of an intimate atmosphere for the show. Now you don’t just see the performance, you feel it in a whole different way. It’s one thing about the ballroom – even though there was a pandemic going on, there was nothing stopping us from having a ball, even though it was a virtual ball at home. It’s just a small step back into a more intimate space.
I understand.
And I must say that I am fortunate to work with such a legendary family. I’m glad I had such a great season. I also have to say that I’m excited to make my own home on the show too. Father Basquiat is ready to go.
Astonishing. I have to say that I envy you. It looks like hosting the show is one of the coolest jobs in the world. Tell me how you prepare for a show. What are you doing to warm up? Are your jokes always improvised?
Well you’re right about the job. From season 1 to season 2 it gets more intense. But I can tell you that in the ballroom I was able to prepare myself for this opportunity. It’s like throwing a regular ball like any other I moderate or comment on. Ballroom prepared me: I organize events all over the world. Now it’s only home for those who may not have seen a ballroom to follow. So yes, there is a script that I use, but it’s just to point out the main points so people can understand what’s going on.

Apart from the division of categories, everything is self-explanatory: me with the judges, me reacting, me sending someone off the track. A lot of that comes from the real things that are happening, too. That is the natural course of things. And frankly, I love it. It doesn’t seem to be working. It’s like another day to dress up and have fun with my friends.
It’s so awesome. Now we have to talk about your wardrobe, which is amazing. That’s one of the reasons I envy you.
[Laugh]I can also let off steam in the fashion world and let my creative side run free. I have a wonderful stylist, Eric Archibald. We can talk about what I’m going to wear in each episode when we get our themes. It’s awesome: who doesn’t love to dress up? It’s a Legendary thing – we like to dress up with themes. I’ve always had a fashion side in me. So why not host the legendary scene?
What influence do you have on what you wear? Do you have full creative control?
Oh, I have total creative control. Whatever I want, I fit in. I make all decisions about how I dress. I can dress in high fashion brands, couture brands. I can express my creativity.
Do you have a favorite outfit this season?
All.
[Laugh]i love them all I want to wear every day of my life.
I encourage you to. They’re way too cool not to. I want to ask, because of the popularity of the show and because of the popularity of pose, ballroom has become quite common. How do you think the public perception of you has changed in the last two seasons? How has fame changed your life?
Oh, that changed from season 1 to season 2. I made my first trip to New York in a long time. As I was walking through Harlem to get to this job I was doing, I was stopped by a couple of people who said, hi, I’m on the phone with my cousin. She loves you. So that’s the process. I can’t go around pretending everything’s fine. But having the opportunity to be recognized by people, having a great reaction to my outfits and the way I present myself or the way they connect with me made the job even more important . I’m able to let people see who I am and bring my little dashaun-isms to the show.
How have other career options changed for you? Receive more offers?
Well, right now, right now, I’m getting calls ’cause the pride’s rising. It’s a month to celebrate. Pride will be a big thing for me all month. I was just in New York for a campaign that’s coming out. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. And now that everything is opening up, it also gives me the opportunity to work more.
Does hosting give you the same creative satisfaction as comedy or dancing?
You know it’s interesting. I come from such a unique world. I think when I have the opportunity to dance then I love to dance, it’s always my passion. I’m not giving up.
Right.
When I have these opportunities for people to see me move – and I’m a mover – I like that. But I can also reach out. I also have a team of passionate dancers in Los Angeles called The Shady Gang. But it’s also a ballroom thing.
You have a nice entrance here. Where do you see yourself after the show? Of course we want the show to be like American Idol or something where it’s on the air forever. But what do you see after hosting? How are you developing?
Well, I see one thing about myself too: I’m not in a room where I can lie down in different ways. I learn as I do. That’s why I want to tell stories that I’ve lived. I know Ballroom documentaries exist, but there is so much more to say. So I see myself as a producer and leader of certain ideas that I implement. I am also in the process of venturing into music. In the future, people will be able to see it too.

[Laugh]I receive offers to extend my career as an actor. So I’m excited. I wish I could tell what it is, but you know how that process works.

I am fully active. I have a gym membership but I don’t go to the gym. If I move, it must be dancing. I’m not a bad eater either. I don’t eat pork, I don’t eat red meat. I’m not a lemonade drinker. I’m sticking to my water regime. This is how I ensure that the Dashaun – inside and out – remains perfect at all times. I’m an active person. I just had a brand new dog so he keeps me very active. It’s a Doberman pincer.

He’s a big dog. He is active. Everyone is still like this, how are you? I’m 36 and don’t know where the 28 inch waist came from, but I’m lucky enough to have it.
Tell me about that creative satisfaction. What inspires you about dancing or what is cathartic?
Well, I’ve always been a dancer since I was a child. I think to myself, when I discovered fashion and this world that I was stepping into, I realized that dance is an expression. But it’s also about communication. I am fortunate to travel the world teaching people in many different languages and we always communicate through movement. So for me it’s communication – I’m telling a story and how I’m feeling. It’s my way of showing people what I have, or what I’ve done, or what I’ve learned, or the legacy I’m trying to carry on. I am happy to be able to do this anytime and have had the opportunity to work with some great people. I’m fortunate to still have the ability to dance, move and always be on the track. I can do this on many platforms. For me, dancing is a place of security.
