Former Boyfriend of Texas Teen Murdered After 1974 Valentine’s Dance Relives Final Moments with Her

In a Dateline exclusive, Rodney McCoy recounts the last words Carla Walker said to him as he was being pistol whipped and knocked unconscious by her attacker

Former boyfriend of Texas teenager who was murdered after 1974 Valentine’s Dance relives the final moments with her

Rodney McCoy was the last person to see his girlfriend Carla Walker alive before she was dragged from his car after a Valentine’s Day dance nearly 48 years ago.

He lived more than half of his life with these final moments.

“I see Carla’s face and she’s like, ‘Rodney, get my dad,'” he told Dateline NBC in a show that aired Friday (9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST). “And that’s the last word I heard her say. That was the last time I saw her.”

Walker and McCoy, then 17, parked in front of a bowling alley in Fort Worth, Texas after attending a dance at Western Hills High School on February 17, 1974.

At the time, an unidentified man opened and pulled out the passenger door, said to McCoy, “I’m going to kill you,” and began pistol-whipping him, according to an affidavit from the warrant, the WFAA reports.

“He hit me pretty well on the first shot with the butt of the pistol. He stuck his hand in the car and held the gun about three or four inches from my face and started pulling the trigger. I remember clicks — three clicks,” McCoy tells Dateline on this week’s episode. (An exclusive clip is shown below.)

For years, investigators from the Fort Worth Police Department were unable to complete the case until they went on hiatus in September 2020. Aided by advanced technology surrounding DNA testing and genealogy, law enforcement arrested Glen Samuel McCurley on capital murder charges in Walker’s death.

McCurley has been on investigators’ radar ever since they discovered magazine for a .22-caliber Ruger pistol and realized that McCurley, a previously convicted car thief who lived about a mile from the bowling alley, had purchased such a gun.

McCurley was interviewed in 1974 and said his gun was stolen while fishing, but he didn’t report it because his warrant showed he was an ex-convict.

Police learned that McCurley was unemployed the night of the kidnapping and the next day, and that his wife was out of town at the time. He denied any involvement.

When arrested, he continued to deny any involvement in Walker’s death. She was found two days after her disappearance in a culvert where she had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

But last year, during his murder trial, McCurley, now 78, confessed to the crime and pleaded guilty. The trial was dropped and he was immediately sentenced to life imprisonment.

Murder of Carla Walker

victim of a murder

Carla Jan Walker was an American murder victim who was kidnapped on February 17, 1974 from a bowling alley parking lot in Fort Worth, Texas. Her body was found three days later in a drainage ditch just 30 minutes south of Fort Worth.

Case history[ edit ]

Kidnapping and murder[edit]

On the evening of February 17, 1974, Walker was in his car with her boyfriend Rodney McCoy after attending a dance at Western Hills High School. The car door suddenly swung open and the two were attacked by an unknown assailant. McCoy was pistol whipped and rendered unconscious. His last memory of the incident is of Walker being grabbed and taken away by the unidentified man as she cried out for help. Walker was nowhere to be seen after McCoy regained consciousness. McCoy immediately went to Walker’s house to inform her parents after the incident.[1][2]

The police were called and searched the area where she had been kidnapped. Her purse was the only item found in the parking lot. On February 20, 1974, her lifeless body was found near a ditch in Lake Benbrook. The autopsy revealed that she had been beaten, tortured, raped and strangled to death. Toxicology reports also indicated that she had been injected with morphine. The police had several suspects in their sights during the initial investigation and were even able to obtain DNA samples from the crime scene. However, in the 1970s there was no adequate technology to use such samples to identify the killer.[3] A mysterious letter from a person claiming to know the killer was among the few pieces of evidence obtained and released by the police department.[4]

Police investigation[edit]

The murder remained a cold case for 46 years until September 2020 when DNA evidence was sent to Othram Inc. Leads from Othram and a follow-up investigation by Detectives Wagner and Bennett led to the identification of 77-year-old Glen Samuel McCurley as a suspect in the crime. The police took DNA samples from the garbage can in front of his house. He also agreed to provide a DNA sample if questioned by authorities. The comparison of the samples was sufficient to arrest the man and charge him with the crime.[5] He was brought to court in August 2021. However, before the jury reached a verdict, McCurley changed his plea to guilty and he was sentenced to life in prison. McCurley is currently incarcerated in the Gib Lewis Unit and is eligible for parole on March 21, 2029.[9]
