David followed his boyfriend to Chicago for their senior year of college, and in 1992 the two settled in Baltimore, where he had found a job as an airliner and Avril was planning to do his PhD at Johns Hopkins.
Eventually they sold the plane, took out a loan from the bank and opened an independent bookstore and café, which they named Adrian’s Book Café after Avril’s mother. Again, one of Avril’s dreams was to have a bookstore that would reflect her own “deeply eclectic tastes” in books.
