Veteran comedian David Testroet to bring honest, grounded comedy to Pueblo on Saturday

While DJing at a bar in Dubuque, Iowa, David Testroet’s friends entered a standup comedy competition.

They had always said he was funny and with their encouragement, Testroet decided to take up the challenge. He finished second, but he caught the comedy bug.

Thirty years later, Testroet makes most of his living on the road, performing in casinos, clubs and theaters across the country.

His next stop is the Spirit House, 611 N. Main St. for Spirit House Comedy at 8 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s going to be a very fast-paced show and I’m going to be talking about my life … my weight, talking about life and where I grew up,” he said. “People always tell me they like my character on stage, but it’s not a character — it’s just me. If you like me on stage, you’ll like me off stage.”

Testroet’s honest and well-founded material has brought him recognition and success throughout his career.

He was a finalist in the Seattle International Comedy Competition and has hosted the event three times.

He has entertained overseas-based troops, performed at more than 40 comedy clubs across the United States and Canada, and worked with famous comedians such as Jeff Foxxworthy, Ron White and Jeff Dunham.

He has also worked as a voiceover performer and has appeared on ESPN, National Lampoon Radio and others.

A highlight of his 30-year career came just before the pandemic when he was putting on theatrical performances in his hometown of Dubuque.

“I did two shows there and wrote about my hometown for about 20 minutes,” he said. “I didn’t know if people would like it or hate it or shoot me. I ended up killing in my hometown and getting a standing ovation, which is pretty cool.”

Testroet said he’d performed in his hometown half a dozen times before, but never with that kind of reaction.

And while the pandemic took time off the stage for the comics veteran, it gave him time to write even more reality-based material.

It also allowed him to spend time taking photos.

Testroet has long booked comedy gigs near national parks to take wildlife and nature photos.

He’s shot various animals and landmarks around the world and even had a few close encounters with one of North America’s top predators: grizzly bears.

“I was in Yellowstone and noticed a moose carcass in the water,” he said. “I knew something was going to come and get it. I was walking up the river and saw a grizzly coming down. He was close to the carcass and then gave up.”

The dead moose was between him and the bear. The bear changed his mind and decided to go after the carcass after all.

Testroet took 1,200 photos of the bear devouring and tossing the carcass.

“He picked it up and shook it around like it was a dog picking up a sock,” he said.

In another instance, a grizzly bear attacked the comedian.

Testroet said the bear was “bluffing” him. Before he knew it, he realized the bear was nearby.

“She was about 30 feet away,” he said. “Luckily she only charged me for a bluff.”

Testroet also sells photos for extra money. He mainly photographs animals, but also works at weddings – although he prefers to be involved with animals and nature.

About five years ago, Testroet took a break from comedy while his wife was battling cancer.

She went into remission three years ago and Testroet jumped back on the scene.

Thankfully, he was able to pick up right where he left off.

“I hadn’t lost influence with some people when I came back,” he said. “I called a lot of people and told them I was getting back into comedy and I was offered headlining spots.”

Testroet’s passion and love for the craft has not wavered much over the course of three decades.

But his love of comedy isn’t about getting famous — it’s just about making people laugh.

“I’m kind of a loner and I always say I’m going to win the lottery and move to Wyoming,” Testroet said. “But actually I just want to work and stay happy. I don’t want to be on TV or a sitcom. For me, being successful means working and caring for every weekend.”

He also hopes to provide viewers with a much-needed escape.

Instead of talking about politics or current events, Testroet just wants to make people laugh and provide some escapism for an hour at a time.

“Once a woman who was opening for me told me that the audience wants to learn something,” he said. “I told her they would go to school if they wanted to learn something. People go to comedy to forget about life and have to laugh.

“I’m just trying to keep it light-hearted so you can forget everything that’s going on in your life.”

Tickets for the show cost $10 and can be purchased on eventbrite.com or at the Spirit House. Masks are required and social distancing will be in effect.
