National president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority dies after recent illness

Cheryl A. Hickmon, National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Chair of the National Board of Directors, died peacefully last Thursday, January 20, 2022, at the age of 60 after a battle with a “recent illness. ‘ according to the sorority’s national website.

“Her role is remembered not only as a leader but as a colleague, friend and most importantly sister,” the sorority wrote in an announcement on its website. “The entire sorority of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated mourns the loss of President Hickmon.”

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a private, not-for-profit organization, provides help and support through established programs in local communities around the world. The sorority currently has 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters in the United States, Canada, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, West Africa and the Republic of Korea.

More than 10,000 members typically attend Delta Sigma Theta’s biennial national conventions, and hosts each of the seven regional conferences (held during the years when there are no national conventions), according to the sorority’s website usually thousands of members.

A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Ms. Hickmon joined the Hartford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority through the Alpha Xi Chapter of South Carolina State University in 1982 and has served in various capacities at the local, regional and national levels.

These roles included Chapter President of Hartford Alumnae and Alpha Xi, Regional Director East, Regional Representative South Atlantic, National Secretary, Co-Chair of the National Documents Review and Revision Task Force, and Co-Chair of the National Leadership Academy.

“She has served in many capacities during her membership with the organization,” the NAACP said in a statement. “From VP to Atlantic’s regional representative, her dedication and commitment to the legacy organization’s thriving has been unmatched.”

Ms. Hickmon was elected the 27th National President of Delta Sigma Theta last November in Atlanta during the 55th National Convention of the sorority. Following the announcement of Ms. Hickmon’s death, several prayer services were held in her honor and memory.

Outside of Delta Sigma Theta, Ms. Hickmon was a Licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist and worked for more than 30 years at the Montefiore Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Health, where she directed the In Vitro Fertilization Andrology and Endocrinology Laboratories.

Ms. Hickmon was also a founding member of Thrill-seekers Inc. Ski and Adventure Club of New York and has served on the Children’s Defense Fund, the National Council of Negro Woman, and the NAACP, among others. Her work in multiple groups has resulted in her receiving multiple awards, including being recognized as one of the 100 most influential African American women in the state of Connecticut by the Connecticut Chapters of the NAACP and by the Tau Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity inc

Ms. Hickmon’s biography for the Delta Sigma Theta website includes a motto that speaks volumes about her approach to life and work: “Don’t measure life by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away.”

An entrepreneur, Smith is also Senior Vice President of The HR Group Inc., a business consulting firm she has co-owned with her husband Stephen for 30 years. As a corporate executive, Smith spent 18 years in leadership positions at AT&T (Southern Bell), implementing innovative business processes during her tenure. Her skills include proven expertise in organizational effectiveness, business redesign and restructuring, and strategic planning. During this time, she was also a member of the 1994 AT&T Malcolm Baldrige Award winning human resources team. Prior to joining the company, Smith served for several years in various capacities as a university administrator. She is a prolific motivational speaker in the areas of leadership and change management.
