Alison’s weight-loss surgery
Alison sits at the dining table and pushes away the rest of an omelet. “I can’t eat any of this, I’m full,” she says. In fact, it’s not even half eaten. She only had a few bites before her stomach sent a message to her brain telling her to stop.
“I fought for a very long time… It affected me every day.”
Alison’s relationship with food has changed dramatically since she had gastric sleeve surgery six months ago. Before the operation, she weighed 128 kilograms, suffered from constant joint pain and had type 2 diabetes. She hardly left the house.
“I was about 11 or 12 years old when I first noticed I was gaining weight. I suffered from migraines and was put on steroid-based meds, but unfortunately it only helped to gain the weight,” she says.
A few years later, Alison discovered she had polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that can also make it difficult to lose weight. Then, five years ago, she got another dreaded diagnosis โ type 2 diabetes. The drug not only threatened Alison’s health, but also promoted weight gain. The odds were against her.
“I struggled with this for a long time and became very unhappy with how I looked and how I felt. It influenced me every day.
“I’ve tried so many diets and failed. I’ve had so many setbacks with polycystic ovarian syndrome and the meds, but I don’t blame it all for it. I’m the one who put the food in my mouth. It’s a terrible thing to try and overcome.”
Realizing she needed help, Alison inquired about bariatric surgery options. But being eligible for surgery wasn’t that easy. She had to show she could lose enough weight to make the procedure safe and prove she had the discipline to maintain the weight.
โ…my parents offered to help me pay for it myself. It was a great relief to be able to book the operation quickly.โ
Alison successfully reached the admissions threshold but the procedure was not offered by the NHS in her area at the time. Privatization was the only option.

Alison met with Mr Simon Gibson, bariatric surgeon at Nuffield Health Glasgow Hospital and together they decided that a sleeve gastrectomy โ an irreversible operation that would change her relationship with food forever โ was the best course of action.
“Sleeve gastrectomy is becoming an increasingly popular form of bariatric surgery,” says Mr. Gibson.
“It’s just as effective but less complicated than gastric bypass and offers lasting change.”
Alison’s surgery was booked just weeks later. She was placed under general anesthesia while Mr Gibson performed the laparoscopic procedure to staple and remove a large portion of her stomach, effectively transforming it from a pouch to an envelope.
The life-changing effects started immediately. After she woke up, the nurses struggled to control her blood sugar levels, which began to drop. The reason was not a side effect of the surgery but an immediate and complete remission of her type 2 diabetes. For the first time in five years, Alison went off diabetes medication.
Now Alison has lost about 30kg and continues to improve. She eats very small meals and has a strict diet plan to ensure she is getting the nutrients she needs despite her reduced appetite.
“Even though it’s difficult, it’s not negative for me because I needed that support. I think the best part is just enjoying life and not letting weight or what I do control me.โ

Best friends for over 17 years, Jo Cooke and Alison Law now run one of the most famous bridal boutiques in the country.
Their TLC show Curvy Brides’ Boutique kicks off its third season tonight at 8 p.m. on TLC, so we caught up with the pair to chat about what’s in store for them.

Speaking about what to expect from her latest parts of the show, Alison told us: “We’ve gone from half an hour to an hour, still three brides, still a wedding, the show is more of a story now than before you just had a glimpse of the bride.”
The show is a little more personal now because, “The cameras now follow the bride home and her families so you get to see more of it this time, and we’re out and about a little more now, having some fun and being a little naughty at times.”

Things were changed for the Essex duo, as they admitted: “We were able to do things we wouldn’t normally do like drive a tractor.
โWe were lifeguards, we are witnesses to a proposal. Brides have asked for the unusual and we have done it all.โ
When asked about their 17-year strong relationship, the duo laughed and exclaimed, “Awww, that’s a great story.”
Jo continued: “Our youngest children are the same age, about a month between them, they both started kindergarten on the same day when they were two years old.
“I was late – because I’m always late – and so is Alison. I was standing behind her and her tag was sticking out, which is one of my favorite problems, so I stuck her tag in.”

Alison chimed in, “So I was like, aw, she’s a good one, she’s a Keeper, and we became really good friends … We’ve been inseparable since that day 17 years ago.”
Amusingly, Alison explained that she even honeymooned with Jo.
The couple decided to launch their Curves and Couture boutique back in 2012 after spotting a huge gap in the market.
Alison explained: “I got married in 1990 and was a plus-size bride with no choice but I blamed that day and age.
“Fast forward to 2012, I was shopping with someone who was a size 22 and was amazed at the lack of choice and comments like ‘sorry we don’t have absolutely anything in your size, we have to order it’. So I was like, ‘This is ridiculous, I could do a better job than that'”.

“I was pretty spontaneous, didn’t have a budget, no space or anything, but I just said to my best friend ‘let’s do it’ and we did it.
Throughout their many years of friendship, Alison and Jo have “always spoken as friends about our own experiences shopping for wedding dresses, and when this opportunity arose, I quit my full-time job and Jo quit her law school and decided we needed ours.” Pursue your dream and do it now.”

The series, which premiered in India earlier this month, has 20 episodes in its first season and 30 in its second. Each episode lasts 30 minutes and features the story of a new bride. โEach bride brings a different story and we are touched by all of them. There was a bride who insisted on using latex fabric for her wedding dress. While the idea was frowned upon by her family, our approach was different. As experts in bridal dowry, we believe that we are not one to spoil bridal dreams. If the bride wants something, we make sure we find a way to make her happy,” says Joe, adding that the criteria for finding the perfect dress on the show are open-minded, headstrong, honest and to be realistic budget.
โWith the show, we aim to follow the bride’s journey from the moment she chooses her dress, to the fitting, and through her wedding day as we dress her. We want to experience the shift in confidence as our client goes through the most important day of her life,โ adds Alison. As for the one piece of advice they give to every bride before her wedding day, they say to “keep your head up and own the room.”
