Like when he declared himself a Thatcherite at the height of his fame and said in a television interview: “Why would anyone want a Mini when they could afford a Ferrari?”

“And a Corvette and a Range Rover at the same time, but I wasn’t stupid or crazy about cars. Airplanes were more my thing. I had three or four. And I bought a nice house.”
With nothing inside.
“I had a kettle and deep fryer because I only ever ate fries. Oh, and an inflatable dingy in the living room with a motor attached. It was raining when I bought it, so I blew it up inside to see what it looked like and it ended up being my sofa.”
My goodness. Was it a bit disappointing for the inevitable groupies when they came back?
‘Yes! The whole place reeked of fries and I’m not very good at chatting up people so nobody stayed very long.” There were a lot of girls though. Stow in his tour bus, climb 25 meter walls to get to concerts, clog his dressing room. “I’ve never been a female human, but it was crazy.”

It wasn’t all screaming fans. A guy sent him a sharp bullet that read, “I was going to kill you at Wembley ’81 but I was having so much fun I decided to do it another day.” (“How brilliant is that?! “).
Another threatened to kidnap his mother (“She was under police protection for a few months”), and a petrol bomb was found under his father’s car (“You must have thought it was mine”).
And then, at the age of 21, after a sell-out run at Wembley and £6million in the bank, he retired and invested his money in a cafe and a record label. He lost everything.
“I didn’t know anything about cafes or record companies.”
Suddenly he was over £650,000 in debt and was deeply uncool in the early 1990s.
“I was full of self-doubt – one day, in a panic, I erased 18 months of work. There’s a loss of self-esteem, if you’ve been successful then you’re not. “It wasn’t helped by the fact that he refused to trade his old hits. “I don’t do nostalgia and never have, which is a constant struggle with my fans,” he says.
“My attitude has always been, ‘I go where I go, you can come with me or not. And if you want to hear all the old stuff that I’m not so proud of, stay home and listen to your records.’ ‘
And then along came Gemma. She was a total Numanoid — a groupie who had been yelling at his concerts since he was 11 and wrote to Jim’ll Fix It to ask Jimmy Savile to “fix” their wedding.
“She’s the most amazing woman. She’s pretty, but she doesn’t believe it. She has her lips made and her ears pinned back. She had her breasts small and large. She just had a face lift, she still has her stitches in. It never ends!
“She has body dysmorphia, so the slightest lack of symmetry for her is a massive carbuncle on her face.
“But she’s brilliant and from the moment I met her everything got better. And her brother has Asperger’s too, so she knew what was going on and how to deal with me.”
There doesn’t seem to be much wrong with him, but apparently he anathemas to small talk. He likes to talk about being kicked out of the Kenny Everett Christmas Show in 1980 by his hero David Bowie.

“I loved Bowie more than anything, adored him. I was so excited to be on the same show as him. But he took one look at me in the wings where I was watching and had me kicked out of the building.
“I don’t know why.” He also comments on his more eclectic outfits: “There was an awful Mad Max outfit—all leather and metal rods. I looked like I just got out of a gay club. And a white suit and a red Dickie bow still haunt me.”
And about the agony of five hair transplants: “It hurt like hell then, but now it’s better. I don’t know what Wayne Rooney had, but with his money he could have had the best hair in the world.”
And how, having previously avoided alcohol and drugs, he has recently embraced alcohol.
“The first time I got drunk was in 2000 and that was by accident, in Mexico. It tasted just like Red Bull, but it was blue and contained vodka. I was totally drunk and I loved it.
“I’m making it up to you now – I really like being drunk, but I hate alcohol. So I down a triple whiskey and wash it down with coke to get rid of the taste.”
He just goes on and on, about his East Sussex home, which is fuchsia inside and out, the annual Christmas lights (with nodding sheep and waving Santa Clauses), and how he never listens to music because it makes my head spin, I can’t focus’.
But it’s the topic of emigrating to California with Gemma and her three daughters, Raven, Persia and Echo, that really gets him excited.
The family plans to move into a house that looks like a castle, has two secret staircases, and an upper floor accessible through a hidden door in a bookshelf. It used to belong to the lead singer of an American band called The Disturbed.
He claims the move was partly weather related – “I’m tired of looking out the window at the rain and canceling things” – and partly a loss of confidence in the UK.
“I was always very proud of what we were as a country, but I’m not anymore. It’s hard to say anything without offending people and I have to be extra careful, but it’s all about greed and bureaucracy and damn health and safety telling you everything you can’t do anymore.
“And the riots last year! People who act like animals in the blink of an eye! Is there this big underlying discontent or just more s***** people than before?
