Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney on ‘American Rust’ and why small town stories resonate with audiences globally

The two top actors talk about starring in the TV adaptation of Philipp Meyer’s novel, interpreting their characters and more

The two top actors talk about starring in the TV adaptation of Philipp Meyer’s novel, interpreting their characters and more

It’s from former FBI Director James Comey’s essay in the political thriller The Comey Rule, while she still deserves plaudits for her role in relationship drama The Affair.

Two of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors, Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney, are now teaming up to star in American Rust, the television adaptation of Philipp Meyer’s acclaimed novel.

Set in a town in Pennsylvania’s Rust Belt, the series follows the life of complicated Police Chief Del Harris as he faces a series of difficult decisions when the son of the woman he loves is framed for murder. Created by acclaimed screenwriter Dan Futterman, American Rust is also the latest addition to the burgeoning roster of successful shows set in small town America and following the life and drama within a tight-knit community.

Filled with mutual admiration and respect for one another, Jeff and Maura share with us their experiences filming the highly anticipated drama, how their stage and theater background comes into play, and the almost doomed romance their characters share on the show.

Excerpts from an interview:

Mr. Daniels, given that your early days of growing up took place in a similar setting, was it easier to resonate with the Del Harris character?

Jeff: I’m one of those guys on the show; I used to grow up in a small town and now I’ve moved back to a small town and my family is growing up there. I was a working class guy and some things on the show ring true and familiar. Sometimes these types of characters are oversimplified or dumbed down. But in the book and series, they’re portrayed as complicated people…good people who have some bad luck and are trying to break free after their dreams don’t come true.

But just because they’re down and out of money doesn’t mean they’re bad. My character deals with many things including a broken heart and he is also a police chief who tries to solve many things and works 60-70 hours without sleeping.

I’ve never played against someone going through what they’re going through before, so it was a wonderful challenge.

American Rust’s subtext takes us through issues that plague rural America, such as drugs, poverty and homelessness… what was it like shooting in locations that also portrayed these issues?

Jeff: Such issues or the opioid issue are not specific to Southwest Pennsylvania or this belt. And not just in rural America, but also in the cities. It’s in the news all the time and never ends.

Jeff Daniels as Del Harris in a still from the series

There are all these places left behind by the steel industry; only giants of factories and mills now rusted. We shot in places like this that hadn’t been used in decades and I could imagine the heat and the people who worked there years ago.

Maura, your earlier project The Affair, which was a smash hit worldwide, was set in a small hamlet. We’ve seen other current shows like Mare of Easttown, also set in a small town, resonate with audiences as well. Here comes American Rust…is this a pattern that’s popular now?

Maura : That’s such an interesting question! I suppose that’s because people who live in small towns are no less complicated than people in bigger places. It’s also an effective storytelling tool for telling a story in a small town where everyone knows each other’s business and it’s harder to remain anonymous.

Jeff: I agree. Not everyone is from New York or L.A., are they? People from all over the world can identify with these characters as they consider them identifiable. It’s not like looking at Downtown Abbey or anything like that, which is far from who you are.

Their characters share an intriguing, almost doomed relationship throughout the series. How did you interpret that?

Maura: You know, the last role I played started as this wealthy woman whose parents and husband had always taken care of her and who later had to figure out how to be independent.

With American Rust, it’s the other way around. No one has taken care of her before, and she is trying to understand how to live in this world and how to trust and love people.

A still from “American Rust”

Jeff: To me, their relationship is like what you find in one of those airport romance novels. Desperate for a relationship with her, he goes all out, but she breaks his heart. But they’re both still in each other’s lives, and later she opens up to him. They finally see themselves falling in love… but what they do is not what lovers do. That’s the beauty of the book and the writing on the show. It’s a romance that turns dark.

You are both known for your work in film, television and theatre. You balance everything beautifully, but what is more challenging or more interesting?

Jeff: Well, they’re all tough. Be it the stage and eight shows a week or night shoots for a show or a movie where you have to get it right on the first or second take. But I still like the challenge, and I find it both dangerous and exciting – at this time in my career – to use and feed off the other actor.

Maura : I’ve been a television actress all my life, but I found experimental theater quite late in life and now work with a company in New York. And you know, being on stage and doing that is like no other feeling. I would like to explore that further.

Finally, what is your best memory of starting American Rust?

Jeff: Once (the script of) all the episodes came in, and I saw what happens in the last two; It’s something I’ve never tried before and I can’t believe I’m doing what I’m doing in episode nine! I can’t tell you what it is now. (laughs)

Maura: Well, we started filming for the show, then COVID happened; so we stopped and started again. The second time I read the script, I really thought, ‘Oh my God!’ That’s when I realized how good it really was.

Also, throughout the series, we watch these people lose things, especially their freedom. But what they’re going to do to get it back, and how far they’re going to go to get it, I found very interesting.

Maura Tierney

American actress

Maura Therese Tierney (born February 3, 1965)[2] is an American film, stage, and television actress. She is best known for her roles as Lisa Miller on the sitcom NewsRadio (1995–1999), Abby Lockhart on the medical drama ER (1999–2009), and Helen Solloway on the mystery drama The Affair (2014–2019), the last of which she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or TV Movie.

Tierney has appeared in numerous films including Primal Fear (1996), Liar Liar (1997), Primary Colors (1998), Forces of Nature (1999), Insomnia (2002), Semi-Pro (2008), Baby Mama (2008) , Handsome Boy (2018) and The Report (2019).

Early life[edit]

Tierney was born and raised in the Hyde Park[3] neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, the eldest of three children into an Irish-American Catholic family.[4] Her mother, Pat (née James), is a real estate agent, while her father, the late Joseph M. Tierney, was a prominent Boston politician who served on the Boston City Council for 15 years.[5]

Tierney attended Mount Alvernia Academy Elementary School and Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, Massachusetts, where she studied acting, which led to her appearance at the Boston Globe Drama Festival. After graduating, she attended New York University, where she first studied dance and then acting.[6]

Career [edit]

After appearing in several plays, Tierney moved to Los Angeles in 1987 and earned her big break with a role in Disney’s TV movie Student Exchange.[7] Tierney’s first starring role in a film was in a low-budget independent film called Dead Women in Lingerie, which was shot in 24 days.

Tierney has had a number of small roles in film and television, and a starring role in 704 Hauser, a short-lived 1994 spin-off of All in the Family. She first garnered regular national attention with her starring role on the sitcom NewsRadio from 1995-1999. While part of the NewsRadio cast, she also starred in several hit films of the late 1990s and early 2000s, including Primal Fear, Liar Liar, Primary Colors, Forces of Nature and Welcome to Mooseport.

After NewsRadio was cancelled, Tierney decided not to star in another sitcom:

[When] NewsRadio was cancelled, (…) I thought there probably won’t be anything like [that show] for me again… So when ER called (…) that was a way to stay on [television] that would be interesting for me.[9]

From 1999 to 2008, Tierney played nurse practitioner Abigail “Abby” Lockhart on ER, a character who began as a cameo in November 1999 and then expanded to a regular full-time role as an ER nurse in February 2000 and later after graduating from medical school, Physician. She was reunited with her NewsRadio co-star Khandi Alexander, who also had a recurring role on ER at the time. Within a year, her work on ER earned her an Emmy nomination, recognition she attributes to a “juicy” story arc in which Sally Field plays Lockhart’s mother, Maggie Wyczenski, who suffers from bipolar disorder.[7]

Tierney confirmed in April 2008 that she would be leaving ER shortly after the start of the show’s fifteenth season. In October 2008, she made her final regular appearance on the show after nearly 10 seasons on the show. She returned to have a cameo in another episode later in 2009 towards the end of the final season.

Tierney in 2015

Tierney’s best-known film while he was part of the ER cast was the 2002 film Insomnia, which was directed by Christopher Nolan. She also starred in Scotland, Pennsylvania that same year, portraying a Lady Macbeth-esque character written especially for her by Billy Morrissette, her then-husband. She was praised by critics for her performance. She also collaborated with NewsRadio writer Joe Furey for a special “Working with Joe Furey” feature on Furey’s film Love and Support.

In 2004, Tierney won the Season 2 tournament of Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown against Lauren Graham, who guest-starred on NewsRadio Season 4. Tierney returned to the stage in May 2006 with an appearance opposite Eric McCormack in the Off-Broadway premiere of Some Girl(s).[10] She also appeared in the 2008 films Semi-Pro, Baby Mama, The Go-Getter, and Finding Amanda. Tierney also played the role of Laurel in the Off-Broadway play Three Changes with Dylan McDermott from September 16 to October 4, 2008 [11].

Tierney returned to television, playing recurring character Kelly McPhee in the final season of the FX series Rescue Me in 2009 and 2011. She replaced Joely Richardson as the female lead of the 2010 ABC television series The Whole Truth after Richardson left to spend more time with her family. Tierney’s role on the show, a legal drama produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, marked her return to television after recovering from breast surgery and cancer treatments. ABC canceled The Whole Truth after four episodes due to low ratings.[14]

In 2010, Tierney became a member of the New York City-based experimental theater company The Wooster Group.[15] She appeared with Frances McDormand in the Wooster Group’s 2010 revival of North Atlantic, directed by Elizabeth LeCompte. From 2016 to 2019, she played feminist Germaine Greer in The Town Hall Affair, also directed by LeCompte. Tierney himself came up with the idea for this play, which emulates a violent debate on women’s liberation that Norman Mailer organized in 1971 with prominent feminists.[16]

In February 2011, Tierney made her Gate Theater debut in the Dublin premiere of Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage (translation by Christopher Hampton) opposite Ardal O’Hanlon. Also in 2011, Tierney appeared in an episode of The Office (S8E9: “Mrs. California”) as Robert California’s wife.

In September 2012, Tierney began a recurring role on the CBS legal drama The Good Wife, playing Maddie Hayward.[18] The role included scenes with the show’s lead character, Alicia Florrick, played by Julianna Margulies; The two actors had previously worked together on ER, both Margulies and Tierney had previously starred on that show. In 2013, Tierney joined the cast of Showtime’s The Affair,[20] in which she played Helen Solloway, for which she won a Golden Globe Award in 2016.[21]

In 2018, Tierney co-starred with Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet in the dark family drama Beautiful Boy, based on David Sheff’s memoir of the same name.[22] In 2019, Tierney appeared in The Report as “an intense, dedicated, somewhat vengeful counterterrorism expert who is determined to get behind any program that promises to obtain the intelligence that will prevent another attack.”[23]

In 2019, Tierney originated the lead role of Elizabeth in the West Coast premiere of Jen Silverman’s play Witch at the Geffen Playhouse, directed by Marti Lyons.

In March 2020, Tierney joined the cast of Showtime’s American Rust.

In October 2020, Tierney joined the cast of Showtime’s Your Honor.[26]

Personal life[edit]

Tierney married actor and director Billy Morrissette on February 1, 1993, two days before her 28th birthday, after the two met on the set of an unaired television series. She filed for divorce in 2006 due to irreconcilable differences.

On February 1, 2009, Tierney officiated at the wedding of her friend and former ER co-star Parminder Nagra to photographer James Stenson.

Tierney underwent surgery in 2009 to remove a tumor from her breast. She had been cast in Parenthood, but scheduling conflicts with her cancer treatments caused her to leave and Lauren Graham replaced her. Tierney completed treatment and returned to work in a stage play in 2010.[31]

In 2018, Tierney was hit by a car while cycling and thrown to the ground. Although she was taken away in an ambulance wearing a neck brace, she was later discharged from the hospital “without major injuries.”[32]
