Meredith Vieira Remade Her Career Midway Through

Meredith Vieira remade her career halfway between being a journalist, TV presenter to deliver the inaugural address

Meredith Vieira is compelling and candid proof that two-strokes exist in American life.

Explaining why, as a mother, she left her career as a news journalist to become the first anchor and co-anchor of ABC-TV’s The View in 1997, she once confessed: “When I realized I was a reporter, I didn’t want to report because it required a tremendous amount of travel, no one was too keen on having me work for them. I had to reinvent myself.”

As necessity is the mother of reinvention, Vieira has hosted The View for nine years, guiding her co-stars through conversations on contemporary issues big and small. She also hosted the syndicated version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and 11 seasons on the game show earned her 2 of her 14 Emmys. She currently hosts a nationally syndicated daytime talk show of the same name.

Vieira will continue her speaking career by speaking at BU’s 142nd inauguration on May 17, where she will be awarded an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters. She won’t be handing out prize money to BU’s graduates (the more than $75 million she gave away during her millionaire run would add up to more than $21,400 for each graduate if she were able to, at Nickerson Field to be similarly generous). However, she promises to outline how the unfolding of her own life offers lessons that can help her listeners move forward in the rest of their lives.

“Everyone is looking for success, but how do you know when you’ve found it?” she asks rhetorically. “Though they may not realize it, BU graduates have learned more about what really matters in the last four years than many people have in their lives. But there is still room for growth. So watch out for the duck and the shark.” (Don’t ask—you’ll have to listen to the speech. “How’s that for a joke?” she says.)

Vieira adds that she feels “incredibly humiliated” to have been selected for the honorary doctorate, “but not so humiliated that I haven’t told my husband, Richard, that he needs to start referring to me as Doctor Vieira. He immediately vomited a little.”

Her performance provides some connection to the past: Katie Couric (Hon.’11), who replaced Vieira as co-host of NBC’s Today in 2006, gave BU’s opening address in 2011.

Born and raised in Rhode Island to Portuguese-American parents, Vieira graduated magna cum laude from Tufts in 1975 and completed her broadcasting experience at a radio station in Worcester, Mass., and a local television station in Providence before she moved to WCBS-TV in New York. She rose to national prominence on CBS’s West 57th and 60 Minutes in the mid and late 1980s. She later joined ABC, first as a journalist and then as the host of The View, until becoming a co-host today. Although she resigned from the anchor desk in 2011, she remains an NBC correspondent. Last year, she became the first woman to host NBC’s coverage of the Olympics and to lead the network’s coverage of the Sochi Winter Games. (She had previously covered three Olympics.)

Vieira is also an entrepreneur, having launched her YouTube channel LIVES with Meredith Vieira in 2013. Her online biography describes her role as driving “the conversation between and about women with a mix of deeply personal, informative and entertaining content centered around the authentic, funny and sometimes raw stories that make up our everyday lives.”

BU’s other honorary recipients this year are Trustee Allen Questrom (Questrom’64) and his wife, Kelli Questrom, whose record donation of $50 million to BU this spring will expand the Questrom School of Business, Doctor of Humane Letters ; Cornell Brooks (STH’87), President and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, who will be a high school speaker, JD; and jazz promoter, producer and Grammy winner George Wein (CAS’50), Doctor of Humane Letters.
