Neal Schon

American rock guitarist, songwriter and singer

musical artist

Neal George Joseph Schon (born February 27, 1954)[1] is an American rock guitarist, songwriter, and singer best known for his work with the bands Journey and Bad English. He was a member of the rock band Santana before forming Journey and was also a founding member of Hardline.

Schon was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame on August 23, 2013[2] and on April 7, 2017 as a member of Journey into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[3]

Early life and career[edit]

Neal George Joseph Schon was born at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma to Matthew and Barbara Schon. He is of German and Italian descent.[5][6] His father was a big band musician, arranger and composer and played and taught all reed instruments with an emphasis on jazz tenor saxophone; his mother was a big band singer.[7] Began playing the guitar at the age of 10.[8] He attended Aragon High School in San Mateo, California [8] and later dropped out to pursue his music career.

A fast learner, he joined Santana in 1971 at the age of 17.[1][8] Schon has said that he was asked by Eric Clapton to join Derek and the Dominos, but that he joined Santana instead and appeared on the Santana III and Caravanserai albums. According to Bobby Whitlock,

He’s a great guitarist. When he was a kid, his daddy took him to one of our shows… when Derek and the Dominoes did our American tour. And [his father] tried his best to convince Eric to let him play in our band. He didn’t have much to say, but he sat with us. And it just wasn’t right. He was a really talented young guitarist, early teens. His career happened anyway… without us, but we didn’t need a teenager in the band. I was only a few years away from being a teenager myself, so I knew what to expect. And his play was completely wrong for us. If Neal Schon was anywhere, he was backstage and I saw him. We always kept quiet, Eric didn’t have a wardrobe, it wasn’t like that, we carried our own cases and they only brought two guitars. When Eric broke a string, he changed his own strings on stage. We didn’t know who [Neal Schon] was, he showed up with his daddy. And twice. Like I said he’s had a great career anyway, if you’re that talented it’s going to happen. The bands he was with needed that way of playing… He did fine even without us. He didn’t need us and we didn’t need him. He was just one of many who wanted to play with us.[12]

Schon also played in the band Azteca. In 1973 he, Gregg Rolie and manager Herbie Herbert co-founded the Golden Gate Rhythm Section, later renamed Journey at the suggestion of roadie John Villaneuva. 13]

Schon’s guitar style is influenced by guitarists like B.B. King, Albert King, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Jimmy Page and Jimmy Green.

In addition to his nine solo albums and fourteen studio albums with Journey, Schön’s work also includes: two albums with keyboardist Jan Hammer, short-term collaborations with Sammy Hagar (HSAS and Planet Us) and Paul Rodgers, stints with Bad English (a supergroup with Jonathan Cain and Deen Castronovo by Journey and Cain’s former bandmates from Babys John Waite and Ricky Phillips) and Hardline (which also featured Castronovo). [citation needed] Even as Journey’s newest line-up plays to a still-loyal fan base, Schon has delved into side projects like Piranha Blues (1999); “Black Soup Cracker,” a funk outfit starring former Prince collaborators Rosie Gaines and Michael Bland; and Soul SirkUS with Jeff Scott Soto.

Schon can be heard on other albums, including three tracks on Michael Bolton’s The Hunger, with the Schon sound being best known on “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” -star band for the cult funk artist and Miles Davis’ ex-wife, Betty Davis. [Citation needed] In addition, Schon (along with then-Journey manager Herbie Herbert) also contributed to Lenny White’s 1977 album Big City, most notably the instrumental jam Und Wir Treffen wieder. [citation required]

On February 9, 2018, Schon played a charity show at The Independent in San Francisco benefiting North Bay Fire Relief. The recruited group consisted of former Journey drummer Deen Castronovo (who also sang some of the vocals), former Journey keyboardist Gregg Rolie, and The Dead Daisies bassist Marco Mendoza.

In 2019, Schon announced a tour titled Neal Schon’s Journey Through Time. The tour was to feature Castronovo, Rolie and Mendoza.[21]

He played the Star Spangled Banner on electric guitar for the opening game of the 2022 NBA Finals.[22]

guitars [edit]

His first guitar was an acoustic Stella, followed two years later by a Gibson ES-335. When the 335 was stolen he replaced it with a ’56 reissue Les Paul Goldtop which he used for many years. Schon has used Gibson guitars over the years, having also used Fender and Ovation guitars during Journey’s Departure tour. He had a signed limited edition Les Paul model called the Neal Schon Signature Model Custom Les Paul, which Gibson only made 35 of, according to the Gibson Custom website (80 according to Neal Schon’s website). He has previously used Godin guitars on his 1995 solo album Beyond the Thunder and more recently uses Paul Reed Smith guitars. By the late 1980s Schon (through Jackson Guitars and later Larrivee) was making and playing his own line of guitars. Simply named Already, about 200 of the Jackson-produced models were made.[26][better source needed]

As of 2008, Already currently prefers Xotic guitar pedals, a Vox Satriani model, and occasionally uses a Buddy Guy wah pedal.

Personal life[edit] [28] On December 15, 2013, Neal Schon married Michaele Salahi at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. A white tent (photo) was erected in the rotunda of the castle for this occasion.

In September 2011, Schon publicly confirmed that he was in a relationship with Michaele Salahi. The two said they dated years ago in the 1990s and were very happy together.[29][30]

On October 14, 2012, during a benefit concert at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore, Maryland, Schon proposed onstage to Salahi and offered her an 11.42-carat diamond oval engagement ring.

The couple married on December 15, 2013 in a live wedding ceremony held at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, California.[32] The marriage is Schon’s fifth and Salahi’s second.[33]

Schon has confirmed that he has tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears common in musicians who have toured extensively.[34]

Journey’s Neal Schon returns to Santana roots

Marco Della Cava

USA TODAY

BERKELEY, Calif. — Journey guitarist Neal Schon is preparing for a slew of summer concert dates at Fantasy Studios — with Steve Miller and Tower of Power — and can’t help but hammer out the band’s ’80s classics with boyish zeal. But he’s been doing some other gigs around the Bay Area lately that really take him back in time.

The 60-year-old Schon was in the studio with members of an early incarnation of Santana, specifically the line-up he joined in 1969 at the age of 15, shortly after that band made a splash in Woodstock. He says this group – which includes Carlos Santana, keyboardist Greg Rolie and drummer Michael Shrieve – has recorded nine original songs so far and hopes to regroup next fall to make five more, possibly followed by tour dates.

“I’ve been chasing this one (reunion) for so long because it takes me back to when I had my big break,” Schon says, noting that Santana was not just a bandleader but a mentor who ushered the teen into a string of world music “I was always his student. When we play together, I’m always respectful. It’s not a shootout.”

Schon says making the new music with the old band was “painless fun” and the result “sounds like an extension of the band’s third album (and Schon’s first, 1971’s Santana, featuring ‘No One to Depend On’ and “Everything’s Coming Our Way”). .

“I’d love if we called it Santana IV,” Schon says with a smile before returning to his Journey rehearsals. “That would really come full circle for me.”
