At age 14, he was elected student body president at Jackson High School. In 1973 he enrolled on a full scholarship to study football at the University of Minnesota. Beginning as the team’s quarterback, he distinguished himself during his four-year career at Gopher with an impressive career record.
Career Surprisingly, despite a distinguished collegiate career, no NFL team signed him for the professional game. He failed to make the 1977 NFL draft and was eventually signed as a fullback by the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent. He played on defensive reserve and as a special team player throughout 1977 and in the 1978 Super Bowl Championship. In the latter tournament, he led the team in interceptions. In 1979, the Steelers traded him to the San Francisco 49ers. INDIANAPOLIS — It took Chuck Pagano less than nine months to instill his fighter’s mentality and hopeful spirit in the Indianapolis Colts.
He will need both to survive the biggest battle of his life – leukemia.
In a somber news conference on Monday, the Colts announced their new coach had been hospitalized for cancer treatment and was unlikely to return to full coaching duties this season. He will be replaced on an interim basis by offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.
“He’ll be fine,” Arians said, his voice cracking as he recalled his own battle with prostate cancer in 2007. “I know him. He’s a fighter. He’s been through tough times in his life. As a cancer survivor, I know these first few days are really tough for you, but as he and I spoke yesterday, it’s only a matter of time.”
The news hit all corners of the team complex hard.
Team owner Jim Irsay, who began his career as a Colts ball boy in the early 1970s, said the only comparison he could come up with was Vince Lombardi’s cancer diagnosis in the summer of 1970.
New general manager Ryan Grigson stoically read his prepared notes and Arians fought back tears.
After practice, the players signed a recovery card that read, in part, “We’re in your corner 100 percent. Rest easy but we can’t wait to get our leader back.” The normally cheerful comments were replaced by worried looks and serious discussions about life – not football.
“When I first heard about it, my heart sank,” said cornerback Jerraud Powers. “You think of your family members or someone who is actually affected. But Chuck is going to fight this thing and he’s going to beat this thing, I have no doubt about that.”
It didn’t take long for the Colts to figure out how to honor the first-time head coach who reignited the excitement in the locker room and around town after the Colts’ horrendous 2-14 season a year ago.
“I asked Mr Irsay if we would leave the lights on in his office all the time until he came back and we will,” Arians said.
The news leaked publicly as players and assistant coaches returned to the team complex after the Colts’ farewell week and a day before Pagano’s 52nd birthday.
He was admitted to an Indianapolis hospital last Wednesday to begin treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia, a disease in which the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells that affect healthy blood cells. Symptoms may include weakness, weight loss, and easy bruising or bleeding.
Pagano’s doctor, Dr. Larry Cripe said the trainer will be treated with chemotherapy and drugs – a process that typically requires patients to spend four to five weeks in the hospital. Irsay said he expects Pagano to stay a little longer, six to eight weeks. Indy (1-2) hosts the Packers (2-2) on Sunday.
Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, the No. 2 draft pick behind Andrew Luck, wrote on Twitter: “Football is football. But life is more important. Sending prayers for Coach Chuck Pagano at this difficult time.
Chargers coach Norv Turner, who has known Pagano since 1984 when they were both on the Southern California team, echoed Griffin’s sentiments, acknowledging that Pagano’s younger brother John, the Chargers’ defensive coordinator, struggled with his emotions last week.
“You’re all wrapped up in losing a game against Atlanta and then you get a call on Wednesday morning that your brother has leukemia,” Turner said. “It puts things in perspective. John did a great job this week, incredible work, he did what he had to do and then got ready.
Indy officials asked fans to send cards through team headquarters but said Pagano could not receive flowers. He is kept in a “protective” environment where the air is filtered and hand washing is essential.
And until Irsay and other front office staff walked into the team briefing on Monday, the players had no idea anything was wrong.
“The goal of treatment is to cure the disease,” Cripe said, declining to discuss the survival rates of patients with this form of leukemia. “It means he’s returned to a fully functioning life, the life he worked so hard for, and he’s looking forward to leading the Colts to some Super Bowls.”
Cripe said Pagano’s wife, Tina, was by his bedside every night. Irsay said she was the one who urged him to see the doctor after noticing unusual bruising on his body.
With most players and coaches out of town over the weekend, Pagano, a father of three girls, notified Arians in a heartbreaking phone call on Sunday.
“When Chuck called me yesterday, I was floored. I was down at my house in Georgia down south and he was chatting like he always chats and then he drops the news about me,” Arian said, recalling struggling to drive home after the doctor had told him five years ago that he had cancer. “My first reaction was, how are you, how is Tina, how are the girls, will everything be alright?”
It was another blow to a team that has faced more than its fair share of adversity over the past decade.
Seven years ago, coach Tony Dungy’s then 18-year-old son James was found dead in an apartment in Tampa, Florida. The death was later ruled a suicide. “Why can’t we extend the season so he can come back?” Arians said.
Last year, after losing all-season Ironman Peyton Manning to multiple neck surgeries, one of preseason’s Super Bowl favorites was awful, ending with the No. 1 draft pick and the impetus to rebuild. Manning, the longtime face of the franchise, and a handful of other fan-favorites were released in March as the Colts embarked on a major rebuilding project — a project Pagano would oversee in the next big chapter in his family’s coaching legacy.
In addition to his brother’s stint with the Chargers, Pagano’s father, Sam, won three Colorado state championships as a high school coach but never took a college or professional job.
While the Colts tried to take a business-as-usual approach to Monday’s practice, nothing was the same. Even defenders seemed surprised that Arians cheered when they conceded turnovers.
Grigson and Arian were still trying to figure out how coaching duties would be handled in Pagano’s absence and the focus was increasingly on things far bigger than just football.
“I think aside from the death, that’s the worst news you’d want to hear,” Luck said. “We will do everything we can to honor what Coach Pagano is going through in honor of his fight, which is far more important than this kid’s game that we are playing.”
Generally, the Colts insist that Pagano will win this fight.
They just hope they can give him a special gift next week.
“I know that when you meet the team, when you meet the coaches, there’s nothing more than we want to get that Green Bay cue ball and have a winning cue ball and be able to take it to the hospital and put it in his to lay hands. ‘ Irsey said. “That is our goal.”
