Dion Pride clearly has his father’s talent. The son of the late Charley Pride gave an energetic rendition of his father’s song “Mountain of Love” during the CMT Giants: Charley Pride television special, which aired Wednesday night (Aug. 25).
Written and originally published by Harold Dorman in 1960, “Mountain of Love” became a #1 hit for Pride in early 1982 – its 26th country chart topper. The song is from Charley Sings Everybody’s Choice, which marked Pride’s first collaboration with producer Norro Wilson.
Backed by a large band that includes strings and several backing vocals, the younger Pride joins in on electric guitar as he grooves to the upbeat, retro-pop song. About halfway through the performance, he plays along with the band during an instrumental bridge.

“I knew from a young age that this was what I wanted to do,” Pride tells People of his own music career. “So I always chose [my father’s] brain. And most of the time my dad was basically like, ‘If you want the answers, here they are.’ And I took advantage of that the best I could. But honestly, he never brought home the star or fame part of his life.
In addition to Dion and his mother Rozene Pride, Charley’s wife of several decades, CMT Giants: Charley Pride included performances and tributes from Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Darius Rucker, Gladys Knight, Jimmie Allen, Lee Ann Womack, Luke Combs starring Robert Randolph and Reyna Roberts, Mickey Guyton, Wynonna Judd, Ronnie Milsap, Neal McCoy and Nolan Ryan. The 90-minute special also included clips and commentary from Pride, who died of COVID-19 in December aged 86.
“I didn’t know if we could get all these people together in one place. I just don’t know how often that happens or how often that will happen again,” Dion Pride reflects. “I don’t know if there are words to really describe how powerful it was to see these people with their careers and everything they came out to honor my family and my father.”
Pride has had a streak of 52 top 10 country hits over the course of several decades; His #1 hits included “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone”, “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'”, “I’d Rather Love You”, “I’ll Be Leaving Alone” and many more. He became country music’s first black superstar and the first black inductee of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
“My father was very humbled and grateful for all the doors that were opened to him throughout his life. But no matter how many accomplishments it brought him, it still doesn’t touch the man he was,” says Dion Pride. “He was a walking example for me that there are no excuses.” “If you live right and your character is right and you work hard, the pigmentation aspect doesn’t matter. It was a very valuable lesson for me to learn so early.”

Country Music Success On a trip to Nashville, Pride met Jack Johnson, who promised the musician a management deal. A year later, Pride returned to town to record a demo featuring the singles “The Snakes Crawl at Night” and “Atlantic Coastal Line.” The recording ended up in the hands of Chet Atkins, head of RCA Records, who immediately signed him to the label. Pride officially released “Snakes Crawl at Night – his first single You and Me” in January 1966, which propelled Pride to stardom and reached #9 on the US Country chart. Pride won a Grammy Award for the song in 1967. Two years later, Pride had its first No. 1 hit with “All I Have to Offer” (1969). The recognition he received from these early successes led to a long and promising career for Pride, which saw him become country music’s first African American superstar. His later hits include “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone” (1970) and “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'” (1971). Over the next 30 years, Pride recorded 36 No. 1 hits and saw four of its albums go platinum.
