Imam is one of four Democratic candidates hoping for their party’s nomination. Their main platform focuses on education.
We let the democratic hopeful take us to her favorite place in her district. She chose the University of Texas at Austin.
Imam says she owes a lot to UT Austin, and not just because education is her biggest platform.
The computer engineer used to run a non-profit organization that offered free training and education. It was founded in the basement of one of UT’s buildings that the university had donated.
“If it hadn’t been founded, I wouldn’t have joined it and grown it into a nonprofit with 4,000 members and we wouldn’t have helped thousands of people like we did,” she said. “And that made me realize that we need to do more, and that’s why I’m running.”
Recently, Spectrum News conducted a poll of potential voters, and the two biggest concerns they had were about the pandemic and inflation. We asked every candidate in District 37 the same questions.
1. Would you make changes to the federal government’s response to the pandemic if you were elected to Congress?
Imam: “We should have used DPA for every single area and all these different tools, not just for medicines and vaccines, but also for making N95 masks.”
2. What would you do in Congress to address the economic concerns of Texans in your district if you are elected?
Imam: “My main areas of focus are reducing health care costs by providing one paramedic for everyone and improving the quality of care by having more nurses or doctors. We must abolish student loans entirely and lower the cost of education.
3. What is the biggest problem in the district you are running for?
Imam: “The cost of housing and living in Austin. The taxes drive people away who could normally live in a very affordable area of Texas. I think that’s the biggest challenge for the people of Austin, Texas.”

Donna Imam announces run against Rep. Lloyd Doggett
Donna Imam, a computer engineer running for Congress in 2020, announced Monday that she is running for Congress in Texas’ 37th congressional district.
TX-37 is one of two new congressional seats granted to Texas after the redistribution.
It’s also the same seat that Rep. Lloyd Doggett is seeking, a left-leaning Austin Democrat who has served in Congress since 1995 and is not seeking re-election in the district he currently represents, TX-35.
In a press release, Imam said she has lived in the district for more than 15 years, where she has worked for Motorola, Dell and as president of a non-profit organization that provides free vocational education and training.
Imam ran against Republican Rep. John Carter in 2020, coming within 9 percentage points of his ouster after raising more than $1 million for the bid.
“Congress needs leadership in science and technology to drive the next generation of innovation,” Imam said in her announcement. “I will use my technical know-how to deliver solutions that work for all of us.”
