IndyStar

This is the first in a series.

Eddie Cheever contradicted a word used to describe him on Friday.

“I’m not fat,” he said quickly. “I will answer.”

In short, that sums up a fun hour-long lunch with the 1998 Indianapolis 500 champion.

Cheever almost never shied away from a topic, including deciding on dessert choices—for coffee, he chose two treats from Season 52, though he has expressed a preference for espresso.

The time with Cheever was a good start for IndyStars preparation for the 100th Indianapolis 500 on May 29th. Up until the historic green flag, The Star will visit as many of the 27 live winners of the race as possible, ideally at their homes.

Coffee and race memories are on the menu.

Cheever, who is married and lives in Carmel, became the appetizer for a five-month 500 celebration. The coming weeks will include time with the Ours in Albuquerque, N.M., visiting the half-dozen riders who live in South Florida, speaking with A.J. Foyt and Johnny Rutherford in Texas, even visiting Parnelli Jones and Danny Sullivan on the west coast.

Victory road trips to be sure.

Cheever couldn’t believe there were only 27 to interview.

“Wow!” he said.

Cheever’s win came in the third 500 of the then shared Indy Car picture. This Indy Racing League-sanctioned race didn’t feature the CART stars, but Cheever insists it won’t affect performance.

Forever he proudly wears an Indy 500 crown.

“It’s always the first thing (said) when I’m introduced,” he said. “Then it’s my name.”

Victory was almost not.

From 17th on the grid in the Team Cheever’s Rachel’s Potato Chips sponsored Dallara/Oldsmobile, the owner/driver was literally thrown into Turn 1 – photo shows then-rookie J.J. Yeley touched from behind – and that threw Cheever’s car to the side. Cheever hit the brakes so hard that he flattened the tires, requiring an immediate trip to the pit lane for replacement. He finished 32nd in a field of 33 cars.

During a later pit stop, Cheever misinterpreted the team’s signal to accelerate. The problem was that the tanker wasn’t done with his job and the movement of the car almost ripped the hose apart.

“(Chief Mechanic) Owen Snyder saved the day,” Cheever said, admitting his mistake. “I interpreted the gesture as ‘go’ and just as I heard the radio click, I stopped. Owen only ‘clicked’ when it was something important.”

At the checkered flag, Cheever led Buddy Lazier by 3.191 seconds, but it was the engine ticking away. Back at the store, Snyder said the crew found cracked engine parts. How the car was finished is almost inexplicable.

Cheever used the rubble to make Christmas decorations for the crew.

“Some days it’s just your day,” says Cheever. “That was our day.”

Indy didn’t owe Cheever anything, but he would see his share of despair at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

At the start of the 1995 race, at Turn 1, he caught a glimpse of a shadow approaching him from the inside. It was Stan Fox’s car that lost control and Cheever was caught in the violent impact with the wall that split Fox’s car in two.

“I jumped out of the car angry about what had just happened,” Cheever said. “I had all this energy going and when I got to (Fox’s) car everything was dissipated like turning off a blowtorch.”

Cheever was involved in the rescue to the point that he pulled the radio plugs out of Fox’s ears. Fox survived, but the massive head injury meant he was never the same. Fox died in a head-on car crash in New Zealand in 2000.

A year later, in the inaugural IRL season, Cheever was training with Team Menard’s reserve car after qualifying when he was asked to pit to give pole-winning teammate Scott Brayton a chance. Cheever was not pleased and left IMS shortly thereafter.

Within minutes, Cheever’s pager buzzed. Brayton had crashed and was taken to Methodist Hospital.

“I didn’t even know why the team told me, but I went there thinking I was making his life difficult for wrecking the car,” Cheever said.

Brayton’s father was standing in the hallway when Cheever arrived. Brayton had not survived.

“That never left me,” Cheever said.

Moments like this, along with memories of karting with his father who grew up in Italy, were part of Cheever’s emotional response to winning the 500 on his ninth start. So much was going through his head on the warm-up lap that he was unusually speechless on the winning track.

“When I (the car) stopped, I was empty,” he said. “I had this great urge to be alone, to find out what had just happened.”

Cheever retired from driving and shut down his IndyCar team mid-2006 season, but he’s still active in the sport as the founder and licensee of Coyote Cars — yes, named after A.J. Foyt, for whom Cheever drove in 1995. Coyote is a Charlotte-based company that manufactures Daytona Prototype sports car chassis. Ryan Hunter-Reay, Christian Fittipaldi and Scott Pruett are among the drivers testing Coyotes this weekend at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the upcoming Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Cheever, who turns 58 on Sunday, also spends a lot of time with his four children, including two younger ones, who live here. Cheever’s eldest daughter Estelle is married and recently moved to Singapore. Cheever’s son Eddie III, a 22-year-old racing driver named “E3”, lives in Rome.

Cheever covered a lot during the lunch break and said two-time 500 winner Arie Luyendyk was the best he’d faced at IMS.

“I’ve never seen anyone as comfortable in a corner as Arie,” Cheever said. “I always pictured him doing 250mph at Turn 1 with a smile on his face.”

One of the strangest things for Cheever is how different two major racing families – the Unsers and Andretti – can be in terms of achieving similarity in the 500’s Borg-Warner Trophy. Ours have nine, the Andretti’s have one.

Cheever asked Al Unser, one of Indy’s four-time winners, about it during a stopover in Albuquerque.

“It was one of the best afternoons I’ve spent racing,” said Cheever. “It was like talking to Ben Hogan about hitting a golf ball.”

Cheever also believes Juan Pablo Montoya — and not Helio Castroneves — has the best chance of joining Foyt, Unser and Rick Mears in Indy’s exclusive four-time winners club. Cheever marveled at the control Montoya had when he won the 500 last year, his second in three attempts.

Cheever said he’s just as proud to be the US-born driver with the most Formula 1 starts (132). That could be one of the reasons he only has one Indy-related item in his house: a painting showing him leaving his helmet and gloves on the Gasoline Alley workbench after winning the 500.

Cheever just recently brought the Baby Borg trophy home from his Daytona Beach, Fla., office, and he hasn’t unwrapped it yet.

“What do you think I do, take out and drink out of every day?” he asked.

Cheever doesn’t say that to be resolute; he just answers.
