National Football League Eric Weddle’s journey from NFL retirement to Super Bowl LVI on February 3 share facebook twitter reddit link

By Eric D Williams

FOX Sports NFL Writer

Minutes after his team’s Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers last week, Los Angeles Rams safety Eric Weddle soaked in the cold tub in the locker room, already preparing his 37-year-old ailing body for the biggest game of his 15 years before year-long NFL career.

Back to 23 days ago, and Weddle’s focus was coaching his son Gaige and his 12-year-old tackle football team, the Rancho Bernardo Broncos (they finished 11-1 and won the championship).

As well as coaching, Weddle and his wife Chanel had settled into a daily routine of driving their four children to their various sports and activities.

Weddle said he still lifted weights regularly and played basketball in San Diego to stay in shape and mentally balanced, but he hadn’t considered returning to the field.

“I’m still training like crazy,” he joked. “It’s just who I am.”

The Fox NFL Kickoff Crew Discusses Eric Weddle’s Return The FOX NFL Kickoff crew broke Eric Weddle’s return to the NFL after nearly three seasons before the Los Angeles Rams faced the Arizona Cardinals in the wild card round.

But after L.A.’s loss to the 49ers in the regular-season finals, Weddle received a call from Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who suggested the wild idea of a return to the NFL.

Shortly after, Weddle returned to the team he last played for in 2019 because the Rams didn’t have enough depth on defense. He proved he was up to the task by learning a new defensive scheme in two days so he could play fast and still drive traffic in L.A.’s high school.

“Listen, I’m playing house money, man,” Weddle told the Dave and Jeff Show podcast. “There’s no pressure on me. There is nothing. Everyone expected this to flop and I surpassed that – which I knew I would do because I love a challenge, I love proving people wrong.

“Ninety-nine percent of the world thought it wasn’t going to work and look where I’m at.”

So far, the return to the field has followed a Hollywood script for Weddle, including the Utah product leading the Rams in tackles with nine in L.A.’s 20-17 comeback win over San Francisco in the NFC title game.

“What he’s done, playing as many snaps as he has over the past few weeks is incredible,” Rams head coach Sean McVay told reporters this week. “It’s remarkable. But if there was anyone who could do it, it would be him. He’d be the first to tell you we can clean up a few things, but I thought he played a great game.”

dr David Chao agrees. Chao, a former Chargers team doctor and current NFL injury expert, said that because of the athleticism it takes to play in space, playing safe again at 37 is a lot harder than being a 40-year-old, the one on the left plays Andrew Whitworth or a 44-year-old quarterback like Tom Brady.

“I hoped for the best and rooted for him, but I admit I had my doubts,” Chao said. “Father time and the position he plays needs to change direction…when he was a player he always told me he was made of steel. And I know he’s tough as they come, but steel rusts.

“But he excelled. And I think the Rams were smart about using it because they use it in the box rather than in space.”

Chao said the key for Weddle over the next two weeks will be allowing his body to recover from a tough NFC championship game so he can be at his best for the Super Bowl.

“Steel rusts, but it doesn’t seem to have much,” Chao said. “I worked in Super Bowls, but it wasn’t my team. And I kept watching the magical healing powers of the extra week leading up to the Super Bowl. This will be very useful to Eric. I think any cumulative impact on Eric will be negated by the extension.”

So how did Morris — who coached Weddle in the 2007 Senior Bowl when he was a secondary coach for Tampa Bay — got Weddle back on the field after a two-year absence?

“He’s like, ‘You’re not fat and you’re not in shape, are you?'” Weddle said of their conversation. “When he said that, I knew what was coming next.”

Morris added, “It was an easy call and an easy transition to watch him throughout his potential Hall of Famer career. And it was a lot of fun to get the chance to coach him [again].

Before making a decision, however, Weddle spoke to Chanel and their four children at their home in Poway, north of San Diego, about a possible return to football.

Chanel’s answer? If anyone could, it was her husband.

When asked about Gaige’s reaction, Weddle said: “He basically ran and put all his Rams clothes on. He got very emotional. My son has a big heart. And he was just so happy for me.”

And so, with everyone agreeing, Weddle called McVay to let the Rams head coach know he was on board. After all, he still felt part of the Rams because he followed every snap of his former team throughout the regular season and reached out to McVay a few times a month to talk about the season.

“Physically I haven’t been there yet, but I feel like it,” Weddle said. “It’s given me a way of still being connected to the guys I’ve been close with – players and coaches – but also never feeling like I want to go back. And it was beautiful.

“But I’m not going to lie to you that there wasn’t a moment [when I wanted to be on the team]. The only moment was week 1 of my freshman year [in 2020] against Dallas where I saw everyone hugging after that huge Cowboys win. And that was the only moment in the last year and a half where I said, “Man, I wish I was there.” I wish I was there in the moment — the raw emotions, the attrition, and everything that adds up to a win contributes.

“You just can’t replicate that outside of football.”

Prior to this year’s postseason run with the Rams, Weddle hadn’t had much success in the playoffs. In his nine seasons with the Chargers and three seasons with the Ravens before joining the Rams, he made one appearance in the AFC championship game, with the Chargers in the 2007 postseason.

But he’s always been an intellectual thinker on the field, playing with anticipation and helping others play faster around him.

“It’s something that I personally think I needed and really wanted — another guy like that in our high school, even if it was just for the playoffs and this stretch that we’re trying to carry on,” said cornerback Jalen Ramsey by Rams All Pro. who thinks Weddle is the best security he has played with. “So I was super excited when he called me and said [going back] was a possibility and that he was thinking about it.

“We just have a lot of communication and we’re always on the same page. And that allows us to play the game within the game with each other based on our experience. We think alike and have the same vision on certain things.”

Weddle played 19 snaps in his first action against the Arizona Cardinals in the wildcard round, then a surprising 61 of 72 defensive snaps in his first win over Tom Brady in the Rams’ win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the divisional round.

In the NFC Championship, Weddle started and played all 51 defensive snaps against San Francisco. His impressive play included a critical tackle early in the fourth quarter for a 1-yard loss at the Los Angeles 44-yard line, which eventually led to a punt in San Francisco and gave the ball en route back to L.A. to the Rams, that tie the game.

“It was in that moment that I saw the look,” Weddle told 570 AM radio in Los Angeles. “I saw the run and shot that gap. It was just nice to do a few games for the boys and make sure we won that game.

“When it came down to it, those last three drives, the defense stepped up and took the opportunity. And what better way to earn our Super Bowl right than by beating the team that’s had our number for the last few years?”

After that game, Weddle said his body felt like it was in a car crash — a harsh reminder that he hadn’t trained for the physicality of an NFL season. But now he just has to be at his best for one game.

And if the Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium is the end – as he says – it’s been an impressive career for Weddle. He is a six-time Pro Bowler. He was a two-time first-team All-Pro and a three-time second-team All-Pro. He was named to the 2010 All-Decade Team and has 29 career interceptions and 9.5 career sacks.

“It’s amazing to be able to understand that and know that I don’t have to save myself for next season,” Weddle told AM 570 LA Sports. “I don’t have to save myself for the off-season. I didn’t have to save for the Super Bowl last week because I knew it wasn’t guaranteed, so I threw it in there and gave whatever I got.

“I have nothing left after that except to go back to doing what I did before. After this Super Bowl, I’ll move on and go back to my old life. And there will be no comebacks. There will be no playing another team, another game – no, no, no, no.”

Eric Weddle to become high school football coach after coming out of retirement to help Rams win Super Bowl

Eric Weddle made a surprise return to the NFL when he came out of retirement on Jan. 12 to join the Los Angeles Rams. By that point, L.A. had been hit by a series of injuries at his high school and called for the 37-year-old to have reassurance to help the team with a Super Bowl title run after already calling it a career post-2019 season . In addition to making a comeback, Weddle proved a key figure in that championship run, with a total of nine tackles in the NFC Championship and five tackles in Super Bowl LVI.

After the win over Cincinnati, Weddle – who tore his chest in the game – confirmed he was retiring from the league and “getting back into my day-to-day life.” Well, now we have some clarity on what that normal life will be like for the Super Bowl champion.

On Saturday, San Diego’s Rancho Bernardo High School announced that Weddle will lead the school’s football program at the end of the 2022 season. Weddle will join the team this season and then take the reins the following year. It’s unclear if Weddle has any aspirations of one day coaching in the NFL, but this is where he would begin that endeavor when he transitions to coaching.

Weddle is a former second-round pick for the then-San Diego Chargers in 2007 and spent eight seasons with the team before joining the Baltimore Ravens. He joined the Rams in 2019 before his initial retirement and naturally rejoined them this past postseason. The six-time Pro Bowler brings over a decade of NFL experience to this latest coaching venture and was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team, so these high schoolers will learn from someone who’s played at the highest level.
