Ekaterina “Katia” Alexandrovna Gordeeva (Russian: Екатерина Александровна Гордеева; born May 28, 1971)[1] is a Russian figure skater. Along with her husband, the late Sergei Grinkov, she was a 1988 and 1994 Olympic champion and four-time world champion (1986, 1987, 1989, 1990) in pair skating. After Grinkov’s death, Gordeeva continued to perform as a singles skater.

Early life[edit]

Gordeeva, often called “Katia”, was born in Moscow, Soviet Union (now Russia) to Elena Lvovna Gordeeva, a telegraph operator for TASS, and Alexander Alexeyevich Gordeev, a dancer with the Alexandrov Song and Dance Ensemble. Gordeeva said, “[My father] worked with me on movement very often when I was little.”[2] Gordeeva has a younger sister, Maria Alexandrovna Gordeeva (born 1975), who lives in Moscow.[3][ 4]

Gordeeva began figure skating at the age of four, when she entered the CSKA Moscow Children’s and Youth Sports School. She wore several pairs of socks in skates that were way too big because skates small enough for her feet were not available in the Soviet Union. She wasn’t a particularly strong jumper, and in August 1981[7] trainer Vladimir Zaharov paired 11-year-old Gordeeva with 15-year-old Sergei Grinkov. Because Grinkov frequently missed training, her trainer eventually insisted that Gordeeva be paired with someone else, but she declined. Instead, the two changed coaches.[8]

Gordeeva and Grinkov won the 1985 World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The following year, they won the first of their four world figure skating championships. They are one of the few doubles teams to win back-to-back junior and senior world titles. They successfully defended their world championship title in 1987. In November 1987, during a training session, Grinkov caught a blade on the ice and dropped Gordeeva on her forehead. She was hospitalized for a time, but they were still able to compete and win a gold medal at the 1988 Winter Olympics, which began the following February in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They remain the youngest doubles team to ever win Olympic gold. After a fall in their long program, they took silver at the 1988 World Championships but reclaimed the title in 1989 and 1990. They turned pro in the fall of 1990 and won their first professional world championship in 1991. They also won that title in 1992 and 1994.

Gordeeva and Grinkov won almost every competition they entered. In the 31 competitions whose results are known at the senior and professional levels, they have finished first 24 times and never come below second since winning their first senior world title. They are one of the few pairs teams in history to have successfully completed a quadruple twist lift in international competition.[11] At the 1987 World Championships, they handled the difficult element with ease. They also completed the element at the 1987 European Championships, but due to a problem with Grinkov’s boot strap and a misunderstanding about the rules (the referee signaled them to stop and went so far as to turn off their music, but they kept running). they were disqualified from this event.[11] They stopped performing the quad twist as it did not significantly improve their grades and made the extra physical effort unnecessary. Katia, in her book My Sergei: A Love Story, writes that this element caused her heart rate and blood pressure to rise to levels that alarmed the Soviet team’s doctors. “That summer we had learned a very difficult move called the quadruple split twist,” she wrote, “in which Sergei threw me in the air, I did a split, then locked my legs and did four twists before.” he caught me. We were the only couple to do this quadruple element and it was very strenuous – more strenuous than difficult, actually. Soviet doctors measured my pulse at over two hundred beats per minute when I did it.”[12]

By 1989, the skater partnership had evolved into a romantic relationship. They shared their first kiss on New Year’s Eve 1988 and married in April 1991. Their civil ceremony was April 20 and their religious ceremony was April 28. From November 1991 to April 1992 they toured with Stars on Ice for the first time. On September 11, 1992, their daughter Daria Sergeyevna Grinkova was born in Morristown, New Jersey. Shortly after Daria’s birth, Gordeeva resumed training for the new season of Stars on Ice, which premiered in November 1992 and lasted through the following April.

When a new ISU rule allowed professional skaters to regain their Olympic eligibility, Gordeeva and Grinkov decided to return to amateur competition for the 1993–94 season and compete in the Olympics. In 1994 the pair won their second Olympic gold medal in Lillehammer, Oppland, Norway.[13]

After the Olympics, the couple returned to professional skating and moved to Simsbury, Connecticut. During the 1994/95 season they toured with Stars on Ice, this time headlining. That year, Gordeeva was named one of the “50 Most Beautiful People” by People Magazine. That summer, Gordeeva and Grinkov were selected for induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.

They planned to return to Stars on Ice with the tour for its fourth season. On November 20, 1995, while the pair were rehearsing in Lake Placid, New York for the opening night of their upcoming tour, Grinkov collapsed on the ice and died of a massive heart attack at the age of 28. Doctors later determined that he suffered from a congenital heart defect that caused his death.[13]

Arguably the most influential, celebrated and highly decorated doubles team in the history of the sport is considered by many to be the greatest doubles team to ever walk the ice.[17] They are often referred to simply as “G&G”.[18] They were known for the quality of their basic skating technique: “Grinkov and Gordeeva had something special that was easier to appreciate personally. They made no noise while skating. They moved so fluidly that their skates whispered across the ice, not scraping it.”[19]

Solo career[edit]

In February 1996, Gordeeva returned to the ice, this time as a soloist.[20] Her first performance was a tribute to her late husband[13] running to the “Adagietto” part of Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 5”. The number has only been performed publicly twice, first at a preview at Minto Skating Club in Ottawa, Ontario [citation needed] and then on February 27, 1996 in a televised tribute to Grinkov entitled “Celebration of a Life” [17 ] in which numerous skating luminaries took part. Gordeeva has said that she felt like she went ice skating with Sergei that night, that she was “doubly strong” because she felt him with her. That same year, with the help of author E.M. Swift, she told her story in a book called My Sergei: A Love Story.[6] In February 1998, CBS aired a docudrama of the same name based on the book. In April 1998 she published a second book entitled A Letter for Daria. In 1998 she told an interviewer, “My life of great skating and skating with him is over…I’m not trying to go to the Olympics now. I’m taking skating for a job.”[21]

Gordeeva returned to Stars on Ice as a solo skater in 1996 and toured with the show every year until 2000, when she took time off in June 2001 to give birth to another daughter, Elizaveta Ilinichna Kulik. Gordeeva has returned as a guest star many times but has never returned to tour full-time. In addition to tours and shows, Gordeeva successfully competed as a professional solo skater, taking second place at the World Professional Championships (1997). She stopped competing in 2000, but continues to perform in professional skating tours, shows, and competitions. Although she never returned to pairs skating as a full-time occupation, she has performed pair elements on many shows over the years with partners such as Artur Dmitriev, Anton Sikharulidze, David Pelletier and John Zimmerman. For the 1998–1999 season of Stars on Ice, she and fellow Russians Ilia Kulik, Elena Bechke and Denis Petrov performed a quartet that showcased their pairing skills, and in 1999–2000 she and Kulik ran a romantic duet while on tour.

Gordeeva has signed several endorsement deals, the most notable of which was with Target, resulting in two perfumes (“Katia” and “Katia Sport”) sold through Target stores. Gordeeva and her daughter Daria appeared in the 1997 vacation film Snowden on Ice as part of the CBS Sports Special; Gordeeva appeared in the 1998 sequel to Snowden’s Raggedy Ann and Andy Holiday Show. She has represented Rolex and also appeared in a Got Milk? film with Daria. together[24]

In 2001, she was the subject of a Lenox character called “Katia’s Celebration of Life”, which depicts her doing a relaxed spin in the tribute she ran for Grinkov. During that show, 2007 became the mother-daughter duo became a trio when Gordeeva’s younger daughter Liza joined them and all three ran together to “Homesick” which was performed live by The Cheetah Girls. All three have been hobby skaters together since 2007.

In 2007, Gordeeva starred in Skate for the Heart, a show aimed at raising awareness about heart disease. She skated in honor of Grinkov. Gordeeva briefly returned to pair skating in the 2008–09 season when she took part in a Russian reality television show called Ice Age 2, a figure skating version of Dancing with the Stars. She was paired with Russian actor Egor Beroev and they won the show. During the taping of Ice Age 2, she flew from Russia to the United States to direct Skate for the Heart a second time. She dedicated a number to her father, Alexander Gordeev, who died of a heart attack in 2008. In the November 22, 2010 final, she and Bure won the competition. Gordeeva returned to Stars on Ice in November 2010 for the 25th Anniversary Tour.

My Sergei: A Love Story was written by Gordeeva with Sports Illustrated writer E.M. Swift and published in 1996. Gordeeva’s account of her years with Grinkov topped the New York Times bestseller list[41] and includes many black-and-white and color documents, photos from Gordeeva and Grinkov’s personal collection, and publicity photos from their various touring groups, such as Stars On Ice. A TV movie version of My Sergei was also made, directed by Rob Dustin. Starring Russian couple Elena Berezhnaya/Anton Sikharulidze, it included interviews with family and friends, as well as archived skating footage.

With her former partner and late husband, the magnificent Sergei Grinkov, Katia first seduced the world with her elegance. In their thirteen years together, they have defined pair skating and taken the sport to new heights artistically and athletically. Born on May 28, 1971 to Elena and Alexander Gordeev, Katia’s life seemed blessed from the start. Her father was a dancer with the Moiseev Dance Company, a world-famous folk dance group. Perhaps it is from him that Katia derives her single-minded determination and graceful flair. Alexander instilled a remarkable work ethic in his daughter, which has served Katia well in her career. Even as a young girl, she took her education very seriously; In fact, she was the one who often had to raise her parents at 5 a.m., determined not to miss a second of the vital Ice Age. Although both her parents worked hard, her father danced in distant countries, and her mother worked 12-hour shifts for the Soviet news agency Tass, they spent restful holidays at their dacha, their summer home in the country north of Moscow. During their vacations, Katia’s dear Babushka and Diaka, her grandmother and grandfather, two influential people in her life, would come with them.

It didn’t take long for the CSKA to determine that Katia was better suited to the demands of pair skating. On one fateful day at the age of 11, she was mated to a slim, golden-haired boy named Sergei Grinkov, who was four years her senior. From that point on, the serious young girl and carefree, talented Grinkov formed a partnership that would define both her own life and the world of figure skating.

Three years later, after countless hours of rigorous training on and off the ice, Gordeeva and Grinkov teamed up with Marina Zueva, who would become their longtime choreographer and perhaps the most influential force in her skating career. Shortly after this partnership formed, the pair won the 1984 World Junior Championships in Colorado Springs. Two years later, in 1986 in Geneva, they won the World Championship on their first attempt, defeating the defending pair of champions Elena Volova and Oleg Vaesiliev.

Though this young couple’s achievements grew rapidly, their off-ice relationship slowed. The two spent little time together outside of their training, and while the playful Grinkov was constantly testing his authority and exploring life with a large group of friends, Katia’s existence was more isolated. Her eyes did not focus on those around her, but inward. Due to her relative youth (compared to the other skaters) and shyness, Katia found solace on the ice and in practice. Although Sergei would become the driving force in their partnership, Katia’s unwavering determination and remarkable work ethic were a major factor in the couple’s tremendous success. She focused almost exclusively on a single goal: Olympic champions in Calgary.

Gordeeva and Grinkov successfully defended their 1987 World Championship title in Cincinnati. After the World Cup, they toured North America in Champions on Ice and then set their sights on the Olympics. During training in November ’87, Sergei caught a blade on the ice and dropped Katia while holding her up. She landed on her forehead, forcing a brief hospital stay. Sergei quite often visited Katia during this period. From that point on, Sergei’s attention to his partner became more intimate, caring, and whenever he held Katia on the ice, it was like he would never let her go.

1988 was an exciting year for Katia. Things changed quickly, both on and off the ice. Her trip to Calgary was a success as she and Sergei won the gold medal at their first ever Olympics. But Katia felt increasingly lonely and isolated as her longing for Sergei developed without an outlet. Again she concentrated intensely on her training; but a stress fracture in her ankle limited even that distraction. Katia used her time off to learn English and eventually became her skating partner’s official translator. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Gordeeva and Grinkov went from partners to good friends to sweethearts, a transformation exquisitely marked by their first kiss on New Year’s Eve 1988.

Gordeeva and Grinkov won worlds again in the romantic city of Paris in 1989, but were so consumed by love that ice skating hardly seemed to matter anymore. For once, their time together off the ice was more important. After successfully defending the 1990 World Championship (fourth title), the pair turned pro in 1991. However, that year marked a more significant transition in their lives: on April 28, 1991, they were married.

The next few years brought more dramatic changes for Gordeeva and Grinkov as life became faster and more hectic. In addition to an increase in skating tours (Champions on Ice through North America, Russian All-Stars through South Africa), came a barrage of new responsibilities for the couple: simple financial and housing matters previously handled by the old Soviet regime. And on September 11, 1992 came the most precious responsibility of all, her daughter Daria. Though excited about parenthood, the couple had to support themselves, which meant more touring. During the 1991-1992 season, Gordeeva and Grinkov decided to take part in the Stars on Ice tour, the most prestigious figure skating production in the world. The three-month roadshow in sixty cities made traveling with their newborn virtually impossible, so they entrusted Katia’s mother to Daria’s care, a difficult but necessary decision for the young parents.

In 1994, Gordeeva and Grinkov took advantage of a new rule allowing professional skaters to be re-eligible to compete in the Olympics and made their way to Lillehammer. This time they won the gold for each other. The pair returned to the United States, forever cementing their historical importance in the sport of figure skating, and found permanent residence in Simsbury, Connecticut, near their new training facility.
