Foster Friess

American investment banker and political donor

Foster Stephen Friess (April 2, 1940 – May 27, 2021) was an American investment manager and prominent contributor to the Republican Party and Christian rights. He ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for governor of Wyoming in the 2018 election, losing to State Treasurer Mark Gordon in the primary.

In 1999, CNBC called Friess one of the “great investors of the century.”[1] In a 2001 article, BusinessWeek suggested that Friess “may be the longest surviving successful growth stock picker, having spent 36 years navigating the markets at his own firm since 1974.”

Personal life[edit]

Friess was born on April 2, 1940 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin to Ethel (Foster) and Albert Friess.[2] He grew up on a farm where his father was a cattle dealer.[3] As a student at Rice Lake High School, Friess was first in his class and a member of the basketball and track teams.[4]

A first-generation graduate student, Friess attended the University of Wisconsin (now the University of Wisconsin-Madison), where he earned a degree in business administration. As an undergraduate, he served as President of the Chi Phi Fraternity, enlisted in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, and was named one of the “Ten Most Outstanding Elderly Men”. In 1962 he married fellow student Lynnette Estes, with whom he had four children.[5] Friess was a born-again Christian.[6]

Personal style[edit]

Friess in his western outfit

Friess often joked about his wealth in public appearances, but at the same time drew attention to his financial situation.[7] In early 2020, he said on his website that his deal was worth $15 billion.[8] although he told a reporter in 2012 that he was not a billionaire.[9] It is estimated that his fortune at the time was in the hundreds of millions.[10] At an event celebrating Friess’ 70th birthday, he gave away $7.7 million to the guests’ favorite charities.[7] He usually wore a cowboy hat in public. He adopted the western image when he moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming in 1992. He said he made the move because Wyoming’s lack of an income tax helped him avoid “increasingly onerous” taxes in Pennsylvania. The progressive website ThinkProgress has labeled Friess a financier of Islamophobic campaigns,[11] while he has also made statements in support of gay rights, calling them a religious freedom issue.[12] He made some comments on the subject of birth control, stating that women should just take an aspirin between their knees instead of taking contraceptives.[13]

Career [edit]

After graduating from college, Friess trained as an infantry platoon commander and served as an intelligence officer for the 1st Guided Missile Brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas. In 1964 he began his investment career and joined the Brittingham family-controlled NYSE member firm in Wilmington, Delaware, eventually rising to Director of Research.[14][15]

In 1974, Friess and his wife formed their own investment management firm, Friess Associates, LLC. Although success was slow in its early years, the firm’s assets under management grew to over $15.7 billion. Forbes named the Brandywine Fund, a Friess Associates flagship that boasted an average annual gain of 20% in the decade through 1990, as one of the top performers of the decade.[16]

In 2001, Friess Associates partnered with Affiliated Managers Group (AMG), an asset management firm, to facilitate succession planning and distribute ownership among its affiliates. AMG acquired a controlling interest in Friess Associates in October 2001 and held a 70% interest as of September 2011. A broad group of Friess partners, including executives and researchers, held 20% of the shares, while the Friess family retained 10%. 17] The company was bought by its employees in 2013.[18]

Political activism[edit]

Excerpt from a pro-Santorum newspaper ad sponsored by Friess prior to the 2012 Wisconsin primary

Friess speaks at CPAC 2013

Friess was a longtime mega-donor to the Republican Party, giving millions of dollars to Republican and conservative causes,[19][20] particularly the Christian right.[21][22]

Friess donated $250,000 to Rick Santorum’s re-election campaign in 2006, and at least that amount went to the Republican Governors’ Association.[23] Friess largely funded Santorum’s unsuccessful campaign for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.[21] Friess was instrumental in keeping Santorum’s ailing campaign alive by funding a super PAC, the Red-White-Blue Fund, which ran TV commercials on behalf of Santorum, which was unable to run a TV campaign with its own funds.[ 24] According to campaign filings with the Federal Election Commission, Friess’ contributions to the Red, White and Blue Fund amounted to more than 40% of his total assets or $331,000 as of December 31, 2011. [25] [26]

After the 2012 New Hampshire Republican primary and before the South Carolina primary, Friess told Politico that he was “putting together a challenge grant to encourage other wealthy donors to donate to the Red, White, and Blue Funds … he said [ the fund] received a check for $1 million in New Hampshire the day after the vote.[27] The multi-million dollar donation was paid in four checks between November 2011 and January 2012.[26]

In addition to Santorum’s faith, pro-life stance, and restrictive foreign policy leanings, the ability to defeat incumbent President Barack Obama was an important part of Friess’ decision to support Santorum’s campaign.[28] Friess was reportedly considering major contributions to American Crossroads, the superpac founded by Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie and former George W. Bush White House strategist Karl Rove.

Friess also donated $100,000 to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to help thwart the Democratic recall in 2011. He reportedly invested more than $3 million in conservative commentator Tucker Carlson’s website The Daily Caller.[23] At one of the biannual, private seminars held by the Koch brothers in June 2011, Friess was recognized for donating over a million dollars to the Kochs’ political activities.[31]

During an interview with NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell on contraception, Friess said, “And this contraceptive, my God, it’s so — it’s so — cheap, you know, back in my day, they used Bayer aspirin for birth control. The girls said it between their knees and it wasn’t that expensive.”[26][32]

Friess was also an advisor to Turning Point USA, a conservative youth group, to which he gave seed money.[33]

In October 2017, Friess said he was reviewing a possible Senate nomination by challenging Wyoming Senator John Barrasso for the Republican nomination,[34] at the request of Steve Bannon.[35] In April 2018, however, he instead chose to enter the crowded Republican field to replace incumbent governor Matt Mead. Friess was defeated in the primary, finishing second behind State Treasurer Mark Gordon by 38,951 votes (33%) to 29,842 (25.3%).

Philanthropy[ edit ]

Friess and his wife ran the Friess Family Foundation, which they say includes support for Christian mobile medical services, sponsorship of Water Mission’s work to bring clean water to Malawi, and donations to relief and recovery efforts following natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina. the 2004 Indonesia tsunami and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.[36]

Friess sponsored a matching grants program to raise $2 million for relief efforts for the 2004 Indonesia tsunami and traveled to areas hardest hit by the earthquake and tsunami to meet with local church and organizational leaders to determine the best response efforts [37 ] He sponsored another matching grant for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, raising more than $4 million.[37]

He supported a YMCA development in Maryvale, Arizona along with several local mentoring and utility organizations.[38] He was the principal donor behind the Friess Family Community Campus, a $3.7 million complex outfitted with soccer, baseball, and softball fields and a running track at Rice Lake High School in his hometown.[39]

Friess also rose to prominence when news of his 70th birthday spread.[40] At the lavish event, he announced he would donate $70,000 to a charity nominated by his guests. He surprised his guests by giving each of their favorite charities $70,000, totaling over $7 million.[7] In addition, Friess was the principal donor to a classical Christian school, the Jackson Hole Classical Academy in Jackson, Wyoming.

Friess has won a number of awards for his religious work, including the 2012 Horatio Alger Award from the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans,[41] the Canterbury Medal from the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty,[42][43] the Adam Smith Award at Hillsdale College [44] the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award from the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation[45] the David R. Jones Award for Leadership in Philanthropy[46] and a Medal of Distinction from the University of Delaware[47]

According to his website, in 2016 Friess began supporting Rachel’s Challenge, a nonprofit founded in the name of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School massacre, by matching all donations up to $100,000.[48] Following the 2018 Parkland shooting, Friess gave a $2.5 million challenge grant to groups including the Sandy Hook Promise and Rachel’s Challenge in a USA Today op-ed.

Later life[edit]
