Gabby Petito’s parents coping with daughter’s death by trying to make difference with foundation in her name

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — This week has been two months since Gabby Petito’s body was found near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, just about a week after she was reported missing by family members who were concerned her fiancé had returned home without her from a cross-shore excursion.

Petito’s disappearance and death drew international attention, as well as a surge of support for the 22-year-old’s family members. On Tuesday, Petito’s family spoke exclusively to WFLA Now about the support they have received and what they are doing to mourn their beloved daughter.

“It’s hard. We’re still grieving and it’s going to be a long process, I know that. I think starting the foundation is a way we can grieve and get through this,” said Nichole Schmidt. “Some mornings wake up I get up, I want to save the world and I know I can’t, but I’m going to die trying. And that’s Gabby’s legacy.”

Schmidt joined WFLA Now from Long Island, where she and Petito’s stepfather, Jim Schmidt, live. Petito grew up on Long Island but moved to North Port about two years ago to live with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, and his family.

Petito’s father, Joe Petito, and stepmother, Tara Petito, also live in Florida and joined the call on Tuesday from their Vero Beach home.

“I cry every night. I stare at her pictures. So it was very difficult,” Tara Petito said of the grieving process. “I have a 13-year-old son who was very close to Gabby and he’s also having a very difficult time.”

Joe Petito said the family tried to stay focused and put their energy into the foundation they started in honor of their late daughter.

“That’s been our driving force lately and it’s going to do a lot of good things,” he said. “Doing that, staying focused, doing research — that’s what we’re doing to try and cope with it. Trying to make a difference.”

Since Gabby Petito’s death, social media users have flooded various platforms with messages about “Justice for Gabby”. Her parents said Tuesday Justice for Her is looking forward to making the world a better place.

“If we can save just one person – that would be justice,” Tara Petito said. “Just moving forward, that’s really what we’d like to do. To save — or help her story get there so people know we care.”

“If we can try to make that change, we’re going to try this. And that, to me, is justice — helping others,” Schmidt added. “It’s about the changes we can make. We cannot change the past, but we can change the future.”

The Gabby Petito Foundation was launched in late September, shortly after federal officials confirmed Petito’s death. Since the Petito and Schmidt families have been posting about the foundation, people from all over the world have contacted us to find out how they can get involved.

“We’ve put the foundation’s website up… there’s a donate button there – you can definitely click on that and donate… we’ll be planning more and more fundraisers for the foundation,” explained Joe Petito. “Remember, we’ve only been at this for 30 days. We’re still learning processes and things to make sure everything is done right. We will continue to try to fill in gaps and gaps where help is needed. The more we learn, the more we can help. The more we can help, the better it will be.”

Schmidt said the family met with experts from across the country to learn more about what changes to make after their daughter’s death. Joe Petito said they have spoken to animal shelters, the police, rescue teams, therapists and other professionals to identify what resources are most needed.

“To be able to fill that void with whatever we can do, that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to help other organizations with resources and raise awareness of the issues,” he said.

The parents added that the foundation also focuses on education.

“We work with people out there who work with prevention education. Trying to get it into schools would be our number one goal,” Schmidt said. “I think prevention education from a young age will help ensure that one day we will no longer need all of these shelters. We have to start while they are young and – unfortunately not in schools. And it has to be.”

She added that the family had been discussing potential national alert schemes for people aged 18 to 64.

“There is nothing for this age group. It would be just like the Amber Alert or the Silver Alert, but it’s a different age group,” she said. “We hope that we can bring that kind of change to missing people.”

Joe Petito noted that while he’s vocal and active on social media, he doesn’t want to be in the spotlight. He wants the spotlight to be on other people who are missing across the country.

“I want everyone to get the same kind of help that we got,” he said. “And if that’s what I need to do to get that out there and ask for help finding missing people, I certainly will.” I would be doing people a disservice if I didn’t. I want to make sure Gabby looks down and says, ‘I’m proud.'”

Killing of Gabby Petito

2021 killing of an American woman by her fiancé

Killing of Gabby Petito Location Bridger-Teton National Forest, Wyoming, USA Date of killing of Petito:

Uncertain day at the end of August 2021

(three to four weeks before the remains were discovered on September 19)

Laundry Suicide:

c. September 21, 2021[1] Attack Type Homicide by strangulation, homicide-suicide Deaths 2 (including perpetrator) Victim Gabrielle Venora Petito Perpetrator Brian Christopher Laundrie Motive unknown

In August 2021, Gabby Petito, an American, was killed by her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, while they were traveling around the United States together on a Van Life trip. The journey began on July 2nd, 2021 and was to last four months; However, Petito disappeared at the end of August.

After Petito went missing, Laundrie raised suspicions when he drove Petito’s van from Wyoming back to his parents’ home in North Port, Florida and refused to speak of their whereabouts. He was considered a person of interest in the case and an arrest warrant was issued for making withdrawals using Petito’s debit card. Laundrie left his Florida home on September 13 and was reported missing on September 17.

On September 19, Petito’s remains were found in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest. An autopsy revealed she was killed by manual strangulation. After a month of speculation about Laundrie’s whereabouts and an extensive search in the area around his Florida home, his skeletal remains were discovered Oct. 20 at Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. On November 23, it was announced that Laundrie died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.[2] The FBI later announced that Laundrie had admitted killing Petito in his notebook, which was found near his remains.[3]

The Petito case gained national attention due to the couple’s social media activities, police body camera footage, 9-1-1 call recordings and eyewitness accounts.

Gabi Petito

Gabrielle Venora Petito (March 19, 1999[4] – late August 2021) was born and raised in Blue Point, New York. She was the eldest of six siblings and half-siblings. In 2013, Petito and her stepbrothers appeared in a music video to raise awareness of gun violence in response to the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting. She graduated from Bayport-Blue Point High School in Bayport, New York, in 2017,[7] where she met Brian Christopher Laundrie.[8] From September 2017 to January 2019 she lived in Carolina Beach, North Carolina and worked as a hostess and in the kitchen at a restaurant in Wilmington. She applied to Cape Fear Community College but did not attend.[9]

In March 2019, Petito started dating Laundrie[10] and moved in with him and his parents in North Port, Florida. Petito and Laundrie worked at a Publix location in North Port, she as a pharmacy technician and he in the grocery department. Both Petito and Laundrie quit their jobs at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.[8][11]

In late 2019 and early 2020, the couple took an overland trip from upstate New York to California, visiting Las Vegas, Yosemite National Park, Pismo Beach, and other attractions.[7] In March 2020, Petito celebrated her 21st birthday in Nokomis, Florida.[7] She and Laundrie visited Sope Creek, Georgia in June 2020 and the two became engaged the following month.[12]

In December 2020, Petito bought a 2012 Ford Transit Connect van, which was converted into a camper, to take on her next cross-country trip.[13] She then worked fifty hours a week at Taco Bell[11] and as a nutritionist while Laundrie worked at an organic juice bar.[14] Petito documented her life and travels on social media sites, including YouTube and Instagram, where she described her interests as “art, yoga, and vegetables.”[7][8]

Disappear

Excursion

[15] Laundrie and Petito traveled in a white 2012 Ford Transit Connect similar to the one pictured here.

On June 17, 2021, Petito and Laundrie visited Blue Point, New York for their brother’s graduation ceremony. From there they set off on their journey on July 2, 2021 in the Ford Transit Connect van. During that month they visited Monument Rocks, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Mystic Hot Springs, and Canyonlands National Park.[7]

Domestic disturbance incident

On August 12, 2021, a witness called 9-1-1 and claimed that a couple, later identified as Laundrie and Petito, were fighting in front of the Moonflower Community Cooperative in Moab, Utah.[14] The caller told dispatchers that he saw a man hit a woman and after the two ran up and down the sidewalk, the man hit the woman again and then drove off.[16] Another witness described the incident to police, saying that Petito and Laundrie spoke “aggressively” to each other and that Petito “slapped him in the arm”. The witness said it appeared Laundrie tried to leave Petito and took her phone with her, before eventually climbing into the driver’s seat, swapping to the front passenger seat and asking, “Why do you have to be so mean?” before they drove off. [17]

Moab City Police Department (MCPD) officers identified the van that was driving erratically near the entrance to Arches National Park and conducted a traffic stop. They found Petito crying profusely in the passenger seat, where she told officers, captured on police bodycam footage:[18]

Yeah, I don’t know if I have a really bad OCD some days. I was just cleaning and tidying up, back at the… I apologized to him and said, “I’m sorry for being so mean,” because sometimes I have OCD and sometimes I can get really frustrated. Not mean to him. I just like, I’m just in my mood, I’m in a bad mood. And I just wanted to say that I’m sorry if I’m in a bad mood. I just… I had so much work to do on my computer this morning. …And I’ve just quit my job to travel across the country and I’m trying to start a blog. I have a blog. So I built my website. I was really stressed and he doesn’t really think I could do any of that, so we argued all morning and he wouldn’t let me in the car before then.[14][19]

Petito initially downplayed the physical altercation, but after the officer pointed out marks on her arm and face and told her to “just be honest,” she told him that Laundrie “kept telling me to shut up.” holding,” and “grabbed my face,” which had caused an injury.[20]

Laundrie told the officer:

I said let’s just take a breather and let’s not go anywhere, and just calm down for a minute, she got excited. And then she had her cell phone and she was trying to get the keys from me. I was just trying, I know I shouldn’t be pushing her. I was just trying to push her away to make her go, let’s take a minute and stand back and breathe and see she caught me on her cell phone.[14][21]

Petito told the officer that she hit Laundrie first and asked the officers not to separate them.[20] In their report, officials wrote:

At no point during my examination did Gabrielle stop crying, breathing heavily, or composing a sentence without having to wipe away tears, wipe her nose, or rub her knees with her hands… The man attempted to create distance by Gabby said to take a walk to calm down… Not wanting to be separated from the male, she started hitting him. He grabbed her face and pushed her back as she pushed on him and the van.[17]

Neither Petito nor Laundrie wanted to press charges over the incident, which police described as a nervous breakdown rather than domestic violence that would have required an arrest. Police separated the couple and arranged for Laundrie to spend the night at the Bowen Motel in Moab,[22] and Petito to stay in the van.[14]

The MCPD investigated whether or not its officers were handling the case in accordance with department guidelines. His police chief took a leave of absence during the investigation.[23][24][25]

Recently reported activities and sightings

On August 17, Laundrie flew from Salt Lake City to Tampa, Fla., leaving Petito to fend for himself. Petito stayed at a Fairfield Inn and Suites hotel near Salt Lake City International Airport for several days, according to staff, and checked in out on August 24.[16][26] Later, the Laundrie family lawyer explained that he made the trip “to get some items and empty and close the storage unit to save money as they were considering extending the road trip.”[27] Laundrie returned on 23 continue.[28]

Petito’s mother said she last spoke to her daughter on Aug. 25 and was told the couple were traveling from Utah to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. On August 25, the latest post on Petito’s Instagram account consisted of photos of herself taken in front of a butterfly mural outside of a restaurant in Ogden, Utah.

Eyewitness accounts from the couple afterwards were as follows:

A witness said she saw Laundrie and Petito together between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on August 27 at the Merry Piglets, a Tex-Mex restaurant in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. According to the witness, Laundrie had an argument with the manager, waitress and hostess, apparently over money, and was “aggressive”. The witness said she later saw Petito return to the restaurant, crying and apologizing for Laundrie’s behavior. Restaurant staff confirmed via Instagram that the couple was indeed in the restaurant.[30][31]

Another witness contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to report the activities and coordinates of a slow-moving white pickup truck and a “general” young white man who appeared on August 26, 27 and possibly near the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping area. 28. She posted a video of her observations on TikTok. According to the witness, an FBI agent said that her report on finding Petito’s body “put us in the right place.”[32]

A woman posted in a TikTok video that she and her boyfriend picked up Laundrie from an area near Colter Bay Village on August 29 after seeing him hitchhiking alone.[33] She reported that Laundrie “freaked out” when she learned they were going to Jackson Hole instead of Jackson, Wyoming, and the vehicle exited near Jackson Lake Dam at 6:09 p.m., less than thirty minutes after she was picked up had been. The witness thought it was “hilarious” that Laundrie was offering $200 for the 10-mile ride and didn’t appear to be very dirty, though he claimed he’d been camping for days.

Another witness stated that she picked up Laundrie at 6:20 or 6:30 p.m. on August 29 from the Jackson Lake Dam area and dropped her off at the entrance to the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping area. Laundrie offered petrol money for the twenty-minute drive but would not be taken further than the campsite entrance, which was several miles from the van. According to the witness, Laundrie acted “nervous” as he exited the vehicle before it approached the campsite.[36][37]

On August 27, a text message was sent from Petito’s phone to her mother, which read, “Can you help Stan, I just keep getting his voicemails and missed calls.” The message raised concerns with Petito’s mother, who said Stan was Petito’s grandfather and she never addressed him by his first name. The last message, sent on August 30, read, “No service in Yosemite.” Her mother expressed uncertainty as to who sent the messages.[39]

On September 1, 2021, Laundrie returned alone to his childhood home in North Port, Florida, in the Ford Transit Connect.[13] On September 6-7, 2021, Laundrie and his parents camped at Fort De Soto Park in Pinellas County.[4]

detection

Petito and Laundrie have been reported missing

After Petito’s mother hadn’t heard from her daughter since the end of August, she filed a missing person’s report on September 11.[40] Four days later, Laundrie was made a person of interest. Laundrie’s parents hired a lawyer and, on his advice, remained silent, refusing to discuss the case with anyone.[16]

Police monitored the laundry house and saw him leave on September 13. On September 15, they saw his car coming back; Police believed the person who got out of the car and entered the house was Laundrie.[41] The following day, North Port Police Commissioner Todd Garrison told reporters, “All I’m going to say is that we know where Brian Laundrie is.”[42] On September 17, Laundrie was reported missing by his parents reported who claimed not to have seen him since September 13.[43] It was then that police realized they had mistook Laundrie’s mother for Laundrie herself on 15 September.

After obtaining search warrants, police seized the Laundrie family’s Ford Transit Connect, an external hard drive, and Ford Mustang at the North Port residence.[45]

Discovery of Petito’s remains

On September 19, human remains matching Petito’s description were found at the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping site in Wyoming,[46] not far from where the Ford Transit Connect was previously observed.[16] [47] Her identity was confirmed, and an autopsy revealed the manner of death to be homicide by “blunt injuries to the head and neck with manual strangulation,”[48] which occurred three to four weeks before the body was found.[16]

Search for laundry and find remains

On September 23, the United States District Court for the District of Wyoming issued an arrest warrant for Laundrie for unauthorized use of Petito’s debit card to obtain $1,000 or more between August 30 and September 1. The FBI stole material matching Laundrie’s DNA from his home.[52]

In an October 5 interview with ABC News, Laundrie’s sister encouraged him to turn himself in to authorities.[53] Two days later, Laundrie’s father joined investigators to search for Laundrie at the T. Mabry Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County, Florida, focusing on areas he formerly visited on the reserve and adjacent Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park.

On October 20, Laundrie’s skeletal remains, confirmed by forensic dentistry, and some of his belongings were found at Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in an area that was recently flooded due to flooding.[55] His cause of death could not be determined by an autopsy, and his remains were turned over to an anthropologist for further examination.[56] On November 23, it was announced that the anthropologist had concluded that Laundrie died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and that the manner of death was suicide.[2]

Concession of laundry

On January 21, 2022, the FBI announced that after examining Laundrie’s notebook, they found that he had admitted to killing Petito and then deceived people via text message that she was alive. He was then officially held responsible for Petito’s death by the authorities.[3] The FBI Denver Division concluded the investigation by stating that “The investigation did not identify any individuals other than Brian Laundrie who were directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito. The FBI’s primary focus throughout the investigation was to get justice done for Gabby and her family.”[57] The text of the note was later released by the Laundrie family’s attorney. The note includes a report saying he had Killed Petito after she fell and injured herself by saying, “I ended her life. [58] The note ends with his suicide plans, stating: “I don’t end my life for fear of punishment, I do because I can’t bear to live another day without her.”[59]

However, experts claim that Laundrie’s report does not match the investigators’ findings. Michael Alcazar of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice believed Laundrie was “someone who doesn’t want to admit what he’s done. He’s trying to find some justification for his actions.”[58]

Public interest

Media outside the Laundrie family home in North Port, Florida on September 20, 2021

The case attracted more public interest and coverage on the news and social media than other missing persons and murder cases.[60][61][62] This heightened interest has been attributed to several factors, including: Laundrie and his parents’ refusal to comment on Petito’s whereabouts;[16] the amount of content on social media documenting their lifestyle;[63] video footage of the traffic stop in Utah; the audio recording of the 9-1-1 call;[60][63][64] the video contributions of witnesses who provided much publicly available evidence; the idea that the couple was young and attractive[63] and on a romantic getaway gone awry;[61] the incidents of domestic violence in their relationship; an increase in interest in cross-country travel in caravans due to the COVID-19 pandemic;[63] and the general increase in interest in true crime-related entertainment over the past decade.[61] There has been speculation that the case is connected to the murders of Kylen Schulte and Crystal Turner, which took place in Moab around the same time Laundrie and Petito were there.[65]

Public involvement in the case included witnesses and others posting their observations and theories on social media,[61] protests outside the Laundry House demanding answers,[66] a candlelight vigil for Petito in her hometown[66 ] and donations to the Gabby Petito foundation set up by her parents to assist in the search for more missing persons.[67] Increased interest in finding Laundrie and Petito led to the discovery of five other missing persons’ bodies.[68] While some social media posts on the case were helpful in the investigation, many of them have been characterized as insensitive, unhelpful, monetized, motivated by increased exposure, or outright misinformation.[61][60][62][63]

The high volume of media coverage in the case has been cited by some commentators as an example of missing white woman syndrome, or the overemphasis on news about people because of their race, gender, age or appearance. [69][70] Comparing Petito’s case to others, several outlets pointed to the relative lack of media attention towards the approximately 710 Native Americans who were reported missing in Wyoming between 2011 and 2020.[60][71][72] [70]

legal action

Gabbie Petito’s parents are suing Brian Laundrie’s parents and a Florida judge has allowed the lawsuit to proceed.[73]
