Minelab Metal Detectors

organic

Originally from England, Gary started out mudlarking on riverbanks before finding more and more coins that led him to metal detection. He now resides in South Florida where he fell in love with hunting for Spanish treasure and spends most of the year looking for valuable finds. His “out of the box” approach to metal detection has led Gary to explore different search techniques and different locations, always aided by his site reading and metal detection technique to find treasure.

Gary is fortunate to make a living from something he loves by writing books on beach and water hunting and giving private treasure hunting lessons. His Spanish treasure troves even caught the attention of Hollywood producers, leading to several television show appearances before he was eventually cast as a resident metal detection expert on The Curse of Oak Island, the top rated treasure hunt show in the US.

Gary uses a range of Minelab detectors. His first Minelab metal detector was the EXCALIBUR, a metal detector he still uses today. Gary explains, “As any long-time Minelab user will tell you, the only way to beat a Minelab is to use a different Minelab, so I always have different specialty tools in the old tool shed.” When searching for Spanish treasures on the beach, Gary prefers the impressive depth-seeking performance of the GPX 5000 and the large Commander searchcoils. When he travels to search for metal, he uses the EQUINOX 800 and for most tourist beach jewelry hunts he can’t get past his CTX 3030.

Gary’s most memorable find is the magnificent 300 year old emerald treasure ring valued at a cool $500,000, a true find of a lifetime! During the thrill of the hunt and that great moment when you salvage something from your shovel that has been lost for hundreds of years, Gary has become addicted to discovery.

Gary has detailed his unique beach and water hunting methods and search techniques in his series of books for all those who search for water to learn from his many years of experience. He also has his own blog and YouTube channel, and is also featured in the History Channel series The Curse of Oak Island.

Gary Drayton of The Curse of Oak Island on How This Season May Potentially Rewrite North American History HISTORY

Fans of The Curse of Oak Island are always excited to see what exciting developments await them. What we do know is that treasure hunter brothers Rick and Marty Lagina and their team will be exploring new areas of the island – on the south coast of Nova Scotia, Canada – using new technology and theories. We also know that swamp might play a bigger role this season.

This season, Gary Drayton (nicknamed “Metal Detecting Ninja”) will be hard at work alongside the rest of the team and is excited to see what the show reveals. “I realize how many fans of the show are suffering from COVID, financially and [otherwise],” he says. “So if I can put a smile on the faces of these people — these Oak Island believers — it makes me happy. No matter how much swamp mud I’m covered in or how many mosquito bites I get.”

Drayton spoke to HISTORY.com about the dig community, whether he’s found anything interesting recently and how what was found in the swamp could “potentially rewrite North American history.”

The Oak Island history book has easily doubled, if not quadrupled, since the team got there. How does it feel to connect with this history on the island and add something to its history?

That’s why I’ve always wanted to go to Oak Island. It’s so special to me because it’s the longest-running treasure hunt in North America. I just can’t believe I get so lucky every time I drive down that causeway [to the island]. I take this enthusiasm with me every day.

The Lagina brothers found out about the treasure hunt on Oak Island in Reader’s Digest. How did you first discover it?

When I was a boy, I read a book about treasures. I was supposed to work on the farm and spend my life on a farm, but all I did was dream of far exotic islands and pirate treasures. When I first read about Oak Island, I clearly remembered reading about pirate treasure. Sometimes I have to pinch myself. I read about it as a boy in England and now I’m here on Oak Island.

are you there right now

no I ran home to do this interview. I’m actually covered in swamp mud. The team on Oak Island looks like a tight-knit group.

Tell us a little about the community of the dig.

The excavation community is a little different for me because metal detection isn’t really a team activity. This is the first time I’ve been on a treasure hunt with other people. [It] was a new concept and new to get used to, and I love it.

The people at the dig all bring something special to the table. You have the opportunity to learn something and expand your area of expertise. Everyone is a normal guy. There is no ego and everyone has the same goal. It’s like working with your best friends. It’s awesome.

Her joy in treasure hunting is contagious. Fans eagerly await the one-of-a-kind remarkable finds you dub the “Bobby Dazzlers” and artifacts so important they earn a VIP spot in your top bag. What do you love most about treasure hunting on Oak Island?

Recovering artifacts, knowing that you’re the first person to touch Bobby Dazzlers or a top bag find in 100 or 150 years… I’m thinking of the person who lost that coin or that button or that buckle, or especially that one Bobby Dazzler, like a brooch. They must have been heartbroken when they lost this because it must have been worth a lot of money at the time.

Even if it’s just an unforged square nail. I’m also like, ‘Wow, that’s beautiful.’ Some craftsman made this unforged nail by hand two, three, 400 years ago and it was probably laborious. It was… hard work and I can see the craftsmanship. They could never imagine the future and I was standing there with this high tech metal detector and rejoicing in what was probably everyday [work] for them at the time. This connection to the past is why I’m so excited.

Let’s talk about your “top bag” finds, like this vintage brooch with the red gem and the Templar Cross. Can you tell us about your latest top bag finds on the island?

I can’t kiss and say, but let’s put it this way: I have a zipper on my top pocket and I’m at risk of wearing that zipper. This has been a fantastic year for Bobby Dazzlers and some top bag finds for sure.

It seems that tunnel excavation C1 is back in the spotlight this season. A lot of attention has been paid to C1 over the years: cameras picked up the gleaming gold object, then there was a hammer grab bringing up wood, then divers were sent down to explore the cave at the bottom, but came back up empty-handed. I heard the team is digging there again. What are you looking for?

It’s that shiny golden thing. And we also got some more information and test results that made us revisit C1, but it’s that shiny gold thing that’s actually in the game. What last season taught us is that it’s actually the chimney, but it’s the way artifacts go underground there. They are caves and [underground] chambers. We think there’s treasure moving at the bottom of the money pit, and C1 and that shiny gold thing, it’s somewhere.

What’s going on in the swamp?

I can’t say too much… Where one door closes, another opens. What we found in the swamp this year will blow everyone’s minds and potentially rewrite North American history. We’re all amazed. What we found was hidden from view. What better place to hide something fabulous than a swamp.

Let me just put it this way: Marty is also happy to be in the swamp this year.

Anything else you can share about the new season?

It will go down in history as one of the most productive seasons we’ve had at Oak Island. We discovered more this year than we could ever have dreamed of. It’s been a fantastic year. We made discovery after discovery after discovery.

Certain legends surround Oak Island. You hear about legendary items associated with [the island] and we got our hands on some of those legendary Oak Island items this year. That’s pretty special. fans will love it. [It] is fucking awesome.
