Purdue center Zach Edey keeps giving me his middle finger, and that’s not what you’re thinking, but how often in your life do you write a sentence like that? So much about Edey lends itself to first-time occurrences, starting with his reported size of 7-4, a number that makes him the tallest player in Big Ten history, even if it technically undercuts his size. Because he’s bigger. Stay tuned. Lots of interesting facts when it comes to Zach Edey.
What intrigues me most is the middle finger he keeps showing me on our Zoom call, letting me know exactly what he thinks of the way I’m conducting this interview.
We’re sorry. He doesn’t do that at all. Forgive me if I have trouble separating fact from fiction, but Zach Edey can have that effect on you. It makes you think about the difference between what’s real and what’s impossible, and whether we need to rethink all of that.
The Badgers had few answers for Purdue’s 7-foot-4 freshman center Zach Edey, who finished Tuesday with a career-high 21 points.
What seems impossible for Edey is how good he is, how far he’s come in the few years since he started playing basketball. You’ve by now heard the story of how Edey grew up in Canada and played hockey, the world’s greatest teenage defender, until he turned 6-10 at the age of 16 and coaches suggested he consider basketball. All of that is true, but it doesn’t explain how Edey got so good at basketball so quickly.
For that you need to get him to talk about baseball.
Zach Edey has grown
“My first instinct was to use those two fingers,” Edey tells me, holding up the last four fingers of his right hand – all but the thumb – and folding his index and pinky fingers down. The ring and middle fingers remain. He wants to show me that.
“I started playing basketball and those were the two fingers I shot the most with,” he says, shaking his head for doing everything wrong.
He played both baseball and hockey. Mainly a pitcher who learned to roll the baseball off his first two fingers – the pointer and middle – so he could play with the ball at the end of his hand and feel like pitchers.
So there he is, a junior in high school, the tallest player on the court, and he can’t shoot at all, and finally a coach is up a ladder to take a closer look and… sorry, I’m still doing it once. The ladder part didn’t happen. This is fiction, but the rest is fact. His high school coach in Toronto noticed that the basketball rolled off Edey’s middle two fingers, and he told Edey to think of the basketball as baseball and let it roll off his first two fingers instead. Anyway, in Edey’s huge hands, a basketball almost looks like a baseball. The tip stuck.
“That translated very quickly,” he says, now showing me his first two fingers. “As soon as I started changing it, my shot was straighter and with better rotation.”
Six months after taking up the sport, Edey made the Canada U17 national team. He soon went to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida where he was unable to get on the court. True story, Zach Edey had more minutes as a freshman at Purdue — averaging 8.7 points and 4.4 rebounds and shooting 59.7% from the floor in 14.7 minutes per game — than he got as a high school senior. IMG was packed with Division I players, including 7-foot Duke recruit Mark Williams, and Edey was just this raw kid from Canada still growing into his physique, a process made difficult by the fact that he was still growing.
Edey was 7-2 when he came to IMG Academy and 7-3 when he left. In shoes he measured 7-4½, and while standard practice at Purdue, like most schools, is to measure players in shoes and round up, the Boilermakers rounded up to Edey. They listed him at 7-4 last season, but he was 7-4½ — meaning he was more like 7-5 — and he wasn’t done growing anyway.
At the end of the season, Purdue classmate Jaden Ivey consistently referred to Edey as “7-5” in interviews.
Edey doesn’t seem to know his actual size.
“My height goes through weird flares,” he says. “I’ve been growing lately. With shoes, I might be closer to 7-6 by the start of (next) season. I have no idea.”
None of that would matter if he couldn’t play. But he can, which means Zach Edey’s blanket is his actual size. We have no idea.
I hadn’t even thought about the NBA draft
He’s quirky, this kid. Oh, he comes across as calm and super serious, and that’s certainly at the core of who Zach Edey is. But he is also a child who likes to smile and is comfortable with his unique dimensions. He just turned 19, still a teenager, and a few months ago he saw a story on the internet about the world’s tallest teenager, confirmed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
And this boy was no taller than Edey!
So Edey goes to the folks at Purdue’s sports information department to see what can be done to fix this problem. He laughs at it, and that’s all, but it’s a look at the kid behind the basketball player.
But mostly he is serious. For starters, he doesn’t mess around outside of the 3-point arc. That’s where the game has gone — the Dallas Mavericks’ Kristaps Porzingis has scored at least 80 3-pointers in each of his first five NBA seasons, and he’s 7-3 — but Edey is still trying to get the Master the basics of basketball.
“I think there’s always going to be room for a good solid big man in the middle — Rudy Gobert, people like that,” he says. “You don’t really have to have an outside jump shot to still be dominant, still get paid, still be appreciated by teams. A jump shot would be super nice and valuable, but I’m in no rush to get there just yet. I know I probably can.”
With his native Canada in a coronavirus lockdown, Edey is working on his game at Purdue. He lines up hundreds of jumpers around the hoop four times a week, lifting weights, doing footwork exercises. People who would know say he’s already better than he was a few months ago, no surprise given how much Edey has improved over the season.
You know how Edey shot those rainbows off the foul line last season? That’s not how he shot her when he arrived in Purdue a few months earlier. He threw the ball more on a line until someone suggested more arc. Edey reinvented his foul shot on the fly, then shot 71.4% from the line as a freshman. In his last two regular season games against Wisconsin and IU, he averaged 20.5 points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes per game and shot 16 to 21 from the floor (76.2%).
Edey finished his freshman year as one of only three collegiate players to average eight points and four rebounds, blocked 30 shots and shot at least 57.5% from the floor. The others included an All-American (Michigan’s Hunter Dickinson) and the proposed No. 2 in the 2021 NBA draft (Southern California’s Evan Mobley).
Both honors — All-American, NBA draft pick — are within reach for Edey one day, but even though he’s improving so quickly, he’s trying to take it slow. When it comes to individual goals, the most he says to me is: “Everyone wants to have this personal success. A Big Ten selection would be an honor. I’ll just work hard every day to be a better me.”
He would not enter the 2021 NBA draft because of the vanity or even the feedback.
“It would be cool to find out what they want to develop in my game,” Edey says of NBA scouts, “but I think it’s pretty obvious at this point. I need to work on my jump shot, ball screen save and ball handling. I don’t have to do all these (NBA draft) steps for them to tell me the same things that the coaches are telling me here. I feel like I declared myself for the draft, it would be a bit small compared to what the coaches are telling me here. It can wait.”
