GOP race for Arizona governor becomes 2024 proxy war as Ducey defies Trump
In a final major test of Donald Trump’s Republican power this year, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey on Thursday approved a potential successor running against a candidate backed by the former president.
Ducey’s disregard for Trump in supporting Karrin Taylor Robson over Kari Lake marks the third swing-state governor’s race – following the Georgia and Pennsylvania primaries – in which figures from the Republican establishment have taken a stand against Trump and his preferred candidates.
The fight in Arizona, like the other two swing states, is as much about renegotiating the 2020 election that Trump lost as it is about wielding his influence in the GOP while he receives another bid from the White House weighs.
“The Arizona governor’s primary is the purest race in the country to show MAGA against the Republican establishment,” said Steve Bannon, who was a top Trump White House adviser. “This is a proxy war in 2024.”
Ducey gave his approval a week after one of the race’s other established figures, former MP Matt Salmon, dropped out of the primary and threw his support behind Taylor Robson over fears that Lake would win on Aug. 2 and then be ranked as the Republican base would prove unelectable in November. Senate President Karen Fann and national figures like former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Georgia House Speaker Newt Gingrich also support Taylor Robson, a real estate developer who has caught up with Lake in the polls.
Former Vice President Mike Pence could be next to offer his support, according to an aide who was not authorized to make their private talks public. Pence is a friend of Ducey, and both men have been targeted by Trump and his supporters for failing to overturn the 2020 election due to the untruth of a widespread, rampant scam.
A Pence endorsement by Taylor Robson would reveal the president’s primary stakes in the gubernatorial race and shine a spotlight on the personal drama between Trump and his estranged former running mate, who is considering a bid of his own for the White House. A Pence endorsement would also bring a dose of payback: Lake slammed Pence on Newsmax last month for his visit to the US-Mexico border and his refusal to help bring down the 2020 election.
“I don’t think he snowballs in Phoenix to win,” Lake said of Pence’s potential presidential nomination. “There are a lot of people [who] are disappointed in Mike Pence for his actions on January 6th.”

Lake, a former TV news anchor, looked like a sure favorite in the primary for months. She had Trump’s backing and built a lead in the polls while repeating the baseless claim that the 2020 election was stolen. She also called for the prosecution of suspected conspirators and said lawmakers should go so far as to smooth out the election.
But the state of the race has changed dramatically in recent weeks as Taylor Robson splurged millions of dollars on publicity and began consolidating support for a GOP facility in hopes of making his own mark on the race.
The race was already one of the most important primaries this year, with the winner likely to face Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs in a state that played a crucial role in deciding the 2020 election and where the Governor will play a role in certifying results in 2024.
An aide to Taylor Robson, who spoke on condition of anonymity to candidly discuss the dynamics of the race, said Ducey’s support will certainly boost the campaign.
“It’s obviously a terrific signal not only to voters in the state, but also to Republican influencers across the country,” the adviser said. “And so I think more endorsements will follow.”
Taylor Robson supporters are hoping Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — the nation’s second-most popular Republican behind Trump and a potential presidential nominee for 2024 — will also get involved.
“I think any campaign would want Gov. DeSantis’ endorsement,” Taylor Robson’s adviser said. “So that’s out of the question. We would of course welcome it.”
But those familiar with DeSantis’ thinking say he’s unlikely to enter the Arizona race, particularly because he doesn’t want to fuel public speculation about his White House aspirations.
However, early last year, DeSantis quietly joined the race when he led Salmon — a friend of the governor’s from his days in Congress when they helped start the House Freedom Caucus — to a meeting with Trump at his club in Mar-a-Lago in Florida hoping to get confirmation, two sources with direct knowledge of the meeting said.
The sources said Salmon felt the Trump endorsement would happen, but that Trump’s stance changed when Salmon refused to say the 2020 election was stolen. Lake had no such reservations, the sources said.
Salmon’s departure was a blessing for Taylor Robson. Recent polls have shown a close race between her and Lake. A poll by OH Predictive Insights conducted after Salmon’s departure found Lake Taylor leads Robson by 40 to 35 percent, but many respondents are still undecided. A Moore Information Group poll commissioned by Salmon shortly before his departure found that statistically, Taylor Robson was tied with Lake in a hypothetical neck-and-neck race.
Ducey endorsed Taylor Robson after growing resentful of what he perceived as disingenuous political cheap shots from Lake, who was a registered Democrat during the Obama era. He began planning to back Taylor Robson after Salmon left the race – and only if she showed momentum, said those who discussed the plans with the governor.
Ducey timed the confirmation to coincide with the start of early voting, when the most reliable voters are known to cast their ballots by mail.
Ross Trumble, a spokesman for the Lake campaign, said Ducey’s support was “proof that Karrin Taylor’s claim to be a conservative outsider is a lie”.
“Taylor Robson represents a continuation of policies that have enriched insiders at the expense of ordinary Arizonans for decades,” Trumble said. “Kari Lake is the true underdog in this race who will be a visionary leader for Arizona.”
Ducey is the chairman of the Republican Governors Association and someone who has clashed with Trump, and his involvement in the race prompted immediate speculation that the organization he chairs could spend millions promoting Taylor Robson in the last month of the primary, but a spokesman for the club issued a blanket refusal. Two of the sources familiar with Ducey’s thinking said he might ask Governors’ Association donors to fund a separate policy committee on Taylor Robson’s behalf, but they said no decision had been made.
Trump’s political operation, however, has heard the speculation and could raise money in return to boost Lake, said an adviser who was not authorized to publicly discuss the strategy.
Trump “is closely watching Arizona and is committed to ensuring that its supported candidate wins,” the adviser said. Trump urged Arizonans on Wednesday to cast early votes for Lake, writing, “The people of Arizona have an opportunity to get a really great governor, unlike the one you have right now.”
However, Taylor Robson was a key supporter of Trump. Her campaign has noted that she raised more than $1 million for Trump’s campaigns while her husband was a six-figure donor.
Lake seeks to bring the 2020 election into focus by contrasting herself with Taylor Robson, who has said President Joe Biden’s victory was unfair but has not gone so far as to say the election was stolen.
At a debate last week, Lake asked the three other candidates on stage to raise their hands if they thought the election was corrupt and stolen. Only Taylor Robson kept her hand down.

The convergence of the establishment around Taylor Robson contrasts with another hotly contested gubernatorial race. In Pennsylvania, Republicans have waited too long to support an alternative to Doug Mastriano, a far-right state senator who stood outside the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 and rode across a splintered field to a major victory in May.
However, Mastriano now faces a revolt from some established Republicans. In Georgia, another swing state Biden won in 2020, Trump underperformed in the 2022 primary when his top picks to unseat the Republican governor, attorney general and secretary of state were all defeated.
“Of course there are Pennsylvania nods: Lake and Mastriano are cut from the same fabric,” said Chris Baker, who headed a political committee that promoted Salmon before dropping out of the race.
Like Mastriano, Lake has a dedicated hardcore fan base. Her opponents’ negative paid media campaigns, while relatively meager, have not yet dented her standing as a front-runner.
“If anything, Lake is a more competent version of a Trump candidate than Mastriano,” Baker said. “She’s good on TV. She is very articulate. She can deliver a message. She is effective Mastriano with great communication skills.”
Bannon, meanwhile, suggested that if Lake wins the primary and defeats Hobbs in the fall, she “will definitely have a hard look in 2024” at becoming Trump’s running mate should he run.
