In 1994, Lipinski won a silver medal in the women’s beginner division at the 1994 US Figure Skating Championships. At 12, she became the youngest athlete to win the U.S. Olympic Festival 1994[7] and took first place in their first international competition, the Blue Swords in Chemnitz, Germany. According to Cosmopolitan Magazine, the media began to take notice of Lipinski after Blue Swords in November 1994.[2] As a junior skater, she placed fourth at the 1995 World Junior Figure Skating Championships and placed second at the 1995 US Figure Skating Championships with six triples in her long program. Lipinski and Callaghan spent the next year “making her seem more mature”. In late 1996, she added the triple-loop-triple-loop combination, which became her signature jump and added technical difficulty to her programs. She was the first woman to complete the combination in competition.[2][11] Lipinski competed in the ISU Champions Series (later renamed the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating) in the 1996–1997 season. She placed second at the Skate Canada, third at the Trophée Lalique, and second at the 1996 Nations Cup. She won the gold medal at the Champion Series Finals, defeating Michelle Kwan by having more successful jumps in her short and free programs.
In February 1997, at age 14, Lipinski became the youngest skater to win a U.S. Nationals title won. She broke the record set by Sonya Klopfer, who left the U.S. in 1951 at the age of 15. nationals won. Kwan fell twice and landed only four of seven of her planned threes during her long program, leaving the door open for Lipinski’s victory. Reporter Jere Longman of The New York Times called Lipinski’s freestyle “a light, airy performance” and said it was “calm and nearly flawless”. Longman reported that Lipinski opened with a double axel and included a triple flip and her “signature three-loop, three-loop combination”. She received 5.8 and 5.9 on her technical grades and 5.7 and 5.8 on her presentation grades. The final results after the freestyle were close; Longman stated that the judges could not declare a clear winner of the freestyle. Lipinski, Kwan (who finished fourth after the short program), and Russian skater Irina Slutskaya all received first-place votes. In what Swift called “a split decision,” Kwan’s freestyle came in first place because she had more votes in first and second place, and Lipinski came in first place overall because she had more votes in second place in the Free received skate as Slutskaya. Longman reported that if two other judges had put Slutskaya ahead of Lipinski after the free skate, Kwan would have won the contest but instead ended up in second place. Between seasons, Lipinski grew two inches and lived to be 15 years old.[18] She entered the 1997–1998 season by continuing to add more “sophistication” to her routines, honing her artistry and taking daily dance classes from Russian ballet teacher Marina Sheffer. She chose film music for her short program as well as for her freestyle, both of which were choreographed by Sandra Bezic.[21][20] According to writer Ellyn Kestnbaum, the American press “played the rivalry between Kwan and Lipinski for what it was worth” [21].
At Skate America, Kwan defeated Lipinski for the first time in three competitions to win the gold medal. Lipinski placed second to Kwan in both her short program and her free skate, and placed second overall. Although Lipinski performed more difficult jumps than Kwan during her short program, she received “consistently lower” required element scores. While free-skating in “an otherwise strong and technically difficult performance” [22], she fell on a triple Lutz combination jump. According to Kestnbaum, Callaghan “expressed confusion as to why the judges had so cast down the reigning world champion, who by virtue of that position would otherwise have been expected to be given an advantage when in doubt”. Lipinski placed second at Trophée Lalique behind French skater Laetitia Hubert, who had not won a major competition since the 1992 World Junior Championships and had placed 11th at her previous competition.
Lipinski was entered into the Champion Series finals as the fourth-ranked female figure skater in the world. She won and ran her first clean program of the season. Kwan, although eligible, withdrew from the finals due to injuries. Mike Penner, a writer for the L.A. Lipinski finished second at the 1998 US Figure Skating Championships; Kwan took first place. She had “a devastating fall” after attempting a triple flip during her short program, which Lipinski described as “the lowest point” of her career. Lipinski recovered enough from her short program that she climbed from fourth to second overall. He reported that USA Today criticized her decision, noting that she took “the easy way out” and likening it to “joining the circus.”[39] Lori Shontz of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believed Lipinski was treated unfairly by the figure skating establishment after she decided to leave competitive skating.
The Associated Press reported that Lipinski’s net worth was “possibly as high as $12 million” in 1998 due to many endorsements and book deals. She signed an “exclusive deal”[41] with CBS to do some acting and appear in ice skating shows and unsanctioned competitions. She skated in over 300 live shows, including professional team competitions like Ice Wars on CBS. Also on CBS, Lipinski produced and starred in a two-hour special titled “Tara Lipinski: From This Moment On.” She won every competition she entered during her professional career. After the Olympics, Lipinski toured with Champions on Ice, visiting 90 US cities. In August 1998, Lipinski ended her association with Champions on Ice, with whom she had performed since 1995, and joined the Stars on Ice cast to expand artistically and participate in the company’s group numbers, which were “the highlight” of the tour .[41] The Associated Press reported that Lipinski suffered from sore hips and an injured hip during rehearsals.[41]

Skating technique [ edit ]
Lipinski’s skating influences were Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton and Christopher Bowman. Her skating style has often been compared to that of her “rival” Michelle Kwan; Jere Longman of The New York Times called Lipinski “a Springer’s enduring energizer bunny,” but called Kwan “the more refined, complete artist.”[19] Frank Carroll, who coached Kwan, called Lipinski’s style “wonderful” and said that it “turns easily, jumps easily.”[19] Writer Ellyn Kestnbaum stated that, in comparison to Kwan’s “more carefully choreographed expressions of joy”[32], Lipinski projected “unconscious and spontaneous joy in her own movement that exuded greater confidence and mastery of space”.
Kestnbaum discussed Lipinski’s skating technique in her book Culture on Ice: Figure Skating and Cultural Meaning to illustrate the influence of women and girls on figure skating. Lipinski and Weir were hired by NBC’s Access Hollywood in 2014 to analyze fashion during the Oscars red carpet.[58] She has served as the “fashion, lifestyle and social media correspondent”[59] for NBC Sports, including with Weir the Beverly Hills Dog Show in 2017,[60] the National Dog Show every year since 2015,[59] the Kentucky Derby in 2014–2017 and 2018 (as “Fashion and Lifestyle Experts” in 2016)[61] and pre-game coverage for the Super Bowl in 2015 and 2017.[59][62] They were appointed “cultural correspondents”[63] for the 2016 Summer Olympics.[61]
According to the Houston Chronicle, Lipinski approached broadcasting “with passion, vigour, and a strenuous work ethic similar to what brought her to the ice”. She spent hundreds of hours researching skaters.[47] Her broadcast influences were Peggy Fleming, Dick Button and Scott Hamilton; She listened to tapes of Hamilton’s earlier broadcasts to learn how to commentate. She called her broadcasting career her “second dream.”[50] In 2018, she told Entertainment Tonight, “I’m very grateful that Johnny and I found this place in our world and it gives us opportunities outside of skating.”[56] In 2018, The Washington Post reported that the reaction of the Viewers on Lipinski and Weir were mixed; some considered them “Olympic darlings – a one-stop shop for knowledge, sass and brass”, while others found them “mean, obnoxious and distracting”. Scott Hamilton, who was replaced at NBC by Lipinski, Weir and Gannon, called her a “phenomenon” and “such a breath of fresh air.”[55] GQ called her commentary style “a Gladwellian ability to demystify figure skating for the uninitiated and an extreme outspokenness that got them some heat”. Lipinski and Weir’s commentary style was candid and colourful; They used banter and avoided “fluffy, polished performances”.[2] They sought to present figure skating in an accessible manner to their viewers, keeping the sport’s more technical aspects to a minimum but emphasizing its “chatty nuances”. Speaking of her friendship with Weir, Lipinski explained that although their skating careers hadn’t happened at the same time and therefore they didn’t know each other well when they started collaborating at the Sochi Olympics, they met “on the air and off the air.” She also said: “It’s like a long lost soul mate that I met late in life.
