Kody Scott was such a notorious neighborhood mobster that schoolchildren would tremble at the thought of walking past his south Los Angeles home, afraid he would start a fight or steal their bikes and lunch money.
“It’s like butterflies,” said Skipp Townsend, a former gang member now a community activist who works with 2nd Call, a community-based organization that helps high-risk individuals. “It’s like man my stomach is getting upset because we have no idea what Kody is going to do.”
But that day, as Townsend and a schoolmate stopped by 69th Street near Florence and Normandy Avenues, they happened to catch Scott on a good day.
Townsend’s schoolmate told Scott he had a stomach ache and was just trying to get home. Scott patted him on the back. “All right, see you tomorrow,” he said, then sent her on her way unharmed.

The strange life of “monster” Kody Scott would soon become a cautionary tale of redemption and the unrelenting tug-of-war of gang life.
Scott was a well-known gangbanger in the 1970s and notably became a motivational speaker and best-selling author of a 1993 memoir that took a sobering look at gang life in L.A. The book, which traced his journey from violence to transcendence, came out at a time when much of America outside of L.A. and New York City was still unaware of gang culture.
Though Scott escaped death multiple times as a member of the Eight Tray Gangster Crips and then became an author advising others to avoid gang life, the 57-year-old was found dead on June 7 at a homeless camp near the San Luis River Trail in Oceanside, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Scott’s girlfriend discovered his “badly decomposed” body in a tent, said Tom Bussey, a public information officer with the Oceanside Police Department. It appears Scott died of natural causes and not from a foul play, although the cause of death has yet to be determined, Bussey said.

Scott, who changed his name to Sanyika Shakur to mark his rebirth and the end of his gang career, had a complex life. For every step forward, he seemed to take at least one step back.
Despite his promising career in Hollywood — his memoir was mooted by Training Day director Antoine Fuqua as a possible movie that never materialized — Scott was eventually put on L.A.’s most wanted list for allegedly stealing a car, a possible third strike that would mean a long prison sentence and living in a homeless camp on Oceanside. But within the last year he’s been working on another book and has been in talks with a streaming service about adapting his story and launching a podcast, said Leo “Pretty Boy” Smith, a former gang rival who plans to co-host the podcast.
Throwing the book at “Monster” Kody Scott, whose gang autobiography sparked a literary career, makes it onto LAPD’s “Most Wanted” list. Friends say the refugee’s admission was unjustified.

Model-turned-journalist Léon Bing was the first author Scott brought to the attention of the outside of L.A. with her 1991 book about gang life, Do or Die. Scott is photographed on the book cover shirtless with dark sunglasses and a MAC-10.
Bing recalls being an avid reader who she thought was intelligent, and someone who could easily hold her own when they were playfully exchanging insults. One day, as Scott and Bing rode through the hood in the back seat of a car, she remembers asking him to show her his “crazy dog” face.
“He took his hat and [turned] it to the side like a kid will do trying to look tough… and he squinted his eyes and stuck the tip of his tongue out of his mouth and said, ‘Scary, huh? ” Bing recalled.
“People really respected him in the Hood and the people who were scared of him were scared for the wrong reasons I think,” she added. “He didn’t want to show off his strength. He was just who he was and he wasn’t a show-off.”
At Scott’s request during his incarceration, Bing helped him coordinate a toy ride at a local children’s hospital with then-15-year-old Bernard Cooper, a young member of the Eight Tray Gangster Crips.
“I was excited to get a letter from Monster Kody,” said Cooper, who is now 49 and runs a recovery program for ex-gang members and felons. “Out of all the little kids out here, he picked me.”
Cooper, who joined the gang at age 13, said Scott took him and other recruits to the shooting range, where he shared street games with them.
“People just assume he’s closed off because of the stories they hear about him or whatever, but I never got just love from him,” he said. “Even when he ran away with my mother’s .25 automatic and my mother chased me about it. … he said he needed it, so I let him get it, even though he never returned it.”
Despite his reputation, people closest to him said they rarely – if ever – saw the “monster” side of him.
“Of course I’ve heard about the violence and read about it in the book, but I’ve never met ‘Monster Kody,'” said Sanyika Shakur II, 31, Scott’s youngest son. “I’ve always seen pops.”
He added, “[He was] like the older best friend. That was the guy coming in, he’s ready to play all day. My mom was probably at home handling all the business [and] getting on our butts, he came in, he wanted to play, crack jokes, tickle, fight, things like that.

Before Scott died, he also made amends with Smith. The two had grown up in the same neighborhood and knew each other’s families, but when Smith joined a rival gang, Rollin Sixties, they became enemies. In 1981, Smith was arrested for allegedly shooting Scott. Smith was found not guilty and a decade later, while he and Scott were in prison, Smith wrote him a letter to congratulate him on his book. From then on, they began sending letters back and forth.
Earlier last year, the two talked about starting a podcast together that would detail their upbringing, their falling outs and eventually their reconnection, but Smith has struggled to get in touch with Scott, who was “always on the go.”
“A lot of young people could have seen, wow, these two big name rivals are coming together. So when they get together, everyone else can turn around and say, ‘Well, if they can do it, we can do it.’” Smith said.
Scott’s son was pragmatic about his father’s life arc.
“That’s the underdog story. It might not have had a glorious ending, you know, but s- life isn’t always a fairy tale,” he said. “As real as it is, this guy was a compassionate guy. This guy was a loyal guy [and] a damn good driver, just charismatic and a person to be with.”
